COMMENT:
Did They Die in Vain?

Yesterday was Veterans
Day in the United States, the annual honoring of those Americans who fought
and died in the many wars our country has endured in its 225 years of nationhood.
The record shows that, through the Gulf War, 1,009,200 individuals have
sacrificed their lives
for their country.
In recent weeks Afghanistan has added new names to the honor role of US
military defenders.
It is appropriate
to recall that each one of these individuals, with lives and families,
hopes and dreams, died so that we might live in freedom. But if American
liberty is eroded, destroyed from within, why did these people sacrifice
their lives? Abraham Lincoln raised this very point at the dedication of
the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Nov. 19, 1864, saying: "We here highly
resolve these dead shall not have died in vain."
The two months since
September 11th have witnessed the greatest destruction of American freedom
since the Civil War. Herd mentality legislators in Congress have stampeded
to outbid each other in fighting an ill-defined "terrorism'. For cannon
fodder politicians
have used our constitutional
rights.
US Rep. Ron Paul
(R-Texas), one of only three Republican lawmakers to vote against his party
and president by opposing the so-called "anti-terror" law, is outraged.
Based on the new law's severe
curtailment of freedoms,
Ron Paul believes the nation's Founding Fathers "would think it's time
for a new revolution. This is why they revolted in the first place."
US Sen. Russ Feingold
(D-Wisc), the only Democrat to oppose it, equated the law with the 18th
century Alien and Sedition Act and the internment of German and Japanese
Americans during World War II.
A columnist in Denver
asks: "How could Congress, even in its darkest moment of panic, eliminate
due process and put the US on par with terror states that arrest people
and throw them away without trials?" In 1816 before he became president,
John Quincy Adams wrote to his
father, John Adams,
then a former president: "May our country be always successful, but whether
successful or otherwise, always right."
In the Revolutionary
War that won our independence from England 4,435 Americans died, about
the number who suffered death in New York and Washington in the horror
of Sept. 11th. But if Americans supinely acquiesce in the death of liberty,
for fear or whatever reason, the
counter to Lincoln's
profound resolve will be sadly, "All those American patriots will have
died in vain."
