a quick drive of Altos are a wide range of activities and resources.
Some
of Panama's best known beaches are only 30 minutes away from Altos del
Maria: Punta Chame, Gorgona, Coronado and Punta Barco. In Coronado,
there is a championship 18 holes Golf course, Par 72, with 7,092 yards
of "greens" and "fairways" designed by Tom & George Fazio. It is considered
one of the finest in all Latin America.
Also, in Coronado, 19 km. (12 miles)
away, along the Pan-American Highway, there are supermarkets, restaurants,
gas stations, handicraft markets, hardware stores and more. In the city
of La Chorrera, the area's largest settlement, residents of Altos del Maria
will find shopping centers, sport facilities, cinemas, restaurants and
supermarkets. The town is approximately an hour's drive from the project.
Near the entrance to Altos is a mini-market
that has goods similar to what one would find in a 711 store. There is
also a police station near the entrance with police on duty 24 hours a
day. |

Altos del Maria is the habitat of
the Harpy Eagle, Tody Mot Mot, Dull-mantled Antbird, Eye-ringed Flatbill,
Buff-throated Saltator, White-tipped Sicklebill, Green Hermit, Sunbittern,
Bay-headed and Emerald tanagers, deer, sloths, monkeys, mammals and golden
frogs. (The Golden Frog (Atelopus zeteki) is an endangered species found
on the mountains adjacent to Altos del María. Pre-Colombian indigenous
peoples of the distant past revered the frog and crafted gold and clay
talismans (huacas) in its form. Local legend holds that chieftains of the
Guaymí tribe would ascend the Pacific slope to the mountains of
Picacho, Gaital, Pajita, and Caracoral (in El Valle de Antón) annually
as a sacred rite. This legend evolved into the myth that the Golden Frog
would transform into gold huacas upon death. Hence, anyone seeing or possessing
the frog alive would be guaranteed good fortune.)
