| This
page consists of a brief but colorful history of the Las Perlas Islands
and a note about the Republic of Panama economy, today. Also, you'll find
that tour package has been created by the Kingfisher Bay Island Estates
& Marina. The tour will help you to get to know the project better
and know Panama, a location International Living ranks as the best expat
haven in the world. Lastly, I've included an important word about the visionaries
of the Kingfisher Bay Island Estates & Marina.
The History
and Lore of Las Perlas
The dominating
central island of Isla del Rey, formerly known as Isla de Las Flores, is
the largest of the islands in the Las Perlas Archipelago. More than 220
islands, |
|
some of which
are not as yet named, surround Isla del Rey. This region is full of history.
These were the first islands in the American Pacific visited by the Spanish
Conquerors of the New World in the 16th century, including Vasco Núñez
de Balboa, who discovered the Pacific Ocean.
| In
1513, the Spaniards found indigenous people diving to get beautiful pearls,
and thus the archipelago got its name. The famous pearls of the ceremonial
crown of the Queen of England were found here. The pearls of Islas de las
Perlas
were still being sent to jewelers in Paris at the beginning of the 20th
century. These indigenous people told Vasco Núñez de Balboa
about Peru and the vast wealth it held. Small colonial towns in this region
include Pedro González, and Contadora, located on the island of
the same name.
During the
16th century, the Las Perlas were the defenders of the trans-Isthmian route
of treasures from Peru. This place also became a frequent route for privateers
and pirates that attacked ships leaving the Panamanian ports of Taboga
and Naos, before these ships could |
|
reach the wide
Pacific. Some of the 16th, 17th and 18th century pirates that used this
route included Mansvelt, Dampier, the feared L’Olonnois, Sir Francis Drake,
and Henry Morgan.
In more modern
times, the Las Perlas Islands became a strategic location for the defense
of the Panama Canal during WWII. As well, Contadora , became the
meeting place for famous personalities, such as the last Shah of Iran (who
lived here during part of his exile) and former US president Jimmy Carter,
a frequent visitor. It is rumored that the infamous Panama Red of the 1960s
and 70s came from the Las Perlas Islands.

City and the Republic of Panama
One of the
more attractive things about living in Panama is the fact that the country
borders two oceans. Anyone with a hankering could breakfast at the
Caesar Palace overlooking the Bay of Panama, make a leisurely drive north
and have lunch on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, and easily return by
sundown to dine at the Miramar. Panama, the isthmus of the Americas,
is a water born country.
Panama City
is one of Central America’s most modern cities, with luxury hotels, fine
restaurants, and a very cosmopolitan nightlife. |
|
Panama City is
also the banking center for Central and South America, including the Caribbean.
Further benefits of Panama: Currency being the US$, the time zone which
varies from EST to CST (according to US daylight savings time), and a majority
of Panama’s work force is bilingual (Spanish and English).
The Pacific
coast of Panama has a tropical climate that is free from natural disaster;
there are no hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes or volcanoes, making the
location diving to look for collectibles from Spanish Galleons that were
laden with treasure a delightfully safe experience.

| Panama is
the most globalized country in Latin America, while Peru is the least,
according to the latest Globalization Index compiled by A.T. Kearney and
Foreign Policy magazine.
As well, according
to the latest Capital Access Index compiled by the Milken Institute, Panama
ranks second only to Chile as the best place in Latin America to access
capital. Its score of 4.19 out of a possible 5 points gives it a rank of
34 worldwide of the countries under study, ahead of countries like China,
Poland and Egypt. In three sub categories - macro-economic environment,
banking governance and advanced capital markets, Panama actually scored
higher than Chile. |
