Coke
– It's The Real Thing ~ Flying
Cocaine From Curaçao To The Netherlands ~ by Steve Leslie -
After a nine hour flight from Curaçao to Amsterdam, we had finished
securing B767-200 TF-ATY, and were preparing to leave the aircraft and
make haste to our layover hotel. As I stepped out of the flight deck, I
noticed a number of Dutch customs officers looking very much like Israeli
commandos standing by the 1L (left forward) entry door. The “commandos”
were waiting for the last passengers to deplane, so that they could initiate
a routine search of the aircraft.
John
Wayne Island ~ In
An Imaginary Tropical Western ~ by Matthew Atlee - It was only after
I had been in Panama for three or four years that I began to hear about
John Wayne in Panama. A friend told me that he had spent a lot of time
in Panama during the 1960s and at one point had owned an island in Panama
as well as being a part owner of a shrimp business. Apparently, Wayne liked
fishing and of course Panama has the best fishing in the world; in fact,
Panama, the word, means an abundance of fish. For years I was unable to
decipher which island John Wayne owned or where the island might be located;
it was only recently – the last year or so - that I realized that a John
Wayne Island did in fact exist and that there was a project being developed
on the island by some Austrians.
We
Did It! - Chapter Three ~ The
Magic Of New Zealand ~ by Rick Adams - Springtime in New Zealand is
a magical time. It seems like everything is green and everything
is blooming. The trouble with that is that’s exactly how winter,
summer and fall seem as well. At least that what it looks like to
us! Oh sure, some plants that bloom in the winter wouldn’t be caught
dead showing their flowers in the summer. But overall, there are
a lot of things growing year-round in New Zealand. That probably
explains why there are more nurseries here than gas stations. Everyone
(including – believe it or not – me!) has a green thumb in New Zealand
or so it would seem. |

A
Crash Course On Teaching English In Chiang Mai
~ In
Thailand ~ by M.J. Young - Some say the walled
city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand has all of the cultural benefits
of Bangkok without the traffic and pollution. With bustling night markets,
eclectic restaurants, jungle treks, craft villages and over 300 temples
(wats) it’s understandably a popular tourist destination. But more than
160,000 residents call the northern capital home, and many of them are
foreigners.
Bolivian
Safari ~ Salar
de Uyuni, Bolivia ~ by Mark McMahon - The far southwest corner of Bolivia
is home to some of the most bizarre and extreme landscapes in the world.
By far the world's largest salt flat and some other very interesting geology
make it and unforgettable place to visit. The harsh and inhospitable environment
also make the visit hard to forget. Bitter cold and blistering sun made
comfort a sparse commodity on the four-day adventure.
A
Few More Thoughts On Latin America ~ Uncovering
Treasures ~ by Jurgen Klemann - Based on my experience
gathered in Colima during the past three years, Latin Americans with international
experience rather form a tiny minority. Of course there are a few. But
they are rather the exception to the rule. Whilst cruising around all over
the globe I cannot claim to have bumped into hordes of Latin Americans.
As a rule, Latin Americans seem to be into the family thing. The whole
tribe tends to reside where the folks reside. The result is that the overwhelming
majority of Latin Americans may be described as more than just a little
provincial. Considering my globe trotting this sort of background makes
me stand out of the crowd in Colima.

Make Money Overseas - Writing eBooks
For EscapeArtist.com - Writing
eBooks For A Living -
What we're looking for are ideas, not Pulitzer Prize writers. Ideas are
what fuel our magazine and our website. Now we want to expand that
concept into eBooks for expats. You don't have to be a professional
writer to submit a report that provides important information - - information
that you yourself have learned by having been there and done it. That is
exactly what our readers are seeking, facts about living overseas from
people who've done it, facts about buying a barge and sailing down the
Danube, what it takes to migrate to Argentina, how to open a business in
Prague, buy an island in Belize, get a job in Paris, start a farm in Mozambique,
run an internet business out of the Dominican Republic, run a rent-a-scooter
shop in Mauritius. |

Moving
To Canada ~ Advice
On Traveling Through Canada ~ by Thelma O’ Connor -f you are planning
a two or three week trip, my suggestion to you would be to fly into a major
city and make side trips from that location, then fly on to the next major
city and do the same. This type of trip will give you better value for
your time/money and you will have an opportunity to explore each major
centre and the surrounding cities and towns in a more meaningful and unhurried
way.

EscapeArtist Special Report is intended for those readers who are seriously
considering moving to Thailand for a prolonged period, or perhaps for the

Estate Investment In The Caribbean ~ Dominica,
The "Nature" Island ~ by Deb Andrews - Half way along the curved necklace
of islands comprising the Windward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean basks
a mountainous rock of 290 sq miles (750 sq km). At longitude 61º
20W, and latitude 15º 25N, Dominica is a land of steep mountains and
cliffs plummeting straight into the blue Caribbean sea on the western side
and the grey Atlantic on the eastern. Rising at the highest point
to Mt. Diablotin at 4,747 ft. (1,447m), this is a country of raw beauty,
rugged headlands and moody mountains, their peaks often buried in cloud.

Explorations
In The Amazon Basin ~ Into
The Unknown ~ by John Spampinato - So I show up for work one morning
- one which began pretty much like every other day I had faithfully dedicated
to the company for the previous sixteen years - only to be told that tomorrow
was to be my last. I suppose at some subconscious level I had seen it coming.
A seed had been planted weeks earlier when the new president called together
his bloated staff to announce - in a masterful example of the subtle hint
- that “…we have way too many managers”. But being laid off caused no major
anxiety on my part. I saw a rare opportunity.
Sint
Maarten/Saint Martin ~ The
Friendly Island - France and the Netherlands have shared this haven
of sand, sea and sun peacefully for more than three centuries. The Dutch
call it Sint Maarten and on the French side the signs say Saint Martin.
Not that there is a particularly obvious separation. You can drive, or
walk, over a border untended and unmarked except for a sign of welcome
to one country or the other. St. Maarten/St. Martin is the smallest island
in the world to be shared by two sovereign powers and it has been that
way since 1648 when France and the Netherlands signed a partition treaty.
However, over the years people of many different nationalities have made
their home on the island and have influenced its development.
Lions,
Vampires,
Bears, And Gypsys ~ Romania,
Gem Of The Balkans ~ by Jocelyn Carnegie - Bucharest is a striking
mélange of different cultural influences. Historically, the Romanians
have looked north and west to their European and Slavic neighbors for their
cultural, emotional, and religious succor, spending most of their leisure
time keeping the Turks out of Europe.
Spain
~ Revival
Of Arab Baths ~ by Richard Robinson - In the shadow of the fabulous
Alhambra palace, El Bañuelo survives as an empty shell, the last
Arab bath in Granada. The rich carving and tiling, the hot running water
have long gone, but shafts of sunlight fire through star-shaped openings
in the vaulted roof, creating a shadow-play among the silent pillars, the
arches and the bare stone walls. In Moorish times in Al-Andalus (the name
given to the Moorish dominions in Spain) there was a bath on every street,
gurgling with steaming water, crowded with the devout going about their
ablutions. The city of Córdoba alone could boast 600 public baths
in its 11th-century heyday.
Western
Canada Part One ~ Walk
With Dinosaurs ~ by Dawnelle Salant - When I tell other travelers that
I’m from Canada, they inevitably ask, “Toronto or Vancouver?” In fact,
I come from nowhere near either of these wonderful cities. There is so
much more to Canada than many people are aware of, and although Vancouver
and Toronto are cities worth visiting, there are many other lesser known
sites that deserve some attention. Western Canada - Alberta and Eastern
British Columbia (the opposite side of the province from Vancouver) - has
activities and destinations to cater to all types of travelers. See what
you’ve been missing!
Paris
~ For
An Escapeartist ~ by Will Sullivan - When the sun rises and sets, it's
thinking of Paris. So should we all. Paris is not only a mindset; it's
a memory of something deep inside of us, of love, of faith, of the grand
expectations of civilization. Often, this is simply called romance. And
what isn't romantic about a place so grand, that each alleyway, each square,
and each small, hidden, fountain-graced Place is beset with its own memories
and mysteries, its own essential facet of a une belle époque?
The
People Of Mekong Island ~ On
The Tone Lesap River ~ by Antonio Graceffo - Her hands shook as she
poured the watery rice mix into the stone bowl. With effort, she lifted
the heavy crank into place, and began to turn. Slowly, with the patience
of ages, a frothy porridge of ricey paste began to trickle out of the spout,
and into the pail. Seeing that her work was going well, Sae breathed a
sigh of reliefe, and resumed her constant narration. "I takes three cans
of rice to fill one bucket. And, I have to turn the crank for one hour."
She told me. "When the bucket is full, I will make a batch of rice cakes."
The cakes are a favorite treat for the local children.
Brittany's
Watchers In The Woods ~ In
France ~ by Andrew Hartnagel - As anyone in the tourism industry knows,
planning is essential. Perhaps no entrepreneurs were so aware of
this as the early Neolithic people who once inhabited the far northwest
corner of France known as Brittany. Their capitalist skills were
so finely honed that they erected a host of mysterious stones and tombs
in anticipation of the next 5,000 years of curious travelers. Brilliant.
10
Things To Know Before You Head Off To The Balkans ~ Discovering
The Balkans ~ by Rebecca Patrick - Roman palaces, palm trees, dark
lofty mountains, and fabulous beaches typically aren’t the first things
that come to one’s mind when picturing the Balkans-but they should be!
Ten years ago, the Balkan War was still raging and the only people going
in and out of Croatia and Bosnia were relief workers, military personnel,
and war journalists. But, the times are changing. Although the tourists
aren’t flocking back quite as quickly as they left, the tourism industry
is alive and well in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia.
In
Search Of Captain Zero ~ Sea
Of Cortez And Waves ~ by Allan Weisbecker - The Pacific’s next northwest
groundswell having expired to an effete slurp and, further, having suddenly
been possessed to see the sun rise over the water rather than set, I find
I’m camped on the sea of Cortez – on North American maps referred to as
the Gulf of California – the narrow body of water that separates Baja peninsula
from mainland Mexico to the east. Apart from two local fishermen
ensconced at an ad hoc little fish camp a half mile or so down the beach
to the south, I have encountered not a soul since my arrival two days ago.
Twelve
Days In Moscow ~ Adventures
In Moscow ~ by Miriyam Nitzberg - I am an American who has lived in
Europe for the past 12 years. Dan and I worked on a project together
in Prague for six weeks in 2001. Dan went back to London at the end
of that period but we remained friends. In February of 2003 Dan went
to live and work in Moscow. In July of 2004 just after I had completed
my Law Society exams in England, I went to see Dan in Moscow before returning
home to Prague.
