The
US Virgin Islands have become a very popular destination for retirees,
second homeowners and anyone aspiring to live a better quality of life.
In the Virgin Islands you can live the island life while still being protected
by US laws, government and a stable economy. You can easily work,
start a business or buy real estate just like in the States -- transacting
in English and using the US dollar. Move to paradise without being a millionaire.
If you’re reading this you have probably daydreamed of leaving the mainland
and living the “island life.” What’s stopping you from giving up
the daily grind and starting over in an exotic destination? Do you
have concerns about investing in a risky foreign market? Are you
unsure of how you’d support yourself financially? Are you unwilling
to give up the modern conveniences you are accustomed to? The US Virgin
Islands have become a popular destination for retirees, second homeowners
and anyone aspiring to live a better quality of life. Of course there
are cheaper places to move to, but in the Virgin Islands you can live the
island life while still being protected by US laws, government and a stable
economy. You can easily work, start a business or buy real estate
just like in the States -- transacting in English and using the US dollar
– and it is possible to move to paradise without being a millionaire. Write

Quadrille
and Carnival : Highdays and Holidays
- The USVI is located in the Lesser Antilles, at the top of the arc
of islands that form the Caribbean chain. Its two closest neighbors are
Puerto Rico to the north-west and the British Virgin Islands to the north-east.
Four major islands make up the USVI, from largest to smallest in size they
include: St. Croix at 84 square miles (217.56 square kilometers), St. Thomas
at a little over 31 square miles (80 square kilometers), St. John at 20
square miles (51.8 square kilometers) and little Water Island at 491.5
acres (1.99 square kilometers). Approximately 50 small cays and islets
are also part of the USVI. Most Caribbean islands were colonized by European
nations in the 1600s. This is true for the present day USVI which was a
Danish colony for over two centuries. At that time it was named the Danish
West Indies.

Maintaining
Good Health and Upgrading Wellbeing - A review of Healthcare in the BVI
- The territory of the British Virgin Islands is home to over 27,000 people,
but during the year it is the host to thousands of visitors who come to
enjoy our beautiful islands, sailing, diving, vacationing in our hotels,
inns and villas, and visiting on cruise ships. The government, private
and voluntary organisations of our small country are not only responsible
for the care of the residents, but also of our visitors, visitors who may,
quite unexpectedly, suffer life-threatening or crippling accidents or medical
emergencies, as well as the minor injuries and loss of pills and medications
that are a normal part of life. Tags: Cuba

Cuba
- The Next Expat Property Hotspot? - There
are countless articles floating around about Cuba's potential to become
the next property hotspot - some imply that lifting travel restrictions
on American tourists will kick start a rise in property prices as they'll
fall for Havana's faded charms, or the beautiful Caribbean beaches, and
want a piece for themselves - so what's the reality? Two hurdles stand
in the way of a real estate boom in Cuba (three if you include the need
for a stable, democratically elected government). Allowing American tourists
in won't make a difference to the country's property market. In fact, tourist
numbers hit an all-time high this year. This country's a mainstream destination
for Canadians and Europeans. Cuba received more than a million tourists
in the first four months of 2010. That's double the number during the same
period in 2009. Tourism minister Manuel Marrero released the figures at
a tourism fair in Havana this month. He also spoke about government plans
to boost real estate development, and specifically tourism amenities--marinas,
spas, and golf courses.

Fascinating
Virgin Islands : Iguanas and a Ceremonial Ball Court
- The four principal islands are St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Water
island, with several dozen smaller islands forming a land area equal to
that of Washington D.C. Puerto Rico is 50 miles east. The islands are volcanic
in origin and mostly hilly and rugged with elevations up to 475 meters.
One of the USVI major concerns is lack of fresh water resources. Climate
is subtropical with little temperature variation year 'round. September
to November is rainy season. The USVI is subject to hurricanes: Hugo 1989,
Marilyn 1995, Bertha 1995, Georges 1998 and Lenny 1999, are some significant
hurricanes that have impacted the islands.

Historic
Inn for Sale in St. John, USVI - After years
of traveling the Caribbean, Sarah Close discovered her heaven on earth
in the form of St John, USVI, one of the most stunningly beautiful islands
in the Caribbean. With the purchase of the historic St John Inn (former
Cruz Inn) in Cruz Bay four years ago, Sarah happily settled in to her new
life as an Innkeeper…..in an environment and lifestyle that was light years
from her work as a realtor in wonderful, but weather challenged St Paul,
Minnesota. And what a rare opportunity this is as the St John Inn is the
ONLY commercial property on St John in which one can own the land as every
other business offers a lease. And, although not officially verified, the
Inn may be the oldest building on St. John!

Gaviota,
The Last Cowgirl in Cuba by Kirk Stephan
- I become even more schitzy than usual when I visit Cuba. Comparing the
resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle
society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last
trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first
inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence
of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport
in Cancun. I’d been used to getting some great photos of folk’s faces amidst
the air-conditioning steam that shot out of vents into the cabin just as
the Russian jets of Cubana Airline would leave the runway. Alas, no more
excitement here; Cuba has gone “Euro” with the acquisition of French planes.

Ecuador
vs The Caribbean: Which is Right for You?
- In 2009 I lived in the Dominican Republic, a small nation in the Caribbean,
for 6 months. But since 2005 I have been living on and off in Ecuador.
I love both places, but even though they may seem similar on the surface,
they are very different. Both with their pros and cons, you just have to
pick your poison, like picking between a blond and brunette. Here is how
they compare: Costs: Ecuador wins. Ecuador food, housing, public transport,
healthcare and real estate are all cheaper. The only thing that is cheaper
in the Dominican are the flights from the US. Food: Ecuador wins. Dominican
food tends to be greasy, fatty and lacks much variety. Ecuador food is
a delicious mix of seafoods, local fruits and veggies, soups and more.
All natural.

Living
in Belize – Experiencing the Countrye
- Some questions about Belize just need to be answered by your own visit
to the country. You can read all you want about a place but you really
won’t know how you will feel about moving there until you experience some
things yourself. Like I said in the introduction
to this series, I moved to Belize without
having visited and ended up loving it but there are people who have visited
Belize and told me that they hated it so it’s all about the personal experience.
In this post I want to focus on why you will want to visit Belize before
you really make your mind up about moving there. Once you are in Belize
get ready to learn and experience as much as you can. Put yourself
in situations that you would if you were living there rather than just
traveling. You may already have an idea of what district within Belize
you want to focus on but if you do not then let’s go over those first.
I will touch on the most popular expat destinations so please keep in mind
that there are other locations that are home to expats as well.

New
and Exciting Expat Destination - Hopes for Improved Relations between Cuba
and the USA - Hopes are rising for reconciliation
between Cuba and the USA following the election of Barack Obama as president.
The main obstacles to restoring relations are that either the USA would
have to drop demands for democracy on the island, or Cuba would have to
accept and implement them. Both are equally unlikely scenarios with no
obvious middle ground on which to base a compromise. During the presidential
election campaign Obama stated that the current embargo would remain in
place to be used as a bargaining chip to bring about democratic change
in Cuba. However, many political experts suggest that a greater impact
could be achieved by ending the embargo and sanctions which are largely
blamed by the Government to explain the island´s poverty and hardships
the people suffer. Lifting the restrictions would give the population the
opportunity to judge the leaders on their own merits.

Retire
to Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean - Dominica, the
Nature Island of the Caribbean, is an alluring land of majestic, mist-covered
mountains spilling with waterfalls. It is a place where rainforests with
parrots like flying rainbows and orchids growing wild are part of the natural
surroundings. "There is an earthy, beckoning presence to this island where
untamed Nature invites the newcomer to walk in her primal rainforests then
enter the caress of her warm mineral baths... Many souls have lost their
hearts to lesser beauty. The riotous abundance of fertile nature dazzles
the eye and the sweet scent of bay leaf and ginger permeates the air like
a perfume. ´Prepare to fall in love, utterly and completely,´
the Island whispers. Prepare to be unwilling to settle for life anywhere
but on this living island."
