Our new editor, beginning with this issue, is Matt Atlee. Well suited to take on the job of editing our magazine, Matt earned his degree outside of the USA and has continued to live outside of the USA for over a decade. Matt grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania on the western coast of Lancaster County. He studied Politics in Dover, Delaware as well as York, England and Stirling, Scotland. He moved to Panama in 1995 to work for two years in rural development. Since 1999, he has been a professor of Latin American Studies and International Affairs at the Republic of Panama branch of Florida State University in Panama City. .
Matt's youthful good looks belie the committed intellectual quality of the man. He is first and foremost a serious scholar with a comprehension of the world. He is the type of professor who brings to the classroom the enthusiasm of a true believer, especially in International Affairs. He is a committed individual with the goal of conveying something of value to his students. In a world where too many teachers are concerned with doing only enough not to get fired, Matt teaches because of his love of knowledge. He cares. Jean-Paul Sartre showed us that bad faith consists of the willingly pretending something is true even when it is clear that it is false. Sartre also made it plain that we have no excuses, that we each of us are responsible for ourselves and our actions. Matt is a man who lives by those principals. He avoids pretense, he doesn't make excuses and he goes to great length to insure that his actions always move towards making the world a better place then he found it. Most admirable to me, is that he never quits learning. He lives in an apartment strewn with books. Books piled on dressers, coffee tables, stacked on the floor and cascading out of countless bookcases. If you are a person who judges others by the books that they read and by the thinking that they do, then I can assure you that Matt meets the highest standards. He and his fiancee travel frequently to remote areas of Panama and Costa Rica where he increases his understanding of indigenous peoples, of latin America and of rural development. We feel lucky to add him to our staff. Matt intends to bring a more precise focus on international lifestyles to our magazine with an emphasis on quality articles that contain useful and useable content.
