is very dull. To doubt is intensely engrossing. To be on the alert is to
live, to be lulled into security is to die." - - Oscar

Kathmandu,
Nepal - Expat Haven Or Paradise Lost? Part One - Photos
& Essay by Robin Sparks Reporting on the Expat scene in Kathmandu
- I've been to plenty of third world countries, but nothing prepared me
for Kathmandu. Many of those who went in the 60's and 70's, stayed put
in Kathmandu's mystical mountain-bowl setting. There was the legality of
hashish (now illegal), the incredulously low cost of living (one can live
on as little as $500 a month in a palatial home with servants), spiritual
mysticism, a welcome attitude towards foreigners, and the quaint, innocent
ambience of a country that was until the early 50s shut off from the rest
of the world. |

Is
It Time To Get Out Of Dodge City? - Immigration
and citizenship strategies for Americans - in a post-September
11th world - Current U.S. government policy states that an individual who
is becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen is not required to renounce their
existing citizenship. Furthermore, an American citizen who is becoming
naturalized in a foreign state does not automatically lose their U.S. citizenship.
You can use the foreign naturalization as a method of relinquishing U.S.
citizenship (as part of a tax expatriation plan), but this must be done
very carefully and with an overwhelming demonstration of the intent to
lose American citizenship. This has not always been the American government's
position, so prior presumed or proven loss of foreign or U.S. citizenship
must be re-examined in light of this current policy.

Practicalities and Idiosyncrasies of Life in Madrid - When
you come to live in Madrid - the burden of cultural adjustment will
be upon YOU and there will be significant changes to which you will have
to adjust. Spain is a western country with attitudes, habits, and
a standard of living that is broadly speaking, the same as in Britain and
the US. This doesn't mean that you won't need time to get used to the sights,
sounds, tastes and smells of your new surroundings, though.

Avria on the Island of Rhodes ~ Learning to Go with the Flow ~ Bureaucracy
can be annoying. In Greece, they have raised it to an art form
- Greek bureaucracy
- It will be sunny tomorrow on the Island of Rhodes. Great weather.
Rhodes has over 300 days of sunshine per year. You want friendly
people, reasonable prices, affordable housing, easy access, good health
care, and minimum bureaucracy. "Rhodes has all of these except the
last," says Ron Ferguson who lived there for seven
years.

Earn
an American or British degree in the Land of Smiles, Thailand ~ Exactly
the same degree that could be earned in the USA or England -
Higher
Education Overseas - Scott A. Hipsher
is an English teacher in Bankok Thailand. He earned his BS degree from
the University of Maryland (Asian Division, Sasebo Japan) and his MBA from
Bangkok University. He writes, "Many North Americans and Europeans
will automatically assume that any degree earned outside the USA, especially
in a developing country, is inferior to a degree in their home country.
But it is possible to eliminate that problem and to earn a USA or British
degree abroad, which is exactly the same degree that could be earned in
the USA or England.

Amazing
Tram Travel ~ Riding the Bucharest Maze -
Traveling
by Tram - Chuck Todaro travels by motorcycle except when in
Bucharest, Romania. Chuck writes, "As far as I am concerned there
is really only one true way of getting around Bucharest - and here it comes!
Breaking through all the kinetic friction rolls a lean, mean, caterpillar
shaped monster. Turning over its heavy steel wheels this 100 foot long
half train - half bus contraption cuts through the traffic like the tunnel
boring machines cut through mountains. They call it the Bucharest
Tram."

World, One Love, No Ice ~ Sprained in Berlin's Love Parade - The
Love Parade - Keith O'Brien was backpacking through Europe when he
first got the news of the upcomping Belin Love Parade. After 12 countries
in seven weeks, Keith thought his whirlwind travel would pick up in this
12-hour
EU outdoor rave. The whirlwind subsided to an air cast for a badly sprained
ankle, but Keith didn't let that stop him. Party on.Berlin’s Love Parade
can be more dangerous than the running of the bulls in Pamplona.

Burning Candles, Big Vats of Thick Green Stuff - Gonzo
Travelogues - Gonzo Travelogue writer John Torrente visits a
natural healer in Mexico. Before the good doctor pulls the sheet
up over John's head, John writes, "Watching the spider crawl across the
ceiling was the first indication I should have grabbed my clothes, prayed
reverently to the God Of Hot Dripping Wax and gone home to find solace
with a dry tortilla and several hours of Zamfir - Master of the Pan Flute.
Instead, I lie there in my shiny-white-skin glory, wearing pin-stripe boxer
shorts and calf-length black socks. Pulled up to my knees."

hope of getting lucky. You cannot, therefore, "invest" in mining stocks;
it is only possible to speculate in them."
Panama
Ranks High in Latin American Capital Access ~ In three subcategories, Panama
scored higher than Chile - Investing
in Panama - Panama made a splashing debut as the second-best place
in Latin America for capital access in the latest Capital Access Global
Index compiled by the Milken Institute. In three subcategories - macro-economic
environment, banking governance and advanced capital markets, Panama actually
scored higher than Chile. Thanks largely to only using the U.S. dollar
during its entire 99-year history, Panama has been able to maintain one
of the lowest inflation rates in Latin America and one that often has been
lower than that of the United States itself.
