Is
There Trouble In Paradise? - In
New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - During the Depression, young, and without
clear direction, he had done a stint with the Army in Panama. Then, he
enlisted in the Navy. When War II began, he found himself on a destroyer,
the USS Nashville (CL-43), headed for the Solomon Islands. On their way
down the ship stopped at an unknown (to him) island to let the sailors
have a little R&R before heading into battle.
Carnival
2004 - Friends,
Tight Spaces And Bells Scotch ~ by Matthew Atlee - Carnival 2004 started
with an emergency operation on Friday morning that landed me in the hospital
- I didn’t have the operation. Luckily, we were able to leave the
hospital Friday night and I was able to return to my house by Saturday
morning. And so Friday night we began celebrating Carnival. This Carnival
we didn’t go anywhere, which was what we wanted. Rather, it was a Carnival
filled with hermetically sealed rooms, sick people, guests, DVDs and real
estate talk - all with very good air condtioning in the background.
To
The End Of The World - Part
3: Near Disaster in Amazonas ~ by Charles Ragsdale - Last year,
during a seven-month period, the author drove nearly 25,000 miles in a
1988 Toyota 4Runner from Connecticut all the way to the southernmost city
in the world – Usuhaia, Argentina, passing through some of the world’s
most beautiful scenery on some of the world’s worst maintained and most
dangerous roads. He ended his twelve country odyssey in Paraguay, where
he sold his car and flew home to the USA, forever changed by his life on
the road during what was a truly remarkable undertaking. While a full recounting
of his journey would require many volumes, the author has agreed to provide
us with glimpses and insight into what he experienced. This is the third
in a series of five articles.
Notes
From The Road - Robin
In Argentina ~ by Robin Sparks - It's been a year since I temporarily
set aside my search for a country to return to San Francisco. When I left
Asia this time last year, I decided to stay put in my home in San Francisco
for one year. I still had slight misgivings about my desire t o live abroad.
Was I running from something? If I put in consistent time in San Francisco
would I find my purpose here? I would give the States one last chance.
Living
In Saudi Arabia - Living
And Working In The Saudi Kingdom ~ by Eric Hooton - The images on the
news and the Internet last November of yet another compound bombing in
Riyadh were especially disconcerting, as the damaged compound just below
King Fahd’s palace was our home for 2 years from 1996 to 1998.
Yunnan
- Vacation
In China ~ by Adam Geisler -Having just been blown over by an early
precursor of an infamous Beijing sandstorm, my mind drifts back to a recent
trip to Yunnan province. Yunnan is about as far away as one can get
from Beijing on the Chinese mainland. Colorful in many senses of
the word, the southwest corner of China boasts a diverse motif of people,
places, and topography unseen elsewhere in the country.

Experience
Spain And Learn Spanish - Studying
In Spain At Don Quijote Language School - Spain is a really seductive
country. In January 2000 I came from Brazil to Salamanca (In the North
West Spain) for a short stay to learn Spanish and see for myself all the´exotic
landscapes I imagined while hearing fairy tales in my childhood. I decided
to stay longer and four years later I'm still here. In my opinion this
country is one of the best places to live in the world. In the lines below
you'll find out why Spain is so interesting and why it is so important
to learn Spanish nowadays. Life is good in Spain and people know how to
enjoy it. |

Brazilian
Art - The
Culture And Art Of Brazil's Indigenous Community ~ by Ashley Riley
Lopes - It is here in Mato Grosso, Brazil, nestled in the heart of agri-business
country, surrounded by deafening waterfalls, clear-water rivers, fields
of soy as long as the eye can see, we live. Though we choose to live
in a modest house, surrounded by a pleasant garden and small businesses,
not all of our neighbors are what one would call middle-class."Nor are
they modern" they are Indians, descendents of the original peoples who
populated vast Brazil. Not far from our home live tribes like the
Paresi, the Bororo, and the Umutina.

Panama
- Noriega
~ by R.M. Koster - Manuel Noriega has written his memoirs with the help
of Peter Eisner. I witnessed the events their book refers to, often at
closer range than I would have liked. I took an active part in some--e.g.,
replacing the 1903 canal treaty with more equitable instruments. My wife
Otilia ran a human rights center that worked with Physicians for Human
Rights, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and similar groups documenting
and at times relieving abuses. Her work furnished a unique perspective
on General Noriega's approach to statecraft--for instance this innovation
in handling dissent: in 1988 and 1989 a number of political detainees were
raped by HIV carriers, and all were routinely threatened with it.

A
Critical Look At South Africa - Politics
And Economics ~ by Jurgen Klemann - When I worked for a business and
management consulting firm in Johannesburg, the first multi – racial election
was held in South Africa. The days of the election were proclaimed public
holidays. On the first morning of the election, as I did not have to work,
I went to my favourite restaurant in Jo’burg for an extensive breakfast.
When turning around the corner, I realized all of a sudden that the police
had done a complete road block.
Vindication
For The Fed? - Sir
Alan Applauds Himself For His Success In Preventing All But "An Exceptionally
Mild Recession." But What Exactly Was "Exceptionally Mild" About The Recession
- And Is It A Good Thing? The Good Doctor Has His Doubts ~ by Kurt
Richebächer - Manifestly, there is general overwhelming optimism about
the U.S. economy. Positive arguments abound: Thirteen rate cuts and the
lowest interest rates in decades; runaway money and credit creation; rampant
fiscal stimulus; the long and strong rally in the stock market; persistent,
massive wealth creation through rising house and stock prices; an impending,
powerful boost to output from a widespread need to replenish run-down inventories;
reported strong profit gains promising an additional strong boost to business
investment, returning job growth; surging commodity prices; and the strong
stimulus to exports from the slide in the dollar.

Baja - A
Birthday ~ by Allan Weisbecker - Deep dusk now and as the beach fire
and revelry in front of my campsite attracts the assorted wave-obsessed
misfits, bohemian athletes, stoned idiots and former and current outlaws
who have settled at or are passing through lower Baja, my 49th birthday
party is starting to have the feel of a tribal gathering.
Spooked
In Scotland - Supernatural
Shenanigans In Black-Hearted Edinburgh ~ US$1 equals 0.57 British pounds
~ by Steenie Harvey - moonless night at the Mercat Cross on Edinburgh’s
Royal Mile—and it’s Ghost Busters gone mad. Thirty people are following
a black-cloaked witch down Advocate’s Close. From the screeches, something
nasty is happening in the City Chambers porticoes...maybe it’s to do with
the body-snatcher now racing down High Street. And here comes a vampire,
chivvying his charges behind St. Giles High Kirk. There’ll soon be more
screams if the trailing brown-cowled monk is a “jumper-oot.”
Istanbul
- History
Comes to Life ~ by Dawnelle Salant - There is only one city in the
world that spans two continents. The true merging of east and west, ?stanbul
stretches across both Europe and Asia. The continents are separated only
by a thin strip of water, the Bosphorus. To stand at the edge of one continent
and look at the other provides a thrill even greater than straddling the
Prime Meridian and being in two different
hemispheres.
ROUND
THE WORLD IN ……….DAYS - Living
The Dream, A New Zealand Families Sailing Adventures ~ by John &
Vickie Billingham - 3 years ago now, the urge to travel again became overwhelming.
We were doing particularly well in our adopted home, the small but picturesque
town of Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand, with a beautiful B&B lodge,
successful computer centre and my wife, Vickie's founding participation
in a comedy theatre troupe. But we decided that the time had come
for a change, definitely against our better judgment financially!
So, the decision being made, we began the process of selling up all we
owned and preparing to move on. The same had happened whilst we were
living in Malaysia. We had spent 6 years building a solid financial
base, I with a yachting Company and Vickie the head of an international
school in Kuala Lumpur, when the wanderlust struck.
Armenian
Odyssey - Discovering
The Soul Of Armenia ~ by Dorothy Aksamit - "Oh", said the young woman
standing beside us at the baggage queue at the airport in Yerevan, "they've
changed already". Blowing kisses to the two little girls peeking
from behind bouquets of roses, she told us she lived in Kosovo with her
husband who is with the UNDP peacekeeping mission. "I come home every
three months, but children change so quickly." I agreed it must be
difficult and then she said, "But of course you know our history. It is
important that my children stay in Armenia and speak Armenian." The young
mother assumed we were visiting our family.
Nosy
Be - The
Little Great Island In The North Of Madagascar ~ by Rabenilaina Harinia
Cyrille - Nosy Be, situated in the North of Madagascar, in the Mozambique
Canal Waters. This great island has been granted several nicknames in the
course of centuries. The most relevant of those nicknames seems to be “Nosy
Manitra” (the scented island in Malagasy). Getting down from the plane
in Fascene airport, you will feel the ylang ylang, frangipani tree, coffee,
cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar cane balmy fragrances are almost being
aggressive towards you.
Return
To Paris - Adventure
In Paris ~ by Hugh Phelan - The only thing that distracted me
from the severe pain in my back was the excruciating pain in my shoulders.
Matters were of course compounded by the fact that I barely knew were I
was, wasn’t sure if I was pronouncing the name of the place I was trying
to get to properly and even if I was, I had no idea how to get there. Life
underneath the city was proving difficult.
The
Bus To Bulawayo - In
Zimbabwe ~ by Bethany Morrison - I dream of a journey; some days I
dream of nothing else. I travel with a small bag and the clothes on my
back. I leave my Irish home and walk to the bus stop at the end of my lane.
I wait there for a bus. A Bulawayo bound bus, with ‘Zupco’ written on its
cream exterior, the rust-eroded exhaust pipe billowing black smoke as it
approaches. I see it coming towards me, a large tin contraption likely
to fall apart with the slightest discrepancy in the flattened tarmac.
