A
Hint Of Indian Adds All The More Flavor To The Tangaráense Mix -
Mato
Grosso, Brazil ~ by Ashley Riley Lopes - Tangará da Serra, Mato
Grosso, has become quite “chic” as of late. The city’s 60,000 or so inhabitants
have become the envy of many of their fellow Mato Grossenses, promising
residents of the small, peaceful town the advantages of shopping malls,
boutiques and high-speed agribusiness without the scorching heat of its
neighbor Cuiaba or the rough, unbearable roads of Sapezal.
Living
In North Yorkshire - In
The North Of England ~ by Eric Hooton - Buckingham Palace, the Tower
Bridge, Stonehenge and Big Ben are some of the places people think of when
traveling to England becomes part of their vacation plans. These are all
wonderful places and well worth visiting; yet some of the most beautiful
and authentically “English” parts of England have to be the Yorkshire Dales.
This includes the East and West ridings, or counties, of Yorkshire, and
the largest county in England, the county of North Yorkshire.
Maya
Still Life -Puerto
Morelos In 1984 ~ by Jeanine Lee Kitchel - We stumbled onto Puerto
Morelos quite by accident in 1984 when my husband and I were criss-crossing
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, searching for a place that felt like home.
While standing on a jungle road sixty miles south of Cancun waiting for
a bus that surely didn’t exist, we watched a small, rusty Honda round
the corner from Highway 307 and like magic, glide carefully in front of
us to a slow, deliberate stop.
Christmas
In Zurich - New
Toys And Old ~ by Bonnie Burns - Nice article about Christmas in Germany
and Switzerland. Bonnie takes us to the Cristkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg,
Germany as well as the Spielzeugmuseum toy museum. Bonnie gives us an idea
of what it feels like to be caught up in the Christmas mood in Germany. |

Living
Large In Buenos Aires ~ Argentina
~ by Mark McMahon - At the moment it doesn’t take much to live large in
Argentina. Since the currency was devalued, just having dollars enables
a nice standard of living. You get three times more bang for your buck
than you did in 2001. And they do know how to live here. With a long tradition
of dining out and great ingredients (especially if beef is your thing)
you simply can’t go wrong in restaurants here.
The
Czech Republic - Worth
A Look ~ Ilia Stavrovski - Let's start with the fact, that for a lot
of readers of this newsletter leaving their home country will mean tremendous
tax savings (for Americans living abroad, all income up to 75000 is tax
deductible, for many other countries all income is.) Sure, if you are a
construction worker, you will not be able to find a job in Prague, that
will pay you as much as your current job in LA, but if you are a privacy
consultant, Internet entrepreneur or stock-market trader, you might as
well do it from here. The communications are about as good as in Germany,
and in the small beautiful village in the mountains where I live, I have
a phone line with ISDN, cellular coverage and satellite dish for my CNN
and CNBC.

Magical
Memories Of An Isolated Desert Island Idyll - All
Free Of Tax ~ by Joan Harris - Seymour (my husband) and I had
become disenchanted with our hectic lives in Westminster, London where
we had worked for 15 years so were ready for the challenge of a desert
island which we purchased in March, 1962. It was named Rudder Cut Cay in
the Southern Bahamas and consisted of 363 virgin acres. I was thrilled
with the seemingly endless white sandy beaches, the turquoise ocean
and was blissfully unaware of the daunting problems which faced us. Seymour,
now retired, was a Civil Engineer/Architect who relished the prospect of
complete freedom and building without impediment or restrictions. Nonetheless,
I was faced with the more mundane matters of ordering non-perishable
food in sufficient quantities to last us for our initial four-month sojourn. |
Visiting
The Wounaan In Panama - Looking
At Panama's Pre-Modern World ~ by Malcolm Couch - Getting to Panama
is easy, and one of the activities that you might want to consider during
a trip is a visit to one of the indigenous people who live in the rainforest.
One such people is the Wounaan. As there are now probably less than 3,000
Wounaan people following the old ways, spending a day to visit them not
only gives you exposure to living history but also allows you to help directly
without interfering with their way of life.
La
Jolla B&B In Mazatlan - South
Of The Border ~ by Miles F. Porter IV and Mary E. Staby - Harry and
Bunny Eyer's La Jolla Pension in Mazatlan, Mexico, is a focal point for
a quiet revolution under way in restoring the city's Centro Historico district,
with much of the effort coming from a growing number of American ex-pats.
MY
LITTLE WORLD GETS SHAKEN ~ Pavones,
Costa Rica ~ by Allan Weisbecker - For a natural born skeptic like
me, living here at Pavones - at the end of the road at the bottom of Central
America - has been a revelation in many ways. Like the moon thing.

Better For Less Money In Thailand !
A Guide To Living, Retiring, Working and Doing Business in Thailand. This
EscapeArtist Special Report is intended for those readers who are seriously
considering moving to Thailand for a prolonged period, or perhaps for the
rest of their lives. The contents focus less upon the sort of information
usually found in the popular tourist guides (hotels, restaurants, entertainment
etc) and more upon the practical realities of moving to and successfully
living in the Land of Smiles. Thailand is a wonderful place to live, but
a move to the country is not without it’s attendant difficulties. This
Report aims to help the reader to achieve a smooth transition to a new
life in the Kingdom - Get

A Writing Course for Expats - Expat
Writers Course - You want to live overseas.
You want to live free. You want to be your own boss and keep your own hours.
The question is how do you make a living. The first answer that comes to
mind is writing. At least that is the first answer that came to my
mind. Writing is a good way to make a living overseas; travel articles,
newspaper stringers, stuff for the folks back home. It takes practice
to write, but it can be learned, just as one learns to tie their shoes,
or stand one leg. It isn't an automatic process, but what is?
Now there is an expat writers course that can show you the basics...
next you'll be living in Paris and sitting in hip cafes... or maybe
you'll be in Budapest writing an ebook. Check it out. |

Altos
del Maria - Another
Look ~ by Matthew Atlee - I recently visited Altos del Maria
and enjoyed seeing how the project is developing. As part of my visit I
was able to meet with some of the new residents of the community. All told
me they were happy to be living in Altos del Maria: clean environment,
friendly neighbors and plenty to do. If you are thinking about investing
in property overseas then Altos del Maria might be the place for you.
Two
Years On In Thailand - US$1
equals 40.15 Thai baht ~ by John P. Seely - We’d been regular visitors
to Thailand for years, so when we finally decided to make a permanent home
here we had an idea what we were letting ourselves in for. The low cost
and the high standard of living attracted us, as well as the warm welcome
offered to foreigners. We decided on the mountainous northern section of
the country, because it offered the best climate for us, and was unspoiled
and undeveloped. At the same time, it had all the modern conveniences we
needed and was easy to get to.

The
Madness Of George II - Squeeze
A Human Heart, And The Slime Oozes Out ~ By Bill Bonner - The list
of stable paper currencies built by central bankers is as short as the
list of stable democracies built by armed invaders. Some basic grease in
the human heart seems to work against them. When bankers discover that
they can increase the supply of money simply by printing up some worthless
paper, they don't seem able to stop themselves. Soon, there is too much
paper and it becomes worthless. And when foreigners invade a country -
even foreigners who think they have a better idea how to run the place
- the locals seem to resent it. That may not stop us from hoping. But readers
might want to check the odds - just in case.
The
Era Of Fictitious Capitalism - When
'real value' Is No Longer What Seems To Matter...You Can Be Sure It Matters
More Than Ever...~ By Addison Wiggin - The short answer is, of course,
the wine is cheap and the woman are...um, elegant. The long answer is,
we gain perspective. It’s the long answer, because it requires an explanation.
One could gain perspective from just about anywhere, of course...but why
not do it in a place where the wine is cheap and the women pleasing to
look at?
In
Cambodia - Politics,
People And The Enviroment ~ by Evan Weinberger - The truth, of course,
was far different. As with all of the journalists in Cambodia covering
the country’s third national election, I wanted the elections to go off
smoothly and for the country to continue on with its march to democracy.
But like most journalists in Cambodia, I didn’t think this was going to
happen.
A
Tale Of Two Asian Expat Havens -One
Exotic And Inexpensive, The Other Sophisticated And A Leading Financial
Center ~ by Mark Nestmann - The only country in Southeast Asia that
was never conquered by Europeans, Thais don’t generally have the anti-western
attitudes that prevail in some other Asian countries. And Thailand, with
its overwhelmingly homogenous Buddhist population, has suffered little
of the ethnic, racial and religious strife that plagues many countries
in the region.

Water:
A Resource For Life - The
International Water Festival In Panama ~ Zvia Leibler-Danon - We take
the supply of water for granted, and have been doing so for a long time.
But now at the beginning of the third millennium it is critical, especially
with regard to the inequities in water distribution in the Latin American
and Caribbean region, that we change the way we manage water. We have to
become better informed and share our experiences about the present water
crisis. Above all, we have an obligation to preserve this resource and
ensure that we transmit the knowledge needed for its management to our
children - our future water consumers and environmental decision-makers.

Northeastern
India -Destination:
Shillong ~ by Rajdeep Bhattacharjee - The northeastern region of the
Indian subcontinent is a remote and one of the most beautiful locations,
which is yet to be explored. As communications being improved in recent
times, the region is very fast turning out to be a Traveler’s Paradise
with more and more tourists flowing in to explore the virgin landscape
and amazing tribal culture.
A
Long Way From Munster To Colima - Travel
And The Self ~ by Juergen Klemann - There have been a few people who
have shaped and influenced my values and convictions in the course of time.
Some of these people have shaped and influenced me when I was an adolescent.
Some of them have shaped and influenced me when I was already an adult.
The first person who fits the bill in this respect was my English teacher
at preparatory school. His name is Dietrich Buff. Unlike my other teachers,
he had not spent all his life as a teacher in Germany. Instead, he had
lived for quite a bunch of years in the United States. That made him stand
out of the crowd.
The
Trans-Siberian Railway -The
Ultimate Rail Journey ~ by Matt Scott - The Trans-Siberian Railway
is the ultimate rail journey, the longest in the world, possibly the coldest
if you go at the wrong time of year and the only journey that travels in
two continents in a single journey, while staying in the same country.
Without leaving your seat you can clatter your way along almost a third
of the globe; the Trans Siberian is a journey of almost mythical proportions.

The
Caribbean On Canvas - Artists
Of The Caribbean ~ by Maxine Schur - I’m in love with Caribbean art.
I was hooked when I saw my first exhibit of Haitian painting. What
I saw was primitive but so enchanting. Naively, I thought all Caribbean
art was naïve. Years later when I vacationed in the Dominican
Republic I got a surprise. Though sharing the island of Hispaniola with
Haiti, the Dominican Republic produces a markedly different art: sophisticated
and European. |
.
The
Country Of Eternal Spring - Guatemala
~ by Dawnelle Salant - Guatemala. Another of the world’s undiscovered gems,
waiting to be shaped and shined by adventure seeking travelers. Landing
in Guatemala City is rather unremarkable, and spending more than a day
in the urban center is unnecessary. The city, which is divided into fifteen
zones, does have several sights worth seeing. The Mercado Central, located
in Zona 1, boasts arts and handicrafts that make wonderful souvenirs and
gifts. In Zona 10, Museo Ixchel displays the richly colored traditional
clothing, arts and costumes of Guatemala’s people.
Adventure
Vacation In Bulgaria - The
Natural Beauty Of Bulgaria ~ by Petya Milkova - Bulgaria is a popular
destination for sea and ski holidays. But the country has also other charming
places yet to be discovered. These are the numerous mountains, plains,
rivers, villages and many more. Here you can practice many outdoor activities.
Among the well developed are trekking and hiking, horse back riding, bird
watching, etc. Other practiced activities are: caving, paragliding, mountain-biking,
rafting and kayaking, photography tours, botany, etc.
Temple
De La Sagrada Familia - In
Barcelona ~ by Shirleyann Costigan - I came to Barcelona to see Gaudi's
masterpiece, the Temple de la Sagrada Família. However, when I discovered
that six of my travel group wanted to see Parc Guëll I decided to
visit the Parc with them before going my separate way. At the Tourist Office
located in the Plaça de Catalunya it is possible to purchase a bus
pass that offers two different sightseeing routes around the city, both
on the same pass. Passengers can get off at any stop and catch the next
red or blue bus that comes by every 20 minutes or so, but because the stop-and-go
ride to the Parc would take 45 minutes, we opted to take the Metro directly
to Parc Guëll station. That was a mistake.
