Sea Gypsies of Burma - The Moken belong to no country, carry
no identification papers, and speak their own language. With no official
count, locals estimate that 1,000 Moken live a traditional life on Burmese
waters. During their seven-month stretch at sea, the gypsies drift in groups
of at least six boats, each vessel housing one family, usually of three
generations.

Through Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, - The indigenous of
the Xalapa-Veracruz area practice a death defying custom of swinging off
tall poles... up-side-down from ropes tied to their feet. Not exactly sure
how this ties in with anything Christian, but... they do it on Sunday...
from a 50-60 foot pole set in front of the cathedral doors. In full costume,
five guys start by climbing boards roughly nailed to the tall pole... that
alone defies death if you’ve seen Mexican carpentry.

- The tourist makes his choices within a minimally regulated framework
worldwide, but if tourists collectively generate between 3.6 and 10.3 per
cent of the world’s GDP, they constitute the world’s largest and most powerful
consumer collective. If many economies are dependent upon tourist revenue,
the tourist is in a position to demand the very best for him and the planet
in general. If you think about it, it’s dead easy. We could transform the
entire planet while on holiday. Already some very interesting projects
are underway.

TBD - At one point during our drive to Jiuzhaigou, I looked up
to find a whole new scene outside of the window. Long haired white yaks
with brightly colored pompoms and other decorations stood on the side of
the road with 'hill people', Tibetan jewelry and souvenir stands. There
was a mist in the air which had become chilly in the high altitude. Little
girls walked through the streets of villages with rosy, pink cheeks from
the drizzle and cold. The hills and land: bright shades of green -- steep,
straight, flat. Black, craggy mountains with snowy crowns looked like they
were glowing as the gray sky opened up just above their peaks to white
heaven.

a Hospital in Rural Argentina - On the gurney en-route to the operating
room, I scribbled down the phone numbers of my best friend and my children
in California, and handed it off to Annette with instructions to call them
right away. I thought about how it was going to sound to them – a stranger
they could barely understand calling to tell them their friend/mother had
gone into emergency surgery in a foreign country.
