Living Overseas
Robin Sparks In Bali - Looking At The Expat Scene In Bali - I move into a house in the midst of the rice paddies above the old artist village of Bali called Penestanan. It is like moving into a zoo, so full of creatures that I must wear earplugs at night to sleep. The house is a large traditional Balinese home open to the outdoors complete with a lush garden and lotus pond stocked with fat goldfish. Like most homes in Bali, it comes with a "helper" or pembante. The cost of my magnificent home in paradise? One million five hundred rupiahs, which at this writing equals about $175 a month.
Dalmatia ~ Croatia's Adriatic Riviera - Dalmatian Coast - John Hurd is a former aerospace manager and an amateur writer, painter, poet.  Today, he and his wife live on the Dalmatian Coast. John writes, "You can feel it in the air, in the shining white yachts visiting the Adriatic harbors, in the industrious village renovations by the local people, in the sheer number and richness of the websites: something big is about to happen.  There’s a feeling of widening awareness, rippling out from this narrow band of Europeans.  This year, the beauty and timelessness of the islands got top story headlines in the New York Times. The region is on the verge of a market explosion."

Mazatlan, Mexico ~ Almost Forgotten but Never Gone - Mazatlan, Mexico - Art Jones is a normal kind of guy who spent most of his adult life in Alaska, first building, then maintaining the Trans Alaska Pipeline.  In the 90s, he took early retirement and headed south to warmer climates, looking for a place to settle.  After Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize, and much of Mexico, he found Mazatlan.  For decades, Mazatlan has been a favorite place for expats.  According to Art, however, Mazatlan is ready to be discovered, again.
Successful Living in Malaysia ~ Being a Student of Life - Kuala Lumpur - Caroline Couronne tries to show the country to expatriates the way a local would see it. She writes, "You should remember not to order pork and alcoholic drinks when eating with Muslims, not to help yourself with Chinese Tea while forgetting to serve other table members, not to offer a welcome hug to your guests but instead a soft and polite handshake. Knowing the basic rules is crucial, when you happily poured soy sauce on a special home made fish dish, your host will simply not re-iterate invitations."

Cultural Attitudes Towards Learning ~ The People's Republic of China - Childhood Education - Eva Lynne is an ESL teacher in the Peoples Republic of China. She writes, "Education is a precious privilege, and a keen recognition of this is ever so evident in China. In China, it is said that the three most important persons in your life are: your mother because she gave you birth; your father because he guides your upbringing and prosperity; and your teacher because a teacher nurtures your mind. Education in China is viewed as a life-long process. Throughout life, the quest for knowledge and the desire to better one's mind is fervent."

Unique Travel
Squid Island ~ Ullungdo, South Korea - Squid Island - Richard S. Ehrlich is from San Francisco, California, and first journeyed to Asia in 1972. Ehrlich writes, "At night, Islanders tie undried squids to indoor racks. Down by the seashore, fishermen's trash buckets are filled with discarded squids' eyes, but the rest of the slippery animals are carefully gutted. They have turned isolated, middle-of-nowhere Ullungdo into a boomtown with tentacles. The island offers moody, inspiring, rocky hills and a seemingly hostile coastline."

Investing, Business & Real Estate
The Case Against Cuba Sanctions ~ Latin Business Chronicle - Cuba Tourism - Philip Peters is a vice president of the Lexington Institute. Peters writes, "On the eve of Congressional consideration of amendments affecting U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba, the State Department has released a 20-page "white paper" to bolster its point of view.  The paper may well reveal the Administration's real reason for wanting to deny Americans the right to travel freely to Cuba: it does not want Americans to see how distorted is their own government's presentation of Cuban reality.
Compassionate Communism in SE Asia ~ CC = InE (Cq<D) + (ciCcl) - Investing in SE Asia - Eric Vogt was recently in SE Asia and saw a new kind of communism, one more tailored to 21st century globalism. Eric write's, "In layman’s terms Compassionate Communism (CC) comes into existence when the Ironic non-Existence coefficient (InE) is multiplied by the Compassion quotient (Cq<D), which increases in direct proportion to the amount of hard currency potentially available.  Compassionate Communism results when these are combined with the capitalists in communist clothes factor (ciCcl)."

Commentary
Mapping the Future ~ A Book ReviewHuman Geography - Julie Kane of the College of Architecture & Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, reviews "Places and Regions in Global Context" by Knox and Marston.  “Overall, Knox believes, the world economic forecast is good. However, today’s developing countries will account for more than half of the world energy consumption, the development of three specific technologies is crucial for future economic development, and governments will be locked into their 19th-century quilt of territories and institutions.
