Visa Run - Off
To Malayasia ~ by Bart Walters - Last week I engaged in a common occurrence
among expats here in Thailand—the visa run. Both my business partner and
I were due for out 90-day excursion outside the Kingdom of Thailand, to
satisfy our non-immigrant B visas granted to us for business purposes.
Visas and changes in visa policy are part of life as a foreigner in the
Kingdom of Thailand. Until recently, visa and work permit requirements
for most western developed countries and rich Asian countries were pretty
relaxed. Visa extensions, long-term, and multi-entry visas could be had
cheaply and hassle-free. |

& Anecdotes, Part 2 - More
On Living In New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - This month three close
American friends have been in Paris at the same time. As the time differences
between France and New Zealand are literally night and day -14 hours at
opposite times - the internet (which is usually so helpful) doesn’t work
well for communication. The three also know each other through relationships
with my husband who died this past July - one is his sister - yet none
were able to meet up with each other as I was hoping.

Family of Four Follows Its Rainbow To a Remote Island in Panama - Bocas
Del Toro Panama - A Very Hip Place - The hipness of the place
is phenomenal. There is actually a restaurant, called Crawl Key Restaurant,
(Or: Kraal Cay) that is 20 minutes by boat from Bocas town, situated on
the southeastern side of Bastimentos Island, and surrounded by lush mangrove.
The island is in the middle of no place, if one ignores the fact that it
is one very exciting location.
FINANCING
YOUR FRENCH PROPERTY - Buying
In France - As a foreigner buying property in France, we recommend
obtaining the mortgage through a French bank for two very important reasons.
First, because our agency is in daily communication with several of the
largest financial institutions in Europe and can therefore help you receive
the credit you are looking for (which are not obtainable by individual
devices). Most of these banks specialize in non-resident loans, and we
will be there to guide you through the process to be sure everything runs
smoothly. Second, because in the case of a Leaseback program you will receive
your rental income in €uros.
Freeport,
Grand Bahama - Queen
Of The Bahamas ~ by Joan Harris - For those of you who have not yet
experienced the delights of this fascinating Island I offer a brief background.
Freeport is situated on Grand Bahama Island, the northernmost of the Bahamian
Islands and only 60 miles from Palm Beach. It is nearly l00 miles long
and part of the 700 Islands of the Bahamas known in the main as “cays”.
The beaches on the south side consist of seemingly endless bountiful bays
of soft sifting silver sand with the ocean ranging through shades of ultramarine,
turquoise and palest blue.
Love
At First Sight - The
Historical City Of Antigua, Guatemala ~ by Brian Wilson - Love at first
sight is the comment most often heard from those who pass through the historical
city of Antigua, Guatemala, in the country of the “Eternal Spring”. Countless
people from all corners of the world have made the decision that “Antigua
is the place to be”, and I for one, made that decision over 13 years ago
without a single regret.

Emerging
Markets and Economic Geography - Economic
Growth Around The World ~ by Jurgen Klemann - Let us have a brief glance
at economic geography. That glance will help us realize that throughout
history a great deal of cities and civilizations have prospered and later
on virtually gone south. Early strongholds of prosperity in history clustered
along the Nile and Euphrates as well as the Silk Road. Babylon, Persepolis
and Samarkand may serve as illustrations here. When the Phoenicians prevailed
because of their extensive trade, the Mediterranean flourished economically.
Strongholds of prosperity were then – among others – Athens and Rome.
In
Praise Of Cowards - Thoughts
On France And America ~ by Bill Bonner - One of the many conceits Americans
permit themselves is that they bravely face up to the world's terrorist
menace, while others - most notably, the French - cower in fear. Elsewhere,
in the International Herald Tribune, comes a letter to the editor in which
the writer takes issue with an apparently widespread report that John Kerry
is worried about looking "too French" and that this is a sign of "weakness"
in the eyes of the lumpen voters.
Asset
Protection - Moving
Offshore ~ by Frank M. Ahearn - In my last article I taught you how
to disappear. This week I was stranded in a hotel room held hostage by
daytime TV. I have to admit, it was a horrible experience yet enlightening.
Like a thunder bolt I realized that I had neglected to explain why one
should disappear or perhaps at least consider protecting their assets,
by going offshore. So here I am, lost in hotel hell, flicking from one
talk show to another.

Britain
- Beyond
London ~ by Dawnelle Salant - When most people think of Britain, the
exciting and ever changing city of London immediately comes to mind. Don’t
get me wrong, I love London and all it has to offer. But everyone knows
what’s there. Even if you’ve never been to the island’s most popular city,
you’re likely familiar with the history, sights and activities that make
London one of the world’s most popular destinations. Even though Britain
is a small island, it has plenty to offer if you ever tire of the big city.
Cancun
Night Out - Where
To Go ~ by Dorothy Aksamit - O.K. So you've had eight meals at your
All-Inclusive-Resort, have tried their "reservations only" restaurants
and while it was all savory it's time for a change - it's time to sample
Cancun's culinary offerings. Not as simple as it sounds as Cancun has several
hundred restaurants. The first decision will be "What kind of food". Check
your hotel lobby for brochures such as the Restaurant Menu Map and be sure
to check with the tour desks and the public relations manager. To get you
started consider one of the following, a meager offering from the many
available, hop in a taxi (they're cheap) and you'll discover another Cancun.
To
The End Of The World - Part
4: From Small Town Brazil To Patagonia ~ by Charles Ragsdale - Two
months into what was to have been an extended stay volunteering in
a remote part of Brazil’s Espiritu Santo province, the pull of wanderlust
came over me once again and I decided to return to the road. For the past
month I had lived in a cabin on the plantation of a local coffee farmer
I befriended, far outside the rural town of Pancas where I had been going
during the day to teach English.
“Passion
Of Rome” - Semester
Abroad ~ by Nicholas Pellicani - Rome has been called the Caput Mundi,
or Capital of the World. While its present day relevance has diminished
of late, it still conjures up images of Julius Caesar inspiring, elaborate
papal processions, and Mussolini yelling from the balcony. A semester
abroad allowed myself the opportunity to stroll through the beautiful piazza’s
and feast on the world’s best food, but I was not prepared for the impression
one magical night would leave on me. It would be a calm, modest,
yet deeply spiritual night shared by thousands, which would forever make
Rome a part of me.
Kangding
- On
The Road To Tibet ~ by Satina Anziano - Going to church on Sunday.
Now, what could be more ordinary? Well, for me, the nearest church
means a trip to Kangding, and a trip to Kangding is far from the ordinary.
'Kangding' is what the Chinese now call it. Dartsedo, the meeting
place - of two rivers, and of traders - is what the Tibetans have always
called it. Closed off until recently, few westerners have heard the
call of her river and the rugged beauty of her mountains.

The Hills Above Panama City - Cerro
Azul ~ by Zvia Leibler-Danon - Whether you are living in Panama or
are just in the city for a business trip – you may feel the need for relief
from the hot muggy weather in your free time. If so, then do what
the natives do – head for the hills. To ensure that the break you
take offers a unique and relaxing experience, as well as cooler weather,
head for Cerro Azul.
Panama
And Costa Rica - Thoughts
On Both ~ by Matthew Atlee - One of my favorite countries to visit
is Costa Rica. It has become a favorite destination for many people: an
average of 750,000 people a year visit Costa Rica. In 1994 tourism surpassed
coffee and bananas as the biggest industry in Costa Rica: one in ten people
work in the tourist industry. Of course, this has meant that the country
sometimes feels as though it is being trampled over by tourists, and the
ugly side of tourism – prostitution and child sex – are very evident in
Costa Rica. Despite all the heavy traffic in tourists, Costa Rica still
offers the traveler some of the most incredible scenery in Latin America.
