Down the Barrel of My Second Irish Winter - Settling In |
| - Lori is
the mother of two living in Dublin, Ireland, going on two years.
For Lori, the thought of settling in, planting roots in a foreign land,
starting anew in every aspect, began with apprehension. Lori's concerns
deeply reflect on the concerns shared by all people of a postmodern culture.
We're a transient people, moving on average every five years. Lori is about
to experience her second Irish winter, a prospect made more foreboding
by the strange land she's trying to settle into. But now, after a year,
she says, "All of my realizations have persuaded me to get past my
American - Expat - anthropology lovin’ cut-and-dried preconceptions and
start understanding the real Ireland." |

A Move To Fortaleza, Brazil ~ Some Advice |
| - by John
Mueller - Living somewhere is much different than visiting. You have to
learn how to survive day to day living; shopping, cooking, dealing with
the electric and phone companies, the bank, restaurants and all the other
things that come with life. Realizing this, I made a decision to try it
temporarily before actually taking the final steps. I've now been here
two months. While I won’t go into the actual differences, I have learned
many things which I will pass on. Jul/05 |

three bedrooms, two lofts, internal gardens for food growing, passion fruit

several swings inside. The kitchen looks out onto the Pacific Ocean (Moana
Nui a Kiwa) a mere 30m away and the shower/washing room, which is 4.8 by
4.8 m2, has a Jasmine plant, hops and vines and a waterfall which is active

| Moving
To Canada ~ Choosing The Right Destination |
| - by Thelma
O’ Connor - You’ve decided to move to Canada but before you go you must
choose a destination in which to settle. Canada, with over 10 million
square kilometers of territory, is the second largest country in the world,
with many wonderful cities, towns and rural communities beckoning the newcomer.
The vastness of this country makes choosing a destination all that more
difficult. Do you choose to live near the ocean, in the mountains, in a
large city, on the prairies, or in the lake regions? Suddenly, choosing
somewhere seems overwhelming! June/04 |

To Charente - Living In Rural France |
| - Above the
ground floor there were steps leading to the grenier, where thick ancient
beams held up the old tiled roof. The attic walls would need fixing. We
ducked below hanging curtains of cobwebs to check out the small finished
bedroom at the end, that lay hidden behind a rough cinderblock wall. It
was usable, with nice large arched windows. ...magnificent overhead
beams, some ancient, some newer, in every ceiling. Steps down lead to a
huge great room with fireplace, and a modest typical French kitchen at
one end. By Diana Kingham |

To The Caribbean ~ Phase 1: Research And Preparation |
| - by Mark
Lentz - Well, I’m not the first person to decide to move to the Caribbean,
and definitely won’t be the last. There probably are very few among
us that haven’t considered it after a vacation there. After all,
the Caribbean is one of the most scenic and friendly areas of the world.
For me, that feeling of being drawn there hasn’t gone away since my first
visit in 1997, and it is for that reason, among others, that has led me
to moving there to start a small business. June/04 |

Zealand ~ The Final Chapter…For Now |
| - by Rick
Adams - Packing up everything you own including that “I just can’t live
without this keepsake from the Clinton Presidential Library” and moving
to the other side of the world is a big deal. For some it’s a very big
deal. For others it’s just another stepping stone in the pathway to life’s
adventures. Whatever the case, trust me; putting the wife, kids, cats,
dogs your laptop all on a plane all at the same time and hoping for a shred
of sanity by the time you settle into your newly adopted country is, well,
wishful thinking at best. Aug./05 |

Zealand - The New Silicon Valley Suburb |
| - by Ruth
Carlson - If any place knows the next best thing, it must be Silicon Valley,
home of the computer and Internet revolution. So when I kept hearing about
South Bay residents moving to New Zealand I had to investigate. The buzz
started with my neighbor Kristi Ford, a marketing executive who said she
was giving up her career to become a yoga instructor in New Zealand. Shortly
afterwards I heard that Bardon, a winery owner, had purchased a place in
Christchurch to live in half the year. Then I toured a house on the market,
because, you guessed it, the couple was moving to New Zealand. May/05 |

| “Paint
Your Wagon” ~ Transplanted In The Islands Of Tonga |
| - by Robert
Bryce - That old musical tells the story of “moving west,” to the new frontier.
Back then it was California. Horace Greeley’s “go west” advice still stands
good, but the frontier has moved decidedly more west. These days, “Tonga
or Bust” is the new call to freedom. Folks are painting their wagons (that
would be shipping containers today) and heading to the Southern Hemisphere.
Tonga is indeed the new and perhaps last frontier. To find it, you continue
going west from California, and a little south, too. At about where you
begin to go east again, stop there. That will be the South Pacific.

Meeting Places ~ Enjoying Paris |
| - by Adrian
Leeds - Many who make the move to Paris promise themselves NOT to meet
only people of their own nationality. I was one of those who thought that
becoming Parisian meant having Parisian friends, immersing myself in the
French community, speaking French more often than English and all in all,
avoiding the American community. Quickly I discovered this wasn't necessarily
the best approach to acclimate quickly to my new home. The support I gained
from having new found friends who understood the issues and concerns I
faced entering this new culture was invaluable to a successful transition.
French friends weren't able to provide that kind of support. Oct./05 |
