Atlanta
restaurant brokers Eric and Robin Gagnon recently traveled to St. Maarten
to relax on the white sandy beaches and enjoy the ocean breezes.
Ever watchful of the restaurant industry, they were surprised at the number
of U.S., Canadian, French and English natives they observed who had relocated
to this tropical island to serve up their own version of cheeseburgers
in paradise. This dynamic duo of restaurant brokerage were recently introduced
to the meaning of the word ‘expat” when they subscribed to EscapeArtist’s
world renowned ezine, Escape From America. To the Gagnon’s, the word ‘expat’
sounded a bit nefarious and they thought that ‘expats” might refer to people
who were on the run, but instead, they learned that ‘expat’ is a term used
for people pursuing a dream of living outside of their native country and
realizing what we call an “Escapeartist Dream.” The Gagnon’s recent trip
to St. Maarten opened their eyes to the awesome opportunity to help people
with their restaurant and business acquisitions internationally, and they
have decided to realize their Escapeartist Dream by partnering with the
largest website in the world for international living.. - Atlanta

The
ABC Islands: Dutch, Caribbean and Oh So Different, Part 1
- ABC, it’s easy as one two three, do-ray-me baby, ABC….can’t help
but hum that great Jackson 5 ditty when I think about the ABC Islands of
the Lesser Antilles. ABC is not only the first three letters of the alphabet
it is also an acronym for a Dutch island chain lying low, low, low at the
bottom part of the Caribbean – so low in fact that this group is about
17 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The ABC Islands are commonly
known by their individual island names of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao and
are part of an island group known as the Netherlands Antilles, part of
the Netherlands colonial rule. This group includes the islands of Sint
Maarten (which shares its island with French St. Martin), Saba and Sint
Eustatius (also known as Statia). However, Aruba actually became independent
of the Netherlands Antilles in 1986 and maintains cordial relations with
their former colonial ruler.

Living
and Working on St.Maarten/St.Martin - By Jim Braye
- Being able to live and work on the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin for
over ten years gave me a great appreciation for this small (37 sq. miles)
Caribbean island. People come to St. Maarten/St. Martin for many different
reasons. For me it was a chance to live the adventurous type of Caribbean
lifestyle that most people only read about in books. I felt like I was
stepping into one of Herman Wouk’s or Jimmy Buffett’s books about adventure
in the Caribbean. One of the great things about the island is that it is
so multicultural. You can find people from every corner of the planet living
on St. Maarten/St. Martin. There are approximately eighty different nationalities
living and working together on the island.

Saba
- The Unspoiled Queen - By Leilani Gerstel
- The Kingdom of the Netherlands comprises three entities: Holland, the
Netherlands Antilles (Saba, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Bonaire, and Curaçao),
and Aruba. The most unique of these islands is Saba. Saba's local administration
supervises internal affairs and has recently voted to have a direct representative
in Holland. Saba was created in a volcanic eruption. Saba’s history is
one that stems from the sea that created its tough, resolute people…the
ones that existed in the real Saba, the one that existed before rum punches
or T-shirt shops. Saba was born of the violence of the sea and settled
even though living there should have been impossible. It was a Saba of
struggle, of faith. Once settled (by Dutch, English and Scots), its population
survived because of and in spite of the sea. Life was simple: If it could
not be grown on the island, it had to come in by boat and be hauled up
long ladders. Saban’s had to be tough.

Sint
Maarten/Saint Martin – The Friendly Island
- France and the Netherlands have shared this haven of sand, sea and sun
peacefully for more than three centuries. The Dutch call it Sint Maarten
and on the French side the signs say Saint Martin. Not that there is a
particularly obvious separation. You can drive, or walk, over a border
untended and unmarked except for a sign of welcome to one country or the
other. St. Maarten/St. Martin is the smallest island in the world to be
shared by two sovereign powers and it has been that way since 1648 when
France and the Netherlands signed a partition treaty. However, over the
years people of many different nationalities have made their home on the
island and have influenced its development. Many languages can be heard
but English is almost universal. Nevertheless, there is a distinctly different
“feel” to each side of the island, which makes for added interest.

Active
Sint Maarten, Dynamic Saint-Martin by Marie Lee
- Dutch Sint Maarten borders the French overseas collective or territory
of Saint-Martin, which occupies the northern half of the island. The capital
of French Saint Martin is Marigot and the capital of Sint Maarten is Philipsburg.
St. Maarten is rapidly becoming the Eastern Caribbean's next St. Thomas
-- its duty-free shopping rivals, if not exceeds, that of that U.S. Virgin
Island -- and, increasingly, cruise lines are calling with their biggest,
post-Panamax ships (on a recent spring trip we estimated there were six
ships carrying about 18,000 passengers). That's both good news and bad
news for this unique port of call, which, along with neighboring St. Martin,
is the world's smallest island inhabited by two countries. St. Maarten
is, of course, governed by the Netherlands Antilles while St. Martin is
part of the French West Indies. What's particularly fun is that barring
huge traffic jams, you can easily swing back and forth from the Dutch to
the French sides, and enjoy the best of both.

Saba
World Heritage Status Report By L.L. Nazer-Basuil
- Saba’s history of occupation and settlement is as diverse as its natural
environment. Europeans, believed to have been of Scottish Presbyterian
origin, started arriving in the early 17th century at this uninhabited
island. Records show that in 1665 there were 54 white settlers on the island
and by 1715 their numbers had swelled to 336 with the addition of 176 black
slaves. The next milestone was the end of slavery in 1863 when records
show the white population at 1,099 with 708 free colored people. The year
1915 saw the population at its maximum at almost 2,500. Each subsequent
year showed a decline due to economic emigration to the oil refineries
of nearby Aruba and Curacao. Between 1920 and 1930 Saba became known as
the "Island of Women" as the shrinking population comprised mostly females
who upheld the island's economy by making lace. In 1987 its total population
stood at 1,130, currently it is just under 2,000.

The
Road; An Engineering Marvel Tribute to the Road Builders of Saba By Will
Johnson - The smallest island (five
square miles) in the Netherlands Antilles, Saba is primarily a dormant
volcano covered in rain forest. Saba is actually the tip of a submerged,
extinct volcano, with steep underwater cliffs that are famous for extraordinary,
unspoiled scuba diving. Saba can best be summarized as a volcanic rock,
full of steep climbs, four colorful small villages, a permanent population
of about 1,500 people, world class diving, great hiking, and tranquility.
After that, the only thing left for anyone to talk about is The Road, a
true monument to creative engineering. The Road and the David & Goliath
effort involved in its construction is the conversational diamond around
which every taxi driver builds his tour. This single winding road that
gets you around to most all. The Road was laid by hand, and runs from the
airport at Hell’s Gate to the harbor at Fort Bay. There are no names at
all for any of the narrow, windy tributary streets in the tiny hamlets
of The Bottom (Saba’s capital), St. John’s, Hell’s Gate or Windwardside,
the second largest of Saba’s four villages. The Road is one of the best
maintained highways on the planet…the entire nine-mile length of The Road
is swept every day – by hand.

Two
Nations in Harmony by Raquel B. Tejeda - Considering
that not much is in harmony in today’s world, it is a delight to visit
a tiny island that is shared in such harmony by two nations – in this case
Sint Maarten, the Dutch side and Saint Martin, the French side. It
is only 37 square miles, but two nations and over 80 nationalities happily
get along in peace and harmony. The smallest island in the world ever to
have been partitioned between two different nations, Saint-Martin and Sint
Maarten, has been shared by the French and the Dutch in a spirit of neighborly
cooperation and mutual friendship for almost 350 years. The border is almost
imperceptible and people cross back and forth without ever realizing they
are entering a new country. There are four boundaries - Belle Vue / Cole
Bay, French Quarter / Dutch Quarter, Low Lands / Copecoy and Oyster Pond,
testifying to centuries of peaceful cohabitation and the treaty that made
the arrangement possible.

Gaviota,
The Last Cowgirl in Cuba by Kirk Stephan
- I become even more schitzy than usual when I visit Cuba. Comparing the
resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle
society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last
trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first
inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence
of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport
in Cancun. I’d been used to getting some great photos of folk’s faces amidst
the air-conditioning steam that shot out of vents into the cabin just as
the Russian jets of Cubana Airline would leave the runway. Alas, no more
excitement here; Cuba has gone “Euro” with the acquisition of French planes.

Retire
to Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean - Dominica, the
Nature Island of the Caribbean, is an alluring land of majestic, mist-covered
mountains spilling with waterfalls. It is a place where rainforests with
parrots like flying rainbows and orchids growing wild are part of the natural
surroundings. "There is an earthy, beckoning presence to this island where
untamed Nature invites the newcomer to walk in her primal rainforests then
enter the caress of her warm mineral baths... Many souls have lost their
hearts to lesser beauty. The riotous abundance of fertile nature dazzles
the eye and the sweet scent of bay leaf and ginger permeates the air like
a perfume. ´Prepare to fall in love, utterly and completely,´
the Island whispers. Prepare to be unwilling to settle for life anywhere
but on this living island."
