"The cycle swings into each curve effortlessly, banking so that our weight is always down through the machine no matter what its angle is with the ground. The way is full of flowers and surprise views, tight turns one after another so that the whole world rolls and pirouettes and rises and falls away."  - -  Robert M. Persig - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Gonzo Travel Memoirs from Beyond ~ Escape from America Magazine has added a new column to its online webzine and monthly ezine. Travel memoirs were never like this. John Torrente has taken them beyond the limits of sanity. Move over Hunter, fear and loathing was never this good. Sometimes reflective but always humorous, these travel memoirs will make you wonder "Fact or Fiction," but they're all True. They may scare the boots off the novice, but they're sure to bring back vivid memories of many a vagabond youth and open the doors of everyone's transendental imagination.
Roger Gallo Reports that he just received an eMail from one of our most popular writers, Robin Sparks, who has recently been living in Kathmandu.  She says that she has loads of good photos and enough anecdotes to write a book on Kathmandu alone. We've asked her to write an article for the next edition of the Zine on Kathmandu and she has agreed. Something to very much look forward to.  Robin was an early EFAM contributor and her work is sensational.

Living Overseas
Expat life in Macedonia ~ Some Have Found a Way to Live and Even Thrive - Macedonia Today - Chris Deliso is a frequent contributor to Escape from America Magazine. Until recently his stories for EFAM have concentrated on out-of-the-way travel articles, about pleasant places like the Greek Isles and Ireland. This article takes the slant of investigative reporting. Macedonia has been the site for civil upheaval. Chris traveled to Macedonia to find out how Expat Life is. Although not yet entirely able to rebound from the recent war, Macedonia still is home to expats who have fallen in love with the beauty that still survives. The article provides abundant resource links good for keeping pace with changes underway.

Six Months in Bangkok ~ Sights, Sounds, and Smells Overwhelmingly Foreign to the Western European - Living in Bangkok - Wonder Russell is living for six months in a country where anything is possible, from the sublime to the deranged. She predicts it will change her life.  She writes, “The narrow, blackened sidewalks with their treacherous cracks and crumbles uphold a teeming cultural soup. Beggars without legs hold a cup over their heads, hands pressed together in an attitude of humility or prayer. Occasionally, some beach-reddened Westerners —farang— fumble for loose baht to toss into the cup, but most, taken unawares by the maimed and ragged half-horror just hurry by.  Six months stretched between West and East, the Pacific and the Indian oceans, between the heaven of the hotels and spas and the hell of the poverty. It’s an adventure, and that’s what we live for.”

Dream State Of A Waking Noctambulist ~ Helpful Hints to the Aspiring Traveler - Gonzo Travelogues - 17 Mar 2002 marked a year on-the-road for John Torrente, first writing in Spain, then volunteering in Mexico, then traveling across Central America, then studying photography in  Ecuador.  When last he wrote to Escape from America Magazine, it was 3am in the Jacksonville, Florida, Greyhound Bus Station; he was trying to get back to his destroyed New York neighborhood to cry a little bit and to recharge his batteries. His first book is titled, “How To Sell Your Futon, Shelf Your Master’s Degree, Drop Your Corporate Copywriting Job And Flourish As A Hippy-Freak-Wannabe Living In Rural Latin American Pueblos So Long As You Don’t Mind Filling The Toilet Basin With Water Every Time You Go." He’s been advised by concerned friends and family to visit his organic farmer brother in Oregon for some R&R.

Commentary
Netherlands Castle Dweller ~ Becoming More a Part of the World - Living in A Castle - The philosopher Pascal once said that much if not all of what we do in life is done so we can tell others of our great accomplishment and adventure, rather than for the sheer joy of the experience itself. I think the stories we tell one another, the experiences we cherish and share, bring life to relationships and allow people to learn from one another. One of most appealing and enduring aspects of travel, particularly travel though a foreign country, is the way it fills you out as an individual, gives you a broader range of knowledge and experience on which to build a sense of self and place. This heightened sense gotten by paying attention to what other people make of life allows us to augment and alter our views on life here at home in the United States.
