has long been a perennial favorite of those seeking a home away from home,
and with good reason. Australia remains one of the best expatriate destinations
on the planet. With its low population density, good quality of life and
an unpolluted environment Australia is as good as it gets. Escape Artist
gives Australia the highest rating. Despite some human rights violations
regarding Aboriginal people and a slight degree of racism, Australia has
one of the best records in the world regarding human rights. It has freedom
of the press and it remains an open society in which the will of it's people
is voiced and heard. |

In Bali - The Practicalities Of Moving To Bali |
| - I
move into a house in the midst of the rice paddies above the old artist
village of Bali called Penestanan. It is like moving into a zoo, so full
of creatures that I must wear earplugs at night to sleep. The house is
a large traditional Balinese home open to the outdoors complete with a
lush garden and lotus pond stocked with fat goldfish. Like most homes in
Bali, it comes with a "helper" or pembante. The cost of my magnificent
home in paradise? One million five hundred rupiahs, which at this writing
equals about $175 a month. |

| - They
say if you do something every day for two weeks it becomes a habit.
We’ve been in Aotearoa (the native Maori name for New Zealand meaning Land
of the Long White Cloud) for about six months now. Having moved from
the American Southwest to the Southern Hemisphere in June we (almost) feel
like we belong here. And like a marriage it sometimes seems like
it’s been six years…but other times like six days. It all depends
on what we’re doing at the time. When we’re in the middle of doing
the day-to-day things everyone does we sometimes feel like we’re still
back in the “old country”, the exception being that we can rejoice that
Wal-Mart hasn’t found its way here yet. Other times we feel like we’re
on an extended vacation in a very magical land filled with new things to
see around every corner. |

some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200
km) south of Tokyo. It is one of the world's youngest and smallest nations.
We admit that we really don't have much on Palau; however real estate listings

not a place for the rugged individualist, but if you like 'Order' with
a capital "O" it is certainly orderly. The location of the biggest military
disaster in British history is now a thriving international business center
micro-managed by yet another of those social engineers who knows how others
should conduct their lives better they themselves know. It has always been
said that you can't argue with success; but nobody who says that has a
clear definition of what the word success should mean. |

Hua Hin way of life is about uncomplicated living, Thai seafood, coffee
houses, open markets, silk and craft shops, and a vibrant yet melodious
existence. Eating is the main topic day and night. It starts in the morning
and continues until late seven days a week only bested by the festive holiday
celebrations. There are, in fact, a handful of western pubs with young
women anticipating the next generously intoxicated farang, but nothing
like Patong Beach or Pattaya, whatsoever. |

Cook Islands are a self-governing parliamentary democracy in free association
with New Zealand. The fifteen small islands in this South Pacific Ocean
country have a total land area of 240 square kilometres (92.7 sq mi), but
the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers 1.8 million square
kilometres (0.7 million sq mi) of ocean. Once again we haven't one article

Fiji Islands - the Republic of the Fiji Islands are an island nation in
the South Pacific Ocean east of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and south of Tuvalu.
The country occupies an archipelago of about 322 islands, of which 106
are permanently inhabited, and 522 islets. The two major islands, Viti
Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population. If any expats
are living there we would welcome some information to add to the Fiji Island
pages. |

| - That
old musical tells the story of “moving west,” to the new frontier.
Back then it was California. Horace Greeley’s “go west” advice still stands
good, but the frontier has moved decidedly more west. These days, “Tonga
or Bust” is the new call to freedom. Folks are painting their wagons (that
would be shipping containers today) and heading to the Southern Hemisphere.
Tonga is indeed the new and perhaps last frontier. To find it, you continue
going west from California, and a little south, too. At about where you
begin to go east again, stop there. That will be the South Pacific. |

spread like sea shells in a galaxy of South Pacific. Well, not actually
"south" South Pacific, the Marshall Islands are more near-equator, half-way
between Hawaii and Borneo, both in their geographic location, and in their
geo-political mindset. |

is a series of Islands situated between Australia and Fiji. Flying time
from New Zealand and Australia is less than 3 hours on a late model Boeing
737’s flown and maintained by expats. Flying time to Fiji or New Caledonia

and the internet service extends to broadband. Your GSM mobile phone should
“roam” here. |
