You
may have seen the film National Treasure, in which Nicolas Cage has to
unlock a multi-layered puzzle to find a vast treasure. China is like
that for many investors - a virtually limitless treasure chest with an
enormous number of investment opportunities, if only you can find
the darned key. It’s certainly worth the effort. Within China, one
will find many doors and boxes guarding different fortunes for manufacturers
seeking low cost production, traders sourcing inexpensive products, companies
with unique products they want to sell to the 100+ million consumers with
relatively high disposable income, and pure investors who want to play
the real property market or invest in non-performing loans or China “B”
shares. Finding the correct keys to access China’s treasures is no easy
task. The good news is that Hong Kong is not only the gateway to China,
it holds the golden key to China’s many treasure chests. - The

Finding
a Home in Hong Kong
- As Asia seems to be leading the way out of the global recession, talk
has turned to real estate markets in the likes of Hong Kong which are booming
again. No one wants to see a secondary dip as overblown bubbles burst,
so the local government is actively working to calm the market by releasing
more land for sale and restricting mortgage lending for example. However,
just last month a local developer paid $165 million for a plot of prime
residential land in the city’s Kowloon district – which really flies in
the face and defies active government interventional efforts to rein in
real estate prices. The ‘problem’ is that Hong Kong’s star is rising economically
speaking, geographically speaking land is in limited supply, demand for
residential and commercial space is intense, and so all fundamentals support
the rise in value of real estate. This is juxtaposed against a background
of a massive real estate market crash in 1997, and the fact that globally
some economies are still rebounding or in recession – therefore any positive
movements in Hong Kong’s real estate economy are being looked at with caution.

How
to Become a Resident in Hong Kong
- Hong Kong is an impossible to define destination. It’s a location
like no other on this earth where you encounter massive contrasts at every
turn, and where your expectations can be both challenged and exceeded at
the same time! It is one of two special administrative regions (SAR)
of the People’s Republic of China and a former British colony, and yet
it cannot really be considered wholly Chinese and you definitely can’t
say it embodies Great Britain. The landscape in Hong Kong is breathtaking
because of the stark contrasts you witness all around you – from magnificent
high rise structures for as far as the eye can see, to peaceful temples
and gardens – and the wealth of the region is incredible but significantly
undermined in any form of importance by the simplicity of many local people’s
lives.

Hong
Kong: The Conflicting Nature of its Islands
- Having stayed on the two main islands, ‘Central’ and ‘Kowloon’ in Hong
Kong, I could not help but wonder how diverse they both were in not just
lifestyles but outlook as well. In my opinion, Central, the main
business district of Hong Kong exudes a sophisticated look whereas Kowloon
has a charmingly festive nature to it. ‘Central’ reminded me of the
famous C.B.D. Connaught Place and Kowloon’ bore the look of a famous shopping
area by the name of Karol Bagh, located at New Delhi in India, my permanent
abode. Kowloon is the southern tip of the peninsula and faces Hong
Kong island. Taking a ferry ride from one end to the other, I noticed the
diversifying nature of the two islands. My visits to the Victoria Peak
offering panaromic view of all of Hong Kong also cemented this hypothesis.

Where
is Discovery Bay (Hong Kong) and why is it a unique place to live?
- Hong Kong is such a great place to live because it is so unique in so
many different ways. Within 10 minutes radius you can be living amongst
high rise buildings and trendy restaurants or by the beach in lovely house.
Discovery Bay is only a short 30 minute ferry ride away from Hong Kong
Island, we are situated on the same island as the airport – Lantau Island.
I truly believe we have the best of both worlds, we have the luxury of
a holiday destination where the only mode of private transport is golf
carts and bicycles. The area is also known as delivery bay by many people
as the population of DB is generally full of children and their dogs. This
is such a unique place to live where everything is within walking distance
which makes access to anything easy. We have many mountains that are definitely
worth hiking and a very close nit community where most people know each
other! Each area has it’s own community, whether you live on a boat at
the Marina or in a townhouse on the golf course you feel part of a community
within a community.

Hills,
Mountains And Sea ~ The Adventure Side Of Hong Kong
- Trekking up a steep knife-edged ridge, covered in late season grass,
the slope gently dropped off on either side. To my right, the green rolling
hills were expansive, filling the horizon with a never-ending panorama
of undisturbed nature. To my left, an easy bluff eventually gave way to
a sharp drop of approximately sixty meters, ending on a sandy beach. Lazy
blue waves broke mildly against the dark jagged forms of age-old rocks.
Further out, fishing boat and sampans sailed along the point where sky
and earth meet, silently going about their business, as they had since
time immemorial. A warm wind blew across the soft peak, and with the exception
of my mates, I was alone, in a peaceful world, recovering from the stresses
of modern society. Just a few kilometers away lay the hyper-modern center
of Hong Kong, with its busy financial district and high-rise bank buildings.

Living
And Teaching In Singapore And Hong Kong: What You Need To Know
- The first thing to consider when thinking about teaching English in Asia
is your qualifications. Simply being a native speaker is no longer enough.
In Singapore and Hong Kong (which are both excellent bases to live and
work whilst you plan your adventures during school holidays) you will need
to be qualified. The more qualifications you have in the field the better.
In both countries, you will need a sponsor in order to obtain a working
visa. In my experience there are three types of sponsor and I list these
in order of preference. Your first choice should be an international school,
your second a government school and your third would be a commercial language
school. In order to secure a position in an International school, you will
need a college or university degree in English language or Literature along
with a post graduate diploma in education or similar.

Roving
Capitalist Shares His Secrets of Uncovering Gold Mines
- Emerging market run-ups are being fueled by the trillions of dollars
trying to find a temporary home. When that home starts growing mold, the
trillions will pack up and head back to civilization (provided capital
controls don’t stop them at the border). We have a long list of solid companies
with solid management and sound business models that we are watching while
we wait for the right opportunity to buy. If we recommend something along
the way, it’s because a particular company or security satisfies our comfort
level. But right now so few do that we are buying gold and real estate
and husbanding cash for the big opportunity. Remember that the key to real
success is to be bold when others are timid and timid when others are bold.
Today, as we raise our field glasses to survey the investment and speculative
battlefield, our helmets are pulled down low and our knees are trembling.
We’re not just timid but downright cowardly. Our only boast is that we
have the courage to admit it.

Living
Overseas: Before You Jump - Thinking About What You Need To Know Before
Moving Abroad - Much of the above would have
been helpful for me to know before I moved with my family to Hong Kong.
Of course, if your new home is a place much frequented by expatriates,
as Hong Kong is, chances are that someone from the American Chamber of
Commerce has already written a book for newbys just like you. These hands-on
guides are invaluable: they provide tips on everything from grocery shopping
to how to get a driver’s license. Tips on schools and how to hire a maid.
