There is a persistent belief that Swiss Banks and Swiss Brokers live in a higher and better world than their lowly counterpart in less precise nations. I agree with this assessment, at least for the most part.  In my dealings with Swiss Banks I've found their service to be consistently dignified and attentively personal.  It isn't an illusion.  If you're accustomed to using banks that shout your account balance across the room, give you an electric toaster for opening an account and then make you wait in endless lines to get to an impersonal service window; let me the first to inform you that the quiet and attentive dignity of Swiss service would be a big shock to you.  Bankers in Switzerland are also brokers.  If you're accustomed to stock brokers who talk too fast, give bad advice and randomly turn your personal records over to government agencies, then having a brokerage account in a Swiss bank would be like entering paradise in Porsche GT2.  There are three slight problems with having a Swiss broker; one being time zone differences, another being transaction cost and the third being the requirement that the client has to  have a Swiss bank account with a minimum balance in order to enter the playing field.  None of these factors are insurmountable obstacles.  Yes, the time zone is a bit of a drag for those who live in the Americas. Who among us wants to get up at midnight to talk to our broker?  But all in all, the excellence of service offered by the Swiss usually tends to lessen the worries about time differences and of the slightly higher transaction costs. Even a fifty thousand dollar minimum deposit to open a bank account doesn't prohibit everyone.  Though admittedly, it certainly does stop some of us.
