I wrote this book with two objectives in mind.
First and foremost, I wanted to provide useful information to those who may find themselves in a similar situation, whether moving to or just visiting Australia. While I was able to locate a number of different books about Australia, none of them was “the” book I was looking for.
Some of the books offered too much information and were very academic, really kind of boring, reads. Others were very entertaining but didn’t provide much useful content. In All Over the Place Like a Mad Woman’s Breakfast I believe I have compiled the best information from all of my research and personal experiences. The kind of information that your average person or family will need to prepare themselves for what can otherwise be a daunting endeavor. There is an honest accounting of the costs you can expect to have.
Second, I didn’t want this book to be a boring list of what to do and what not to do. My goal was to produce a book that could be enjoyed by those who may never even have the opportunity visit Australia, but may have an interest in the country or history or simply in the comical adventures of others.
“All Over the Place Like a Mad Woman’s Breakfast” is Aussie slang for something that is scattered, messy or a bit haphazard. I’ve titled the book as such, because in some ways it is descriptive of my writing style. Not to say that it is a hastily thrown together pile of informational snippets, but rather that the book is written in such a way as it takes you through our adventure in a chronological format. As certain aspects of the moving process or the history of Australia or a place of interest are touched upon, I expand on that information. This keeps the book flowing in a much more enjoyable way.
I am very pleased with the end product and I am sure you will be, as well. Here are a few reader responses that I have received to date:
I came across your article while perusing the "Escape Artist" website for the first time. My wife is Australian and we are going to be moving there in a couple of months on our own. I enjoyed your article and found it helpful as I formulate our plan. Thanks - Ed Kopkas (Seattle, WA), Nice job Mike, if I ever make a trip to the "down under" I know where to go to get the info needed. – Robert Berryhill (Bellville, MI).
Michael,
Just finished reading your book. Thanks for providing a succinct and well written guide to help those thinking about moving to Australia. It was a very easy read, and both my wife and I enjoyed your casual and fun writing style. I found your insight about costs for moving and daily life, and how you assimilated into Australian life, very useful. This has been a topic for me and my wife for years.....
...thanks again for the well written, fun, and informative read. Your insight will indeed factor in to our decision…if we ever make one. - The Rosen Family (San Diego, CA). |
