Living
In San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina ~ Real
Estate And Life In Bariloche ~ by Douglas Harris - I guess the memory-legend-true
myth of our trip to Bariloche will always be “Let’s sell everything and
live here” this after about an hour looking out over Lake Nahuel Huapi.
Snowy peaks surround this lake of indescribable blue. The water so pure
you could drink it straight with no harm. The air is so clean, it recalls
a kind of genetic memory of a time when pristine actually described something
in your life. We, in the USA, live in a world of varying shades of gray.
Living
In Venezuela ~ Merida
And Margarita Island ~ by Christopher Hyland - For those who are recently
off the boat, so to speak, the best place to start in Venezuela is Merida.
Merida is a small city, relatively safe and has a lot for the newcomer
to see and do. It is also one of the least-expensive parts of Venezuela.
Merida has a lot of inexpensive posadas to pass the night and healthy but
inexpensive restaurants. If you go to Merida, expect some great service.
A few months ago while visiting Merida, I went to the Whiskeria Bar on
Urdaneta Avenue.
Parisian
Holiday Bliss ~ Advice
From Parler Paris ~ by Adrian Leeds - I am almost always home in Paris
for Christmas and New Year's Eve, too - mostly because so many friends
love to descend on Paris at this time of year. Obviously, it's a time when
people have vacation, but it's also such a romantic idea to celebrate the
holidays by strolling along the elegantly lit Champs-Elysées or
sipping on a spicy "vin chaud" in a corner café.
Biking
In Brazil ~ Up
Into The Mountains ~ by Shane Jackson - Morning rolled around and soon
my brother-in-law showed up for our Saturday ride. Anderson, having no
fat, weighing 18 lbs less and being 16 years younger meant I had a good
guide and trainer for the days ride. I knew roughly how to make it
back to the peak seen from our veranda. He could ask questions if need
be. I carried only a cell phone and a leatherman. He carried
a small day pack with tools, water, and my digital camera. Our goal was
around 15 miles away and at least 2000’ higher. It was a hot, dry
dusty day. I rode facing traffic on a small dirt trail that followed
the main highway. My first ride on the highway to Ibirité
made it pretty clear one would not live long on the asphalt without a motor.
Stopped at a couple horticultural shops on the outskirts of Ibirité
to marvel at the variety of plants offered and to plan the landscape project
for our place in the bairro. |

the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice
of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee:

Under
The Shade Of The Mango Tree ~ Into
The Colombian Amazon ~ by El Vagabundo - It had
been a particularly bad year for me. I hadn’t worked the entire year (thank
you Enron, Dick and George), my mother had passed away, and Plaintiff #2
took the kids and left. All this during an election year when the so-called
Patriot Act was being touted as an effective measure to make me feel safer
(no one of Middle Eastern descent had been detained, offended or otherwise
insulted but my abilities to travel freely and do as I please with my own
hard earned money have been seriously curbed), and the body count of young
Americans was on the rise in a war that fewer and fewer of the American
people wanted anything to do with.
Escape
To Geneva ~ What
You Need To Know To Make Your Escape ~ by Aimée Skidmore - The
young and famous; the rich and retired; the eccentric and persecuted have
all sought refuge in Switzerland for hundreds of years. Nastassja
Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Aga Khan, Alain Delon, and Yoko Ono are just a
few of the famous who have relocated to Geneva because of the appealing
surroundings, quality of life, and privacy afforded them. There are
many other benefits to living in Geneva as well. They city is small,
but urban. There are 178,000 residents in a city with a vibrant and
bustling downtown as well as quiet neighbourhoods.
The
Coronation Of A Cambodian King ~ King
Norodom Sihamoni ~ by Antonio Graceffo - A relentless Cambodian sun
played upon the highly-polished bayonets, affixed to the rifles of the
military honor guard, standing at rigid attention. Anxiously, they awaited
the arrival of Prince Norodom Sihamoni, who would soon be crowned the new
king of Cambodia. The droning chant of Buddhist monks could be heard across
the palace grounds, as history waited to be made. This would be the first
coronation of a new Cambodian king, in more than 60 years, when Prince
Norodom Sihamoni's father, King Norodom Sihanouk, ascended to the throne.
How
I Escaped The Greedy Hands Of The Great White North ~ Escaping
Canada ~ by Robert Hof - While the majority of articles on Escape Artist
are written from the American perspective, I thought I would write a few
words for the readers of Escape Artist from the perspective of your quiet
neighbours from the North. I have been reading Escape Artist for several
years now, and believe it’s now time to give back a bit to the site that
helped me come to the conclusion that leaving one’s country permenantly
can be a great thing to do.
Life
In New Zealand ~ Six
Months Later ~ by Rick Adams - They say if you do something every day
for two weeks it becomes a habit. We’ve been in Aotearoa (the native
Maori name for New Zealand meaning Land of the Long White Cloud) for about
six months now. Having moved from the American Southwest to the Southern
Hemisphere in June we (almost) feel like we belong here. And like
a marriage it sometimes seems like it’s been six years…but other times
like six days. It all depends on what we’re doing at the time.
When we’re in the middle of doing the day-to-day things everyone does we
sometimes feel like we’re still back in the “old country”, the exception
being that we can rejoice that Wal-Mart hasn’t found its way here yet.
Other times we feel like we’re on an extended vacation in a very magical
land filled with new things to see around every corner.
Local
Guide Solves Migration Dilemma ~ Moving
To Australia ~ by Liz Sharp - When Louisa and Robert Dawdy sold their
property and business in the UK and made the life-changing move to the
Gold Coast with their three children, they did not expect the challenges
that lay ahead. Almost 18 months after migrating, Ms Dawdy said the move
had been the hardest thing the family had ever done: “we expected to pick
up where we had left off – we sold up everything we had in England and
took it for granted that everything would fall into place over here”.
The
Life Of A Junior Elder In Colima ~ In
Mexico ~ by Jurgen Klemann - A little less than two years ago, I managed
to faint virtually in the middle of the campus after a soccer game. As
a result, I enjoyed more attention than I appreciate. The paramedic on
campus treated me with an oxygen mask whilst a whole bunch of students
watching the spectacle looked more worried than I was. A little less than
one year ago, I managed to crash with my head into a goal post during a
soccer game. When the paramedic had to treat me again, I am not sure whether
I really want to know what was going on in his mind.
Life
In India Without The Trappings Of Power ~ Getting
Around Power ~ by Manju Dubey - India when viewed through the eyes
of a Westerner is quaint, archaic, mystic and charming on the one hand.
On the other, it is a mosquito-ridden, poverty-ridden and full of religious
zealots. But to me India is a home like none other. Travelling within the
country fills me with pride and marvel: the uniqueness of this beautiful
land which is so rich in culture. These are oft-repeated cliches from Indian
authors. But the mystic, the charm and the cultural diversity are what
make India today what it is.

A
Beginner’s Guide To The “Multi-Currency Sandwich” ~ Investing
In Currencies ~ by Gary Scott - There’s a powerful investment strategy
I call the “multi-currency sandwich” that not only dramatically increases
profit potential but can also add safety to your portfolio. This tactic
is almost unknown in the United States, but is time tested and very popular
in other countries. I first learned and cashed in on this strategy in the
early 1980s when the United States was being ravaged by inflation. The
U.S. dollar had dropped strongly versus the Swiss franc. It was possible
to earn 18% on U.S. dollar CDs. When my Swiss banker told me that I could
use U.S. dollar CDs as collateral to borrow Swiss francs at 3% and reinvest
at 18%, I was hooked!

Buying
Real Estate In The Dominican Republic ~ Changes
For The Better In The DR ~ by Suzan Haskins - Luckily—besides the buffet
line at my hotels—this was the only time I would be kept waiting. For the
local poor people, though, I was to discover that it is a country of queues.
In every sizable town we passed through, people were waiting in lines,
holding propane tanks in the hopes they would be one of the lucky few who
would have them filled that day. It seems the Dominican government had
neglected to pay the Venezuelan government for the gas the latter country
has been selling them. No gas, no cooking.

A Place To Enjoy Your Time In Paris ~ by Will Sullivan - A French friend
of mine, Roget, once said to me that to experience France to its fullest,
you must live there, and not temporarily, but through each season of one
year to see how the country, the people and the language change. Witnessing
change is an important, if not imminent, facet of travel.

Islands
~ From
The Caribbean To The Mediterranean ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Whenever
or wherever I travel, I generally fall in love with some aspect of the
place I am visiting. But one type of destination stands out as a
consistent favorite – islands. Every island I have visited seems to have
a special culture, a certain relaxed atmosphere and its own set of rules
for living. You just know when you’ve stepped onto an island.
Beautiful
Sipadan ~ In
Malaysia ~ by David Lavoie - Sipadan Island is both famous and infamous.
A tiny, tropical forest-covered island of only thirty acres floating in
the royal blue of the Celebes Sea, it has been declared both a protected
area and a bird sanctuary by the Malaysian government. The island is indisputably
the most famous dive destination in Malaysia, with diving giants like Jacques
Cousteau praising enthusiastically the wonderful diversity of its marine
life.
Dodecanese
Islands Of Greece ~ Halki
And Tilos ~ by Richard Robinson - A fleck of limestone in the Aegean,
a few miles off Rhodes, that’s Halki. It has a small town at one end, a
monastery at the other and, snaking eight mountainous miles in between,
the intriguing Tarpon Springs Boulevard. As our holiday drew near, I was
beginning to think there wouldn’t be much to do. Better pack a couple of
extra books. Take the laptop, catch up on some writing. Halki, though,
exceeded expectations. In our first few days there we scaled the castle
heights and located the coat-of-arms of the Grand Master; we bumped along
the Boulevard on the back of a bread van and stayed the night in the monastery.
In the course of a single memorable afternoon, I rediscovered the lost
Temple of Apollo.
Late
Autumn In Laos ~ In
The Laotian Jungle ~ by John Spampinato - Strolling the leafy promenade
along the Mekong river I told myself to slow down and savor every
last minute of these last few hours before an interminable series of planes
and connections conveyed me back home to the other side of the world. Up
ahead a bench conveniently appeared as if to second the motion. Between
it and the river’s muddy banks, soil - Southeast Asia’s most fertile -
yielded corn and mustard, both of which would be replaced by rice before
the next monsoons. Field workers were bent in labor, their efforts typifying
the work ethic that permeated Lao culture, its contract with the land,
its compact with the seasons, its acceptance of the inevitable.
Feeling
Safe In Cambodia ~ Talking
To The Nerves ~ by Peter O’Dowd - I promise, I’m not a feeble man.
I’ve traveled through Kenya, studied in Europe, just finished a year working
in Japan, but there is a reaction I encounter whenever I cross a border
into a strange country for the first time; it’s a nervous feeling of impending
tragedy and Cambodia brought that out of me unlike any country I had ever
approached before. Our mission was to travel overland from Bangkok to Hanoi
via Cambodia, and I almost turned around before I got there because everything
I read and everyone I loved said, “No. Don’t do it. The place is too dangerous.”
By all accounts, they were right.
Jumping
Ship On The Nile ~ Seeking
Relief From Pharaonic Egypt ~ by Dorothy Aksamit - From the deck I
could see a jumble of dark wooden buildings with one brilliant blue door
of a tourist shop blazing beneath a white mosque. The adjacent tourist
street was well defined by overhead awnings. In short, just the sort of
town for wandering and in truth just the right time for a little relief
from the overwhelming grandeur of the Pharaohs. Having crouched in the
tunnel of Cheop's Pyramid, stood like ants in the shadow of Ramesses II
at Abu Simbel, sailed to Philae and marveled at lesser temples, each worthy
of a trip to Egypt, I was on monument overload.
Yak
Butter Blues ~ A
Tibetan Trek Of Faith ~ by Brandon Wilson - The wind kicks up again.
A vast, desolate swath of sand stretches for miles, days in any direction.
We are insignificant: insects trudging across a desert. Meager possessions
are slung across a patient horse’s back. Once-strong bodies buckle under
the pervasive wind. We bend double, choking on dust. Sand invades every
pore. Pus seeps into stiff socks from sores pocking our feet. Hopelessness,
undeniable hunger and unquenchable thirst fill us with a gnawing rage.
Hira
Gasy ~ Music
In The Highlands Of Madagascar ~ by Rabenilaina Harinia Cyrille - Malagasy
people like dancing and singing. From the North to the South, from the
East to the west, by the way of the High plains, Madagascar sings and dances.
Not only to modern rhythms, no necessarily to world music. Like the other
countries in the world, Madagascar has its own culture and tradition. This
tradition is alive and kicking throughout the country in many guises. Popular
culture needs no electricity, stage or professional artists. In a country
so impregnated with the memory of its ancestors, songs and dances remind
of the depth of its roots whilst at the same time entertain the community.
Such diversity is in keeping with the size of the country which comprises
18 ethnic groups, despite obvious similarities from on group to another.
New
Zealand’s Waitomo Caves ~ Explorations
~ by Kyle Hammons - In a country brimming with adventure, visitors to New
Zealand are faced with choosing from a myriad of adrenaline-pumping activities.
The country that invented bungee jumping is the same place that offers
jet boating, zorbing and fly-by-wire. Though skydiving and river
rafting provide thrilling rides, it was a trip to Waitomo Caves that will
always linger in my memory.
El
Mirador In Panama ~ Looking
For A View ~ by Matthew Atlee - Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park
(also known as El Cope National Park) is located in the province of Cocle,
about a 4 hour drive to the west of Panama City. The Park is not well known
even to Panamanians, but the Park has one of the best views of both the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, at least during certain times of the year.
I say at least during certain times of the year because most of the time
the point where you can see both oceans is covered in fog. This point is
known as El Mirador. On this trip and for this article, it was my intention
to drive to El Mirador in order to give people an idea of the incredible
view of both oceans that you can enjoy in Omar Torrijos Herrera National
Park.
