On Off-shore Investing Part 1 |
|
- The Escape Artist reader is a different breed; we
resonate a culture of those who have the courage and vision to be different
and follow our instincts to the other side of the world. As a contributor
to EA, I love the diversity of the magazine’s articles topics. But
with the tremendous response and questions I’ve received regarding some
recent articles I wrote on foreign real estate, I thought it was time to
submit an offshore investment primer. Have you ever watched the so-called
investment experts on CNBC? They remind me of TV sports analysts who seem
to think they always know who’s going to win and never admit when they
were wrong. |

On Offshore Investing ~ Part 2 |
| - It certainly takes a special person to be interested in
international ventures. Many, Americans in particular, have been
institutionalized since birth through uninformed societal influence and
bombastic, self-aggrandizing arrogance to believe that everything outside
the borders of the United States is tragically uncivilized, as if the rest
of the world exists in the background of a Feed the Children commercial.
Armed with inept geographical ignorance, they pass woeful judgment on what
98% of the rest of the world calls ‘home.’ |

| Where
is the Sophisticated Property Investor Putting his Money? |
|
- Putting your money into an emerging market surely has to be profitable
because by the very definition of ‘emerging’, you should assume growth,
and therefore return. EU accession is a massive catalyst to the growth
of an economy as the EU is committed to backing these countries in a bid
to creating comparable economies to those of it’s current members. Government
incentives, new political regimes and tax reforms are creating an ideal
climate for foreign direct investment, higher employment and GDP growth,
which all directly affect the property market. |

| What
To Expect When Buying Real Estate In Kiev |
| -
By Jason Jones - Kiev was the original capital of Russia but after the
Mongol invasions of the 13th century the power of the city declined and
the city was eventually controlled by the Golden Horde in Mongolia. Today
the city is the capital of Ukraine and has been restored to some of its
former glory. If you are interested in buying real estate or a home there
is a wide selection to chose from and the above article will give you some
ideas about what you should look out for when buying property in Kiev.
You should also remember that there are some beautiful towns that sit on
the edge of the Black Sea in the Crimea: these are but a short trip from
Kiev and might be a nice spot to buy a summer home to compliment your home
in Kiev. |

do your money, central banks and terrorist acts have in common? |

is a guy to do? Planning a move between countries is convoluted enough
without further complications but it seems the central bankers and terrorists
have plans to make your life as nervous as possible. However you can thwart
them. |

to Really "Escape"? Start Your Own Tax Free Small Business |
| - by
John Schroder - If it is going to be said that the location of our
web site or server is a factor, let us then 'host' our web page or server
in a location that could either care less, or offers a tax-free status
by law. Placing your web site on a server located in one of the tax
free zones in the Dominican Republic would be one idea. If the argument
is that you may have a tax liability based upon where your "office" is
located, then place your office inside one of the tax-free zones as well. |

Tax Information Exchange Agreement with Antigua and Barbuda ~ Another Tax
Haven Falls and the Poverty Gap Widens |
| - Monroe
What? - On December 6, 2001, the governments of the United States and Antigua
and Barbuda signed an agreement for the exchange of information with respect
to taxes. In effect, the Antigua and Barbuda government will now serve
as an enforcement arm of the US Internal Revenue Service, applying US tax
law to US citizens with business there. The agreement will also restrict
the economic growth of that tiny island nation. Is it a blueprint for the
future of tax havens and some developing countries? |

| Ukraine
In Brief ~ A Ground Floor Investment |
| - Walking around Kiev, you have to keep reminding yourself
- 20 years ago this place was home to hordes of Communist masses training
to take the Fulda Gap and standing in breadlines yearning to breathe free.
While echoes of the past are plainly obvious in some areas of town, these
days, the city appears almost gushingly cosmopolitan in many neighborhoods.
The distinction can be remarkable. Last year Ukraine was thrust into the
international spotlight during the Orange Revolution of presidential opposition
candidate Viktor Yushchenko. |

Currencies: What really counts is market sentiment |
| - Exchanging
your funds into foreign currency at the wrong exchange rate can have an
immense effect on your wealth. But how do you make sure you are getting
the best from the exchange rate movements? What really counts is
market sentiment; an amorphous barely definable factor that changes the
minds of traders about whether they should buy or sell currencies and,
what’s most alarming is that market sentiment can change direction quicker
than a spooked rabbit. By Sophie Stride |

| Where
The Chips Fall ~ Global Economics and Emerging Markets |
| - This is how it starts…. They’ve saved for decades, investing
in the very securities that have been the world’s benchmark for stability.
Having kept their currency artificially cheap (until recently) combined
with a Stalin-esque approach to controlling economic and social policy
has created an abundance of wealth that is being wisely invested around
the world. As a significant consumer goods exporter to the United States,
an unbalanced trade account refuels their industrial and financial machine
to the tune of billions each year. China’s growing partnerships across
emerging markets, particularly in Latin America, strengthen their international
influence and reputation. |

| Who's
Keeping Oil Down? |
| -
Oil had energy investors reaching for the Tums the last few weeks.
So, what happened? Mainstream financial media blamed crude’s tumble on
everything from Iran playing nice with the U.S. to a so far hurricane-less
hurricane season in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. But any intelligent observer
can see that the fall was too hard and too sudden to be caused by these
factors alone. |

On Investing In The Ukraine |
|
- By Jason Jones - Very good article on the investment climate in the Ukraine.
The article looks at how the Ukraine has done over the past few years in
its attempts to attract international capital. Historically, there has
always been a strong connection between Poland and the Ukraine and in the
above article Poland is used as one of the guideposts to determine whether
or not the Ukraine is headed in the right direction. The article also looks
at politics and its role on how the Ukraine will fair in the short-term. |

article comes to Escape From America Magazine via John Gaver, Editor and
Publisher of Action America. John writes about how and why the wealthy
are leaving the United States in record numbers. He asks if it is
any wonder that, according to records of citizenship and permanent residency
applications at many foreign consulates, the wealthiest Americans are leaving
the USA at the highest rate ever for more wealth friendly climates? |

Brad Fields is a top financial consultant with Opportunities Abroad which

laws, overseas real estate bargains - practically every international opportunity
available. Brad writes, "Labuan is an offshore tax haven you probably don't
know much about. This is a significant advantage since keeping a low profile
is an integral part of privacy, after all. Just how "secret" are you if
you conduct your banking or business transactions in such well-known jurisdictions
as Switzerland or the Cayman Islands? If privacy weren't high on your list
of financial criteria, you wouldn't be interesting in going offshore in
the first place." |

Offshore ~ These autonomous freezones have no shores - Floating Nations |
|
- John Kosanke from FreeNation Update tells us about the progress of floating
cities and autonomous freezones, a refuge from regulators of all stripes
- an internet refuge. Three such way offshore cities are being constructed.
One is an internet refuge; another 4/5ths of a mile long (4500 linear feet),
this multi-level barge will slowly circle the globe and remain within international
waters; yet another will be. the first residential cruise ship. That's
supply and demand folks. More vessels are in the cards. |
