A
Mediterranean country with beautiful scenery along both the Adriatic and
Ionian coasts, along with a great mountain landscape, Albania is attracting
a lot of attention from international property investors, large investment
companies & holidaymakers. Albania offers spectacular scenery and
views, hundreds of kilometres of unspoiled and undeveloped pristine sandy
coastlines, white sandy beaches, mountains, archaeological sites, ancient
monuments and castles. Albania is a key holiday destination for Kosovans
and Macedonians. The country is totally undiscovered by westerners and
it is actually considered the last emerging market in Europe to be developed.
Albania offers a fascinating history that includes initial settlement by
the Illyrians and eventually the Romans, Venetians, Byzantines and even
Ottomans. - Albania:

Real
Estate Good Buys Overseas for Just $50,000
- In previous issues of Escape From America Magazine we detailed some amazing
properties you can buy overseas for $150,000 or less . The following week
we listed properties available at $100,000 or less and then what you can
buy on an even lower budget of $75,000. This week, part 4 of
our 4 part series, we are going to show you what $50,000 will buy.
We looked for homes that were ready to move in to, or needed very little
in the way of renovation. Instead of providing the links to
the properties featured in this article we are listing them on a separate
newsletter which is free and easy to subscribe to. This is so that
we can keep you up to date with properties in a price bracket that suits
your pocket. Subscription details are given at the end of the article.

Albania
~ Teaching In Europe's Only Islamic State
- Albania has always seemed somewhat of a mystery to many in the western
world, hidden behind the iron curtain for many years, only opening up to
the west in the last 10 years or so. It is however an up and coming Balkan
country just north of Greece and south of Kosovo. It is still the poorest
country in Europe but incredibly beautiful, mountainous with a Mediterranean
climate to boot. Albanian traditional culture, an interesting mix of east
and west is abundant and flow along with the newfound practicalities of
the west. Tirana the capital now has an abundance of Internet cafes, a
French patisserie, Irish pubs and so on jostling along with traditional
cafes and bars. In the smaller cities and towns life is less fast paced
and remnants of the Ottoman Era and communism are everywhere.

One
Day In Albania ~ Europe's Unknown Country
- by Richard Robinson - The deck of the Antonios K rattled and shook beneath
my feet as the dark land mass loomed larger through a summer sea haze.
Against a bluish mountain backdrop the outlines of buildings sharpened
slowly as we drew nearer Europe’s most mysterious country. For long Albania
had been a totalitarian state and, before that, the fiefdom of the shadowy
King Zog. Few would choose it for a sun-and-fun holiday, but things are
slowly changing. As we juddered towards Saranda, Albania’s southerly resort-port,
a rash of blockhouses came into focus, scattered across the mountainside.
Closer in, they looked like Iron Curtain tenements but as the haze thinned
they revealed themselves as the shells of new holiday hotels and apartments,
almost all of them only part-built.

Living
in Europe There's No Place I'd Rather be -
For many Americans the best fringe benefit of a relocation to Europe is
the opportunity for accessible travel through a continent with incredible
cultural diversity. Of course, there are the destinations that anyone on
a two-to-three year residency will have on their "must see" list, but few
people will return to the US without some village, region, resort or city
occupying a special place in their recollections of traveling through Europe.
Those who stay a little longer often have the chance to range a bit farther
and perhaps to form a long-term bond with a particular place. Clare Sievers
asked six prominent US citizens resident in Europe to share their thoughts
on a favorite holiday destination.

Barge
Shopping In Europe - The second-most frequently
asked question after “Why did you do this?” is “How did you do this?”
After thirty years in the computer software industry, we needed to try
something different. When we took a barge piloting course with Roger
Van Dyken in France, my husband Paul and I had come back with the dream
of owning a barge and living in Europe at least half of the year.
The timing was right for us personally. Paul’s two children were
both in their thirties and on their own. We no longer had aging parents
or relatives to take care of and we were still young enough and healthy
enough to handle the physical aspects of a large boat. Methodically
we wrote up spreadsheets and tested the validity of our financial premise:
if we sold our house, our two cars and most of our furniture, and took
along a few paying passengers on the barge, we could buy a barge and make
ends meet until we reached an official retirement age.

Roving
Capitalist Shares His Secrets of Uncovering Gold Mines
- Emerging market run-ups are being fueled by the trillions of dollars
trying to find a temporary home. When that home starts growing mold, the
trillions will pack up and head back to civilization (provided capital
controls don’t stop them at the border). We have a long list of solid companies
with solid management and sound business models that we are watching while
we wait for the right opportunity to buy. If we recommend something along
the way, it’s because a particular company or security satisfies our comfort
level. But right now so few do that we are buying gold and real estate
and husbanding cash for the big opportunity. Remember that the key to real
success is to be bold when others are timid and timid when others are bold.
Today, as we raise our field glasses to survey the investment and speculative
battlefield, our helmets are pulled down low and our knees are trembling.
We’re not just timid but downright cowardly. Our only boast is that we
have the courage to admit it.

Beware
the Swinging Pendulum: Understanding Inflection Points
- As global speculators and investors looking to grow and protect our wealth,
we are constantly on the look out for shifts in the social, geopolitical
and economic landscape. As members of the Without Borders community understand,
we have recently entered a period of change that will prove as significant
as the end of the Cold War. This seismic shift is one of four central
themes we expect to influence every aspect of your and our lives over the
next decade or more. We call this shift the rise of the Politiconomy:
the hostile merger of politics and economics. In the western world, there
was once a clear distinction between politics and economics. During
the cold war if politicians were to even hint at state intervention in
the economy they were branded ¨pinko¨ and their career ended shortly
thereafter.
