The one common experience of all humanity is the challenge of problems -- R. Buckminster Fuller
Freighter Travel - - The ambiance is different, the pace is relaxed.  You're not surrounded by jitterbug tourists, you're meeting interesting people in an informal setting. You're destinations are not on the itinerary of the standard cruise ships. You are taking a trip and a vacation that is as unique and memorable as any that it is possible to take. Traveling by freighter is not for the ordinary. The ordinary is simply that...  ordinary.  Traveling by freighter recalls the world of Graham Greene, Paul Bowles and Joseph Conrad. It's almost decadent in the pleasure it provides.  It's damn exotic  ...do it.  Note: We've even got an ebook on How to Get a Job on a Luxury Cruise Ship - another on Yachting Careers - and a third on Living Aboard and Cruising under Power or Sail  - We don't yet have one on  Freighter Travel, but if you know the subject, we're interested in your article, or even an ebook on the subject -  We want your Freighter Travel Article or eBook - We're interested in your freighter travel article or eBook - If you've got a freighter travel article tell us about it - EscapeArtist.com publishes up to eighty new articles per month.  In addition to articles, we publish Books, eBooks and special reports.  We are actively seeking articles, eBook manuscripts and reports.  We're interested in your freighter travel article or other article eBook proposals - Contact us with your article proposal -
Captain McDonnell's Sea Stories : Stories About Freighters - Recommended Website -- "After retiring as a Captain for Lykes Lines back in 1995 I was encouraged to write down some of my sea stories by an internet friend, Dick Ahren, also known as "freighterman" after creating a web site he called "The Internet Guide to Freighter Travel". It was an informative and useful source of information for prospective passengers who wished to travel by freighters, or ships other than cruise and passenger ships. Dick agreed to host my "Captain's Page" as part of his web site. However in recent months this resource seems to no longer be available, at least in its original form, so I have decided to do it on my own."
Travel By Freighter Continent to Continent On A Freighter - One way to travel around the world, especially if you are afraid of planes, would be by catching a ride on a freighter ship. The above article talks with some people who have traveled around the world without leaving the water or ground.
Freighter Travel - Philadelphia to Sydney, Australia - 40 Days and 40 Nights Aboard The Melbourne Star - There are four container ships employed in the Blue Star service from the U.S. east coast to New Zealand and Australia. The round trip itinerary normally embarks at Savannah with the voyage ending in Philadelphia upon the return. Early embarkation at Philadelphia or Norfolk and late disembarkation at Norfolk, Savannah or Houston can often be arranged-space permitting-for moderate additional fare.
Wandering the European Canals & Rivers - We eventually approached Paris from the west and made our way up the River Seine past the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, under countless bridges, amidst heavy barge traffic to the marina at the Bastille. The trip from Amsterdam to Paris had taken us just under 7 weeks of leisure travel. The Bastille marina has a convenient location in the heart of Paris and costs about $US28/day. After a two week stay in Paris, my daughter & girlfriend left for the States. I continued on south for more than another month finally arriving the end of Sept. at a marina in the village of St. Jean de Losne, just south of Dijon.
Wandering the Canals & Rivers of Europe - I flew into Paris from Seattle by way of Toronto on an Air Canada flight. Not only did Air Canada have the cheapest fare but they allowed me to bring my bicycle as part of my baggage allowance at no additional cost.  It was quite a struggle lugging my bags and the bicycle from the airport into downtown Paris to catch the metro and then the train for my trip to Dijon. From Dijon I had to catch a commuter train for a 40 min ride to the village of St. Jean de Losne, located at the confluence of the River Saone and the Bourgogne canal, where I had left the boat in a marina for the winter.
Line Handling on the Panama Canal - Cruising yachts and pleasure craft are crossing the Isthmus of the Americas in record numbers.  The Autoridad del Canal de Panama requires four line handlers per vessel up to 80 feet in overall length.  You can be one of those line handlers, go from one ocean to another in twelve hours, see the Panama Canal like few people do and make easy money doing it. Vessels that transit the Panama Canal are always headed to another port-of-call.  On the Pacific side, there is the Galapagos ...
And Now for Something Completely Different... Freedom Ship  - The World’s Biggest Ship—The World’s Newest Tax Haven? - Mark Nestmann analyzes Freedom Ship's potential as a tax haven. Freedom Ship International, Inc. (FSI ) plans to offer the opportunity for an unprecedented lifestyle by constructing a sea-based, mobile, full-spectrum residential, commercial, and resort community on a mammoth, mobile, sea platform. The community will travel the entire globe over a two-year cycle, never leaving international waters. It will spend only 30% of its time in transit and the other 70% standing offshore points of interest. A fleet of aircraft and watercraft will ferry people from ship-to-shore, around-the-clock, residents for touring and business, and as many as 30,000 onshore guests and visitors daily. What is it's potential as a tax haven?
The Bahamas by Mailboat… - Few people who visit the Bahamas ever hear of Potter’s Cay, though many pass within a few yards of it each time that they are whisked off Paradise Island in one of those ridiculous white stretch limos that are so popular in Nassau. Where Paradise Island is fabricated Caribbean perfection — massive casino, glitz and high-rise hotels — Potter’s Cay is its alter-ego, a shabby looking area of working docks beneath the bridge. Potter’s Quay is the main mail-boat dock that links the central Bahamian island of New Providence, where the capital Nassau is situated, to all the Out Islands, the literally hundreds of islands, ribbons of rock and sandbars spread over 100,000 square miles of the spectacularly blue Bahamian sea. After Nassau it is a reminder that real West Indian life does exist in the Bahamas after all.

Global Nomadic Housing For Expatriates ~ Part One - Global Nomadic Housing for expats?  Why not?  Design your living space & workshop and take it with you...   Maverick designer Colin Reedy tells us how.  "I felt like I had enough information to start designing.   I searched for examples of prior efforts to modify shipping containers for housing.   The companies that sold the containers sometimes made modifications like windows or doors for the contractors to use at construction sites, but nothing interesting.   I found images from Hong Kong where people were living in containers set on huge metal frames in an apartment-like arrangement.   Not much had been done to the containers except stairway access.   The best examples I found were not for shipping containers, but from mid-century efforts at modular housing or “utopian” mass housing."
