You may have seen the film National Treasure, in which Nicolas Cage has to unlock a multi-layered puzzle to find a vast treasure. China is like that for many investors - a virtually limitless treasure chest with an enormous number of investment opportunities,  if only you can find the darned key.  It’s certainly worth the effort. Within China, one will find many doors and boxes guarding different fortunes for manufacturers seeking low cost production, traders sourcing inexpensive products, companies with unique products they want to sell to the 100+ million consumers with relatively high disposable income, and pure investors who want to play the real property market or invest in non-performing loans or China “B” shares. Finding the correct keys to access China’s treasures is no easy task. The good news is that Hong Kong is not only the gateway to China, it holds the golden key to China’s many treasure chests. - The ‘Freest Place in the World’ - How Hong Kong Can Help You Unlock China’s Treasure Chest

China’s Emerging Venture Capital Opportunities - Without question, China has quickly become the new economic growth frontier.  Pursuing investment opportunities in China have become far easier as a result of recent changes in China’s law.  Until just three years ago, China did not have an enabling law for the formation and availability of venture capital funds.  Without such a law, substantial capital from China's private sector could not be effectively channeled into development of a high-tech sector for venture funding. Since the early 1990s, Chinese government leaders have witnessed and admired the growth of the technology sector and the ensuing benefits to the United States’ economy.  They have attributed such growth, among other factors, to the presence of an active venture capital community in the US and other western countries. They have openly made known their desire to see the success of the western venture capital process replicated in China and have taken initiatives and adopted policies over the recent years to achieve this ambition.

Hong Kong is the gateway to China as the lead article indicates. There are now more billionaires in China than any other country besides the United States, according to Forbes magazine.  According to the latest list of rich people put out by the magazine, the US continues to top the list with 403 billionaires. But what has really been surprising has been the strong ascendancy of China. The country increased its number of billionaires on the list to 64 in 2009 from 28 in 2008. Where is Discovery Bay (Hong Kong) and why is it a unique place to live? - Hong Kong is such a great place to live because it is so unique in so many different ways. Within 10 minutes radius you can be living amongst high rise buildings and trendy restaurants or by the beach in lovely house. Discovery Bay is only a short 30 minute ferry ride away from Hong Kong Island, we are situated on the same island as the airport – Lantau Island. I truly believe we have the best of both worlds, we have the luxury of a holiday destination where the only mode of private transport is golf carts and bicycles. The area is also known as delivery bay by many people as the population of DB is generally full of children and their dogs. This is such a unique place to live where everything is within walking distance which makes access to anything easy. We have many mountains that are definitely worth hiking and a very close nit community where most people know each other! Each area has it’s own community, whether you live on a boat at the Marina or in a townhouse on the golf course you feel part of a community within a community.
Secrets To Surviving In China Learning What It Takes To Make It In China  - Beijing has many foreign firms and major corporations such as IBM, Nokia, Motorola, and others. What most people do not know is that many offices and operations here in Beijing are only representative offices, with the some exception. These are small offices that only employ a small number of employees, mostly Chinese. The issue of communication is critical here. Communication barriers in China will destroy any potential you may have for success if you're not careful. I've seen communication failures ruin business deals while making major corporations look bad. Communication can be a problem if you are trying to negotiate a contract with the Chinese. Any holes in your contract, or ambiguous language can be left to the interpretation of your employer. This can mean that you can be expected to perform extra duties or work additional hours not within your job description. Do research on the Internet about contracts, as it can make or break your China experience! If possible avoid using a Chinese law firm for contractual issues. I have two law degrees and have seen many Chinese law firms and I am not impressed.
Investing In China: The 21 Century Powerhouse - Investing in China - Most Americans are provincial. If they travel anywhere, it's likely to be to Western Europe; the Orient (forget about Africa and South America) is pretty much Terra Incognita. The distinctions between the different countries and cultures in the Orient -which are as least as great as those in Europe - escape most of them. It's dangerous making broad generalizations about millions of people, including Americans, but the reason ethnic jokes are so funny is that while they generalize and exaggerate, they also crystallize the essence of various cultures. The two dominant countries in the Orient are China and Japan, and their cultural differences are as distinct as those of the Swedes and the Sicilians. In a nutshell, Chinese culture is notably more lenient, more tolerant, more anarchistic, rebellious, creative, and individualistic; the Japanese are stricter, by-the book, group-oriented, organized, and obedient. The differences are illustrated crisply in martial arts, something I have personal familiarity with, but they extend across into everything.
Roving Capitalist Shares His Secrets of Uncovering Gold Mines - Emerging market run-ups are being fueled by the trillions of dollars trying to find a temporary home. When that home starts growing mold, the trillions will pack up and head back to civilization (provided capital controls don’t stop them at the border). We have a long list of solid companies with solid management and sound business models that we are watching while we wait for the right opportunity to buy. If we recommend something along the way, it’s because a particular company or security satisfies our comfort level. But right now so few do that we are buying gold and real estate and husbanding cash for the big opportunity. Remember that the key to real success is to be bold when others are timid and timid when others are bold. Today, as we raise our field glasses to survey the investment and speculative battlefield, our helmets are pulled down low and our knees are trembling. We’re not just timid but downright cowardly. Our only boast is that we have the courage to admit it.
Living Overseas: Before You Jump - Thinking About What You Need To Know Before Moving Abroad - Much of the above would have been helpful for me to know before I moved with my family to Hong Kong. Of course, if your new home is a place much frequented by expatriates, as Hong Kong is, chances are that someone from the American Chamber of Commerce has already written a book for newbys just like you. These hands-on guides are invaluable: they provide tips on everything from grocery shopping to how to get a driver’s license. Tips on schools and how to hire a maid. Where to get tennis lessons and where to buy a carpet. How to bargain in the markets with the Chinese.  Most Americans end up overseas for business, and little in their domestic working life will have prepared them for what they’ll find. Certainly that was the case with me; I’d been in the Peace Corps in North Africa, but aside from that my world experience was restricted to tourist trips to Europe. So I had no real knowledge of what a regional job in Hong Kong might be like, or of the business practices I’d discover.  Before he left, the man I followed into my post took me on a two-week trip through Asia to help me find that out.
