With lush, green mountains …long beaches with turquoise waters …and lively little towns in between, the Dominican Republic is one of our favorite Caribbean Hideaways - When Columbus spotted the coral-rimmed Dominican Republic, he proclaimed, “This is the fairest land under Heaven.” We have to agree. The Dominican Republic is home to the highest mountain range in the entire Caribbean and offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Yet it may be the least-expensive island in the Caribbean when it comes to real estate and cost of living. The northern coast of the DR has long been the most popular spot on the island for tourists, as well as for foreigners looking to buy property. Visitors to this area usually fly into the international airport at Puerto Plata. The town itself, which owes its name (“silver port” in English) to Christopher Columbus (who discovered the island in 1492), is crowded and bustling.Motorbikes are ubiquitous, darting in and out and around. - Cigars and rum in the fairest land under Heaven

Nomading in the Caribbean - In many of us, the Caribbean stirs up fantasies of coconuts, beaches, hammocks, Mai-Tais and pirates! That is likely what you will encounter there, right down to the pirates, but particularly the Mai-Tais and beaches. While most people only consider this region in terms of those few lovely islands that you see in Islands Magazine, with sun bronzed turbo vixens in minikinis relaxing on the beaches while the handsome 6 pack adorned male models are frolicking in the surf, there is actually a bit more to it than that. The official Caribbean Sea extends from the Yucatan Peninsula to Cuba and on past the Windward and Leeward Islands to Venezuela, including not just the islands but the entire coastline of Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, right back to the Yucatan. It covers an impressive 1,063,000 square miles, but only 92,541 sq mi of that are on land, a mere 8.7%, and it is populated by 36,320,000 people of Afro-Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean, Amerindian of the Arawak, Carib and Tainos tribes, as well as quite a number of European and Asian descendants and migrants, leading to an average population density of a whopping 392 people crowding onto 1 square mile. Ecuador vs The Caribbean: Which is Right for You? - In 2009 I lived in the Dominican Republic, a small nation in the Caribbean, for 6 months. But since 2005 I have been living on and off in Ecuador. I love both places, but even though they may seem similar on the surface, they are very different. Both with their pros and cons, you just have to pick your poison, like picking between a blond and brunette.  Weather: The Dominican wins. In the Dominican Republic, the weather is hotter, but not so humid, 82-90 F year round. On the Ecuador coast it is a little cooler (72-82 F) and more cloudy. If you want year round skin torching sun, the Dominican is for you. Beaches: The Dominican wins. The Dominican has some picture perfect, turquoise water, snow-white sand beaches typical to any Caribbean postcard you may have seen. Ecuador has more California style beaches with cliffs, golden sand and darker, murkier water  MORE >>>
Video Of The Dominican Republic on EscapeArtist - The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,442 square kilometres (18,704 sq mi) and an estimated 10 million people. Inhabited by Taínos since the seventh century, the territory of the Dominican Republic was reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. In Santo Domingo stand, among other firsts in the Americas, the first university, cathedral, and castle, the latter two in the Ciudad Colonial area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bicknell's thrush is just one of 300 species of migratory birds that travel through the Dominican Republic. If you have ever thought abour watching birds for a hobby, then it is an excellent relaxing passtime, that also has its rewarding and exciting moments when you catch a glimpse of one of the rarer species to be found on the Isle of Hispaniola. Private Trust Banking – 21st Century Offshore Banking- Imagine the setting: A beautiful tropical island, no clouds in the sky and palm trees gently swaying in the breeze.  Wealthy, well dressed people are sipping an exotic cocktail in the shade, their luxury yachts nestling in the harbor. An expensive car pulls up and a man with a white suit steps out with a large suitcase which he proceeds to take into the bank opposite the sidewalk. The scene cuts to the manager´s office where the well-dressed man clicks open the case to reveal stacks of 100 dollar bills …. A sly smile creeps across the manager´s face ….. A good setting for a 007 movie maybe, as well as being many people´s image for how the offshore banking industry works. However, that particular scenario does not exist – indeed it never has and the fact that it remains a popular idea in Hollywood movies and works of fiction only goes to prove how poor general understanding of the offshore industry actually is. Buying a Property in The North Coast of the Dominican Republic Online - ‘The North Coast of the Dominican Republic is called the Amber Coast, because of its rich deposits of semi-precious amber. This is where Columbus landed on his first voyage of discovery. It is comprised of an assortment of beach towns, resorts and communities, nestled between the Atlantic and a chain of majestic coastal mountains. Puerto Plata is the largest city. About 25 km east of Puerto Plata is Sosua, which was originally settled by Jewish refugees in the early 1940’s. Here you will find a number of types of accommodation, everything from a basic room to luxurious villas, to all-inclusive resorts, as well as many restaurants, bars and discos. One of the main attractions here is Sosua Beach, a 1/2 km of beach in a small cove with soft white sand and clear turquoise waters, surrounded by high coral cliffs. Many snorkeling and diving excursions take place in this area. There is also a large vendors market behind the beach where you can bargain for souvenirs’.
Becoming a Resident Of The Dominican Republic - The cost of living in Thailand is much lower than in the USA or Europe. It is possible to get by on a budget of $10 but these tight-wad tips on how to live cheaply in Thailand will make your money go much further and you might even be able to live on less than $10 a day. Plan Your Visit According to the Season – The low season in Thailand is between May and November and is notably cheaper than high season.  Everything related to tourism is heavily discounted and so you will pay much less for rooms, food and vehicle rental. Another off season benefit is that there are fewer tourists which means your dollars will be heavily competed for and you can expect a warmer welcome and a higher level of personal service.
Back Door Tax Free Offshore Investing In The Dominican Republic - Clients often ask us, "Is it true. Is it really possible to invest tax free with an offshore account"? Yes, It is true.  But there are some things you need to be aware of when contemplating your investment strategy. For example, most people do not know that US brokerage accounts titled in the name of a foreign person or entity are exempt from capital gains.  As a result, there is no "Tefra" or back-up with- holding on profitable stock trades.  Clients of course are required to complete a W-8 form, stating it is a foreign account in order to take advantage of this (if the account is titled directly in the name of offshore structure or foreign client).  However, while the US is a good place to do your stock investing, it is not advisable for "fixed income" investments.  Fixed income investments would include any type of interest bearing investment, such as Bonds, Bank Certificates of Deposit, Bank Savings Accounts or Commercial Paper.
Buying Real Estate In The Dominican Republic - Changes For The Better In The DR - The Dominican Republic is one of the only places I have visited where you have to pay for your tourist visa. You stand in a line with other foreigners, pay $10 for your visa, and then stand in another line for immigration. Luckily—besides the buffet line at my hotels—this was the only time I would be kept waiting. For the local poor people, though, I was to discover that it is a country of queues. In every sizable town we passed through, people were waiting in lines, holding propane tanks in the hopes they would be one of the lucky few who would have them filled that day. It seems the Dominican government had neglected to pay the Venezuelan government for the gas the latter country has been selling them. No gas, no cooking!
Dominican Domesticity - Come Live the Latin Life in Punta Perla ~ As the second largest nation in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola and is roughly the size of Maryland, US.  Columbus discovered the island in 1492 looking for a seaway to India. In fact, he like it so much, he decided to stay! The odd thing is, Europeans have been coming ever since, but with less than 20% of the tourists coming from the US, it remains an undiscovered “secret” for Americans.  The island is larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, all the Virgin Islands and the entire French West Indies combined and is generally regarded as very safe with crimes against tourists rarely reported.  The September 21, 1998 issue of Forbes Magazine said, “The Dominican Republic set out in the early 1990’s to remake itself, reform its government, modernize its institutions and open its economy.
Finding Work in The Dominican Republic  - Where can I find work? Though finding work may seem a difficult task, it is possible to be successful since Dominican employers have a flexible attitude about hiring foreigners who demonstrate particular skills. Experience shows you may eventually find work, or found your own business once you have explored the field for several months. Even if you do not need the money, look for a job. There is no better way to inmerse yourself in the local culture and enhance your stay here.  Is Spanish necessary to get a job? It is quite possible to obtain work without knowing Spanish. International businesses and the tourist industry need people with the ability to speak many different languages:Including Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and so on.
Life In A Dominican Beach Town - An American In The Dominican Republic - At 6 in the morning, I take my steaming cup of strong Dominican café con leche out to the porch and survey the sea. I have another hour and half before the local commuter traffic, on scooters, quads, pick-ups and buses, starts the parade on the paved beach road in front of the house. It is a wonderful quiet time, as I watch the sea. My awesome appreciation for it is only matched by my daily amazement at the number of times that the mosquitos have bitten me during the night. They are a different sort than in the States, quietier, more laid back, dancing the bachante rather than dive bombing and singing rather sweetly. It is hard to begrudge them a few drops of blood. For the past three months, the sea has been boiling, rolling and crashing over the reef, changing color from deep blue to putty-colored green with the churned up sand.
Life In The Dominican Republic - Quite A Change After The UK!  Part I - I moved to the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2001. My wife and I had been considering the possibility of working away from our home country for some time. Our lives changed dramatically after I saw an advertisement in a professional journal.  It had very little detail save a line drawing of a palm tree, and, if memory serves me, text that said, “Would you like to work in the Caribbean for three years for a major company, with a guaranteed return to the UK at the end?   Call this number…” As you will have guessed, I called the number and got the job.In the space of a few months I (with family in hot pursuit) changed employer, job, country, language and culture. No doubt the psychiatrists should have seen us regularly since then, but the move has provided just what we had hoped and expected – a wild mix of amazing experiences lashed with the seasoning ofs frustrations and heartache that everyone says are par for the course of the expatriate life.

Life In The Dominican Republic - Six Months Down -  It’s the end of my six-month’s trial. I have already postponed my return trip to the States once but I leave in two weeks, to tie up loose ends, see friends and family, and shop. I am delighted with my reluctance to leave. Although I told everyone that I was definitely moving here, to the Dominican Republic, I reserved in my mind the right to fail. I had left home before, like an eight-year old with my belongings wrapped in a kerchief on a stick, only to return for dinner, or rather within a year. But I know that this time, I have succeeded. I have made a life for myself here.
Plastic Surgery In The Dominican Republic - Inexpensive And Excellent - To the uninitiated, the idea of having cosmetic surgery in a small Caribbean country is ‘frightening’ to say the least.  Commonly one would envision a Hollywood “third world” type of scene…of hospitals with narrow, dimly lit hallways and filth encrusted walls; maybe a chicken pecking around in the corner here and there. What surprises many and shocks most is the fact that in my own experience nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, my discovery of the high-quality, low-priced plastic surgery available in the Dominican Republic was absolutely life changing! In 2001, I came to the Dominican Republic with my fiancé, who was born in DR but had spent the most recent 22 years of his life in the US.   I had battled with a weight problem for years, and in one of my moments of diet-induced angst he confided in me that one of his cousins had liposuction eight years earlier in the Dominican Republic and had never gained back a pound!  I was thrilled at the idea, but what really convinced me to take a chance was when I found out the price…50-70% less than it would cost me in the US!
List Of Offshore Banks - An offshore bank is defined by its location, or 'jurisdiction'. An offshore bank is usually located outside of the depositors country of residence, typically within a jurisdiction that levies very low taxes, or no taxes at all.  Each jurisdiction varies in its degree of taxation, its degree of privacy, and its services. Offshore banks located in politically and economically stable jurisdictions provide a safe-haven for assets that may be at risk in the nation in which the investor lives and holds residency.
Expat Taxes - Offshore Tax Information - Foreign Earned Income - Individuals have been leaving their own land to seek opportunities elsewhere since the dawn of mankind. But it has only been since the development of the modern nation-state, and its taxation of the worldwide income of its citizen-residents, that expatriation has taken on significant tax consequences. Escapeartist has hatched a new partnership with Global Wealth Protection that will set the standard for authoritative information on Asset Protection, International Banking and Wealth Management.
