Down To Earth Living - The Cave Houses Of Southern Spain - The
Cave Houses Of Southern Spain -
Old cave houses in the Granada countryside can still be found for a relatively
small investment. Last year, old cave houses in need of renovation were
on the market in Granada's pricey Albaycin district for 30,000 to 50,000
euros on small lots with no conventional buildings and no Alhambra views.
For finished cave houses, expect to pay eighty to two-hundred thousand
euros, depending on the adjoining land that goes with the cave, the views,
etc. There are currently cave houses with land advertised for as high as
900,000 euros, with Alhambra views, though we regard this price as extraordinary.
Given the real estate market in Spain, prices will continue to go up. You
can also explore areas such as Guadix and either buy existing cave homes
or buy land and build, with the latter option probably presenting the best
value if you discover a good site. by Charles Leary and Vaughn Perret |

Estate In Salvador de Bahia - The Soul Of Brazil - Great
photographs and insights into what it takes to find real estate in Salvador
de Bahia, Brazil - "Brazilian property owners and agents pray nightly that
Americans and Europeans will arrive, because they know that buyers from
these countries are most likely to jump on an “excellent deal!” in
fear that someone else will come along and snatch it up before they do.
The real estate bubble hasn’t drifted all that far south from North America
yet. - - The beaches, the music, the culture and most importantly the people
are the main reasons that some expats have moved here. Life is also more
relaxed. One expat with a family says that living here as a family has
many positives. Cost of medical and dental care is much lower and very
good. Food and staple commodities are lower, everything in fact, except
for gasoline. Help is much more affordable. And there is a very good Pan-American
school for kids." - By Robin Sparks |

Estate In Romania - Investing in a Land of Unexpected Opportunity
- The ability to start an inn or bed and breakfast in one of
these areas is ripe. We even know of a top Bucharest hotel chef ready to
pack his bags and commit his energy to starting the restaurant in one of
these new destinations for a small piece of the potential profit he believes
it will yield. Those who are in Romania, know the market, and have seen
what has happened thus far, have little doubt what the future will yield
and are ready to do almost anything to get in on the action. By

Cape Dutch Architecture - The Little Provisions Stop That Did - South
Africa's Cape Dutch Architecture - Diverse
influences from medieval Holland and Germany, French Huguenots and Indonesia
contributed to the graceful and unique style known as Cape Dutch Architecture.
A small population mingling Eastern and European styles combined with local
resources resulted in the elegant, reed thatch buildings found all over
the Western Cape Province. These Cape Dutch Homesteads are not a product
of a formal school of architecture but instead were created out of necessity
and designed from the creative minds of their craftsmen. By

Moving To Charente - Living In Rural France - Moving
To Charente - Living In Rural France - Above the ground
floor there were steps leading to the grenier, where thick ancient beams
held up the old tiled roof. The attic walls would need fixing. We ducked
below hanging curtains of cobwebs to check out the small finished bedroom
at the end, that lay hidden behind a rough cinderblock wall. It was usable,
with nice large arched windows. ...magnificent overhead beams, some
ancient, some newer, in every ceiling. Steps down lead to a huge great
room with fireplace, and a modest typical French kitchen at one end.

Estate In Japan -It Can Be Done -
...there DOES exist a crack in the Tokyo dome. It exists in the legal system.
I say this from first hand experience. The Japanese have locked themselves
by their culture and rigid inflexible interpretation of their legal system
into a situation that can be taken advantage of by anybody with the will
to do so. The rest of this is about why and how we did it and it can be
a guide (or you could call it a light at the end of the tunnel) to anyone
wishing to own real property in Japan without paying off a mortgage for
30 or more of the most productive years of your lives. The author,
David
Markle is a long-term permanent resident of Japan and lives with his
family in rural central Japan. He has previously contributed to Escape
From America Magazine with a unique article on homesteading in Japan. -

Real Estate - Can Anyone Buy Swiss Property? - Swiss
Real Estate - Can Anyone Buy Swiss Property? - In
order to encourage foreign investment in low value rental property in Switzerland,
there are 20 year tax breaks for those who invest in such properties with
at least 500,000 CHF capital outlay and the balance financed by way of
mortgage. Rents will be around 30% lower than usual and a government
subsidy will compensate you for investing in this kind of property.
Over the 20 year period the rents will increase, and the subsidy will decrease.
Foreign investors will be exempt from cantonal and communal taxes for the

Estate In Montenegro - The Jewel Of The Adriatic - For
the investor who wants to take the trouble to do the investing now, the
rewards will be great in the very near future. The most important
part of the equation, however, is how lovely and enjoyable the area is,
and how wonderful and hospitable the people are. It is truly an enjoyable
place to visit and to recreate! If you just decide to buy a condominium,
it will be a place you yearn to go to all year long. I have been
going there for the last ten years, and I can hardly wait for my next trip.
I usually stop off in Rome or Paris, but I am really looking forward to
sunbathing and enjoying one of the beautiful beaches in Crna Gora. By

...Consider, too, the livability of the destination you're writing about.
Just because a locale is affordable -- and might make a terrific vacation
destination -- that doesn’t necessarily mean it's an attractive place to
live. I spent two years working as a Peace Corps volunteer on a remote
island between Madagascar and Mozambique. It's beautiful there (turquoise
waters, talcum beaches, flowers by the bucketful). Property is cheap. People
are friendly. But for a myriad of reasons, it isn't a place I recommend
expatriates settle. -

in With Double-Digit Returns in Asia’s Resurgent “Tiger” Economies
- Since 1998, several mutual funds specializing in Asian growth
and income have become available. One of the best is the Ashmore Asian
Recovery Fund (ARF), domiciled in Guernsey. This is the best-performing
Asian growth and income fund in its class since May 1998. The Fund was
specifically created in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis and
was one of the first retail investment funds to invest in the distressed
region. Ashmore Group specializes in emerging market fixed-income securities
and is probably the best investment house analyzing credit risk in Asia
and other developing economies. By Eric Roseman |

Your
Last Chance To Clear Up Your Past California Taxes -
....you may not be aware you still owe taxes in California if you have
lived abroad for years. These amounts can be owed for amounts earned
in California for which you did not file returns or amounts assessed for
which the notices have never reached your new home outside of the USA.
The state records go back many years. In one situation the state
went all the way back to 1977. You should as soon as possible contact
the Franchise Tax Board (for income and franchise taxes) or the Board of
Equalization (for sales and use taxes) to see if any taxes are owed.
If the state shows you owe money, you should consider the amnesty program
and file amended or prior year unfilled returns prior to April 1, 2005.

| Get Into Euros - Forget Politics
- The Business Of Business Is Business - Forty-Four Billion Petro-Euros
Can't Be Wrong - Get
Out of the Dollar - Get Into Euros - The
rise in Euro denominated deposits has been accompanied by an equivalent
decline in US dollar denominated deposits. The choice is very simple for
the international investor, do you hold your money in dollars or euros.
Increasingly, investors are switching to euros. Much of this may be politically
motivated, and there are increasing reports of non-US aligned OPEC countries
quietly switching away from dollars which is causing the continuous run
on the dollar. Iraq, less quietly, started demanding euros for its oil
in 2000, and Iran is currently trying to set up a euro-based competitor
to the New York-London hydrocarbon stock duopoly. The main reason, however,
is not political but economic. The euro is currently stronger and more
stable than the dollar. - By Louis Sola |

eBooks for Profit - What we're looking for are ideas, not
Pulitzer Prize writers. Ideas are what fuel our magazine and our website.
Now we want to expand that concept into eBooks for expats. You don't
have to be a professional writer to submit a report that provides important
information - - information that you yourself have learned by having been
there and done it. That is exactly what our readers are seeking, facts
about living overseas from people who've done it, facts about buying a
barge and sailing down the Danube, what it takes to migrate to Argentina,
how to open a business in Prague, buy an island in Belize, get a job in
Paris, start a farm in Mozambique, run an internet business out of the
Dominican Republic, run a rent-a-scooter shop in Mauritius.
