Colombia,
Land of Dreams? Colombia doesn't top most people's list
of vacation spots. With Amazon jungle, forest-covered mountains, beautiful
women and Caribbean beaches it probably would be, except for the civil
war that's been tearing the country apart for 50 years. Despite the travel
warnings issued by many governments Colombia can safely be visited and
lived in providing you follow certain guidelines. Colombians are very proud
of their country and with good reason. The people are educated and so full
of life that the country is affectionately known as 'Loco'-mbia.

was sitting on a rock beneath the cooling waters of the Yaguey waterfall
when all at once Pedro, a local farmer, yelled out "Vamos! Vamos!" The
urgent tone in his voice told me he was serious, and I swim out from under
the falls to the rocky shore as fast as I can. Looking behind me as I clambered
out of the river, I saw what Pedro was concerned about: a huge brown wall
of water, high, wide and powerful, roared over the waterfall, one of five
that tumble down one after the other on the Yaguey River in this unknown
and seldom-visited area 20 kilometers up in the mountains off the southwestern
coast of Cuba.

we leave one world for the indefinite world so those you leave behind may
remember you. Likewise when you travel from a place where's you've lived,

Over Rio - One
morning while strolling to Praia (Beach) do Pepino in Rio de Janeiro, I
looked up to see colorful wings circling in the sky. Under the two
delta-shaped wings, two people strapped side by side, drifted down,
down and then their feet hit the grass running. Within a few meters, they
slowed to a fast walk coming to a stop as the kite tilted, stopping
on the ground.

up about 1:30am and stuck my head out the tent at our base camp. We pitched
it inside a waist-high crescent of rocks left by previous climbers. The
rocks would block the wind on this exposed point, but the night air was
almost still. At 6500 feet, the stars come out big. The Milky Way splatters
across the night sky like a stripe of white spray paint. So clear.

flavors: the classic Harley/Gold Wing big-butt road riders; the leather-clad,

and dangerous, but the choice is ultimately yours. There is a law of diminishing

ears are wide shut? Because I have to believe that knowledge changes minds
and hearts, far slower than I’d like, but still, there is hope...

We were fortunate to find a guesthouse in Lijiang that was run by the friendliest
Chinese couple in the country, and likewise full of the friendliest Chinese
tourists. We were immediately invited to join them for dinner our first
night, and it became something of a ritual for the rest of our stay there.
I have never experienced generosity to the degree that I have in China...
we were always invited, and never asked to pay.
