This guide is well constructed and easy to use; read the phrases phonetically and you will find that you are understood. “If you read it as it is on the page (read English words as you would in English), a Thai person should understand in context.” The author also includes the Thai spelling and characters so that you can start to recognize the written language as well. There are little snippets of information which will help you to understand the local culture better, and ensure that you don’t offend:- “Never speak badly about the royal family or religion.” “”Nudity (including going topless on the beaches) is offensive to the Thai people and even against the law in some places.” “Street food, although not looking particularly clean, offers a real look at Thailand.” James Ann also covers some basics…hotels, food, shopping, transport, climate and there are phrases, along with easy to decipher diagrams, to cover most eventualities. Even if you don’t learn the language by heart, you will have some fun and the Thais themselves will appreciate you having a go. Don’t be shy…trying never hurt anyone! |
