I wake before sunrise the next morning to birdsong so loud, I'm sure I
must be in a bird sanctuary. In the morning light, I look more closely
at the interior of my $9 per night bungalow. Its every niche is crafted
with aesthetic taste. The door is handcarved with ornate precision. The
Indonesian four-poster bed is draped in a lacy mosquito net, the hand-woven
batik textiles gracing the walls and draped across the bed are works of
art, and the ceiling is peaked and thatched in bamboo. - - Robin Sparks

Library For Australia |
| - Australia
has long been a perennial favorite of those seeking a home away from home,
and with good reason. Australia remains one of the best expatriate destinations
on the planet. With its low population density, good quality of life and
an unpolluted environment Australia is as good as it gets. Escape Artist
gives Australia the highest rating. Despite some human rights violations
regarding Aboriginal people and a slight degree of racism, Australia has
one of the best records in the world regarding human rights. It has freedom
of the press and it remains an open society in which the will of it's people
is voiced and heard. |

In Bali - The Practicalities Of Moving To Bali |
| - I
move into a house in the midst of the rice paddies above the old artist
village of Bali called Penestanan. It is like moving into a zoo, so full
of creatures that I must wear earplugs at night to sleep. The house is
a large traditional Balinese home open to the outdoors complete with a
lush garden and lotus pond stocked with fat goldfish. Like most homes in
Bali, it comes with a "helper" or pembante. The cost of my magnificent
home in paradise? One million five hundred rupiahs, which at this writing
equals about $175 a month. |

Offshore Cyber - Island. Mauritius is well served by business and communications
infrastructure and is a dynamic economy; the government actively encourages
foreign investment and offshore activity through the Ministry of Industry
& Commerce. The ministry operates a one stop shop for clearances and
permits; it also provides assistance in identifying market outlets, joint
venture partners, site locations, and buildings. There is a wide
range of investment incentives for inward investment. Free Trade Zones
and a Freeport were established in 1992 enabling up to 100% foreign owned
enterprises. |

you want to be ahead of the crowd - find out where Micronesia is. Between
Hawaii and Guam, Micronesia is still one of the few remaining paradises
in the world. Because there are few visitors, the island and lagoon are
pristine. You won't believe the island or the healthy reef until you see
for yourself. |

| - We
landed in New Zealand true immigrant style. When we left for New Zealand,
known as the land of the "Long White Cloud", we allowed our family of five
just two bags each. One was for clothes and one for everything else we
wanted to bring to this "new land". We had no jobs, no relatives, and knew
no one. We left everything we had known in the US including a large house
overlooking San Francisco Bay, good paying jobs, cars, computers, furniture,
friends and family. (This decision from two people with advanced degrees!)
For us, moving to the South Pacific has been the best decision we ever
made. |

| - Tired
of the rat-race that America has become? Tired of being run-down by women
dominated by greed and material objects and who jump into bed with your
best friend? Then try something different, there is a place where things
move at a slow pace, where women are feminine and lady-like, and the cost
of living is a lot less. The weather is warm year-round, white sandy beaches
are everywhere with coconut palms gently swaying in the breeze. Crystal
clear waters, you can see the bottom 15 feet deep. |

| - This
is after all the Land of Smiles. I’m not dreaming this. It is however,
my personal vision of my very near future. You see, I’m in what I call
my “pre-expat” mode (according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary; the definition
of expatriate is: to leave one's native country to live elsewhere). Now,
there are numerous reasons why one chooses to become an Expat. In my case
there are a few but the biggest of all is “money” (as in the lack of it),
especially since I’m basically going to survive on Social Security. Then
of course, there’s that great big catastrophic storm cloud that’s being
prophesized for the U.S.A. in the very near future (both financially and
politically). |

| - Tonga
is a wonderful mix of culture and humor. Humor prevails in Tonga. Like
a theme park, Tonga has all the characters. Living here is challenging,
elusive and most interesting. Orderly chaos might describe its internal
functions. Like a beehive, the closer in you get the more confusion and
disorder you see, but somehow critters that aren’t meant to fly do and
things get done, problems get solved or just go away - this is Tonga. If
the plane does not fly today, it may tomorrow and that gives you another
day to enjoy your stay. |

| - There
are perhaps three ways to look at property: As a productive asset, as a
speculative holding, or as a lifestyle proposition. I've spent a fair amount
of time and money flying around Vanuatu to get a grip on property, and
I think it's worth considering, possibly on all three bases. Vanuatu is
certainly one of the world’s more beautiful locations. James Michener used
it as the model for Bali Hai when he wrote Tales of the South Pacific while
he was stationed here during WW II. The French developed numerous copra
plantations on the islands over the 100 years up to independence in 1980,
and they're still the dominant factor in today's economy. |

On Islands Around The World - Listed By Island |
| - When
in Corsica, do as the Corsicans do. It’s dusk, and I’m wandering Ajaccio’s
back streets, on the hunt for Mafia-black sunshades. Even at night, they
seem required garb for locals... and I always like to fit in. “Corsica
is France, but it is not French,” wrote Paul Theroux. Indeed. Although
the island is claimed by France, it’s geographically closer to Italy...
and this produces paradoxes aplenty. Yet it’s not just the local penchant
for ridiculous sunshades that evokes the weird sensation of being in an
Italian port town. |

& Investing In The Pacific Islands - Includes almost two dozen islands
of the Pacific. One of our early directories; the Pacific Islands
did not prove as popular as we originally expected; yet the Pacific Islands
have much to offer the romantic expatriate seeking a Joseph Conrad lifestyle.
We have number of articles on living in the Pacific Islands and we have
real estate listing for the Pacific Islands. The issue is land mass.
While many of the Pacific Islands are excellent places to live; there isn't
a surplus of land; and there isn't a surplus of infrastructure. The
day is coming when inter-connectivity will be universal, and then those
who had the forethought to relocate to some island in the Pacific will
be in the right place at the right time |
