When we started EscapeArtist the British Virgin Islands (BVI) was an oft mentioned location for expat living and offshore banking.  That was then; this now, and now things are different.  Since Tony Blaire laid down with George W. Bush (who the USA has not yet sent to the Hague) Blaire, in the best form of immitation, betrayed the British people.  Now thanks to these blood-suckers, there is nothing special left about the BVI as an offshore haven, and the only ones who care to live there are for the most part Brits. We are no longer inundated with articles nor resources for the BVI, but with that said we should mention some vital facts, and that is that the BVI is exceptionally beautful and is a great place to live.  There is also some indication that the BVI is a good destination for medical tourism.  Okay, we get an occasional real estate listing for the BVI, and we do have some articles about the BVI and some resources, so we keep this page. If you know about living and investing in the BVI, write for us, if you care to partner with us, do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you. Privileged Living: Sanctuaries of the BVI  -  The Beef Island Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport was rebuilt in 2002. It now has a new sleek passenger terminal building of 46,000 square feet, an extended runway of approximately 4,700ft. A fire station and an air control tower and administration, and finally provision for re-fuelling have made a tremendous difference to air access to the BVI.  The airport is just twenty minutes from the capital of the BVI, Road Town, and a one minute taxi ride to many of the ferry terminals for the outer resort islands like Peter, Necker, Virgin Gorda and Guana. The airport runways and apron are a sort of up market parking lot with priceless views for a number of private jets and charter helicopters. These elite aircraft ferry people discreetly in and out of the islands against the breathtaking backdrop of the ocean and Guana and Scrub Islands.
Maintaining Good Health and Upgrading Wellbeing - A review of Healthcare in the BVI - The territory of the British Virgin Islands is home to over 27,000 people, but during the year it is the host to thousands of visitors who come to enjoy our beautiful islands, sailing, diving, vacationing in our hotels, inns and villas, and visiting on cruise ships. The government, private and voluntary organisations of our small country are not only responsible for the care of the residents, but also of our visitors, visitors who may, quite unexpectedly, suffer life-threatening or crippling accidents or medical emergencies, as well as the minor injuries and loss of pills and medications that are a normal part of life. Cuba -The Next Expat Property Hotspot? - There are countless articles floating around about Cuba's potential to become the next property hotspot - some imply that lifting travel restrictions on American tourists will kick start a rise in property prices as they'll fall for Havana's faded charms, or the beautiful Caribbean beaches, and want a piece for themselves - so what's the reality? Two hurdles stand in the way of a real estate boom in Cuba (three if you include the need for a stable, democratically elected government). Allowing American tourists in won't make a difference to the country's property market. In fact, tourist numbers hit an all-time high this year. This country's a mainstream destination for Canadians and Europeans. Cuba received more than a million tourists in the first four months of 2010. That's double the number during the same period in 2009. Tourism minister Manuel Marrero released the figures at a tourism fair in Havana this month. He also spoke about government plans to boost real estate development, and specifically tourism amenities--marinas, spas, and golf courses.
A Tale of Two T'ings: Money and Time – Buying Property in the B.V.I. By A.J. Edwards - So you think that you would like to relocate and buy a home in in the British Virgin Islands? There is an old saying: If you need to ask the price of a fancy item, you can’t afford it! There is a lot of truth in this and it can be applied to the situation in the British Virgin Islands, particularly with respect to buying property. In the BVI, if you need to ask the price of a house here, you can’t afford it, and if you want to know how long the process will take, you can’t spare the time! Having decided that all of the above do not apply, the first step is to find a suitable property. One way is to take a vacation and simply look around, but that is not likely to help, since most of the desirable properties are fairly well off the beaten track on Tortola. And then there are several developments on some of the smaller islands, such as Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke that you just cannot get to without prior arrangements and a boat or a plane. Moreover, sometimes you can get lucky for a cool twenty or thirty million and actually find a complete private island on the market. But let's keep our feet on the ground.
Chosen the British Virgin Islands? Now Choose your Charter Boat. by Kate Johnston - So you’ve chosen the BVI? It can’t have been a difficult decision - picture perfect beaches, crystal clear waters and a laid back lifestyle. This area is world renowned for its near perfect sailing conditions – steady winds, warm waters and an abundance of secluded islands to hop between. So the obvious choice is to explore under sail, but choosing who to charter with isn’t always so simple. Welcome to one of the finest and most protected sailing areas on the planet. The Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles is a well-known and much-loved ‘sailor's playground’. It's the ultimate Caribbean yachting destination for those who know how to sail and anyone who has yet to try.
Gaviota, The Last Cowgirl in Cuba by Kirk Stephan  - I become even more schitzy than usual when I visit Cuba. Comparing the resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport in Cancun. I’d been used to getting some great photos of folk’s faces amidst the air-conditioning steam that shot out of vents into the cabin just as the Russian jets of Cubana Airline would leave the runway. Alas, no more excitement here; Cuba has gone “Euro” with the acquisition of French planes.
Ecuador vs The Caribbean: Which is Right for You? - In 2009 I lived in the Dominican Republic, a small nation in the Caribbean, for 6 months. But since 2005 I have been living on and off in Ecuador. I love both places, but even though they may seem similar on the surface, they are very different. Both with their pros and cons, you just have to pick your poison, like picking between a blond and brunette. Here is how they compare: Costs: Ecuador wins. Ecuador food, housing, public transport, healthcare and real estate are all cheaper. The only thing that is cheaper in the Dominican are the flights from the US. Food: Ecuador wins. Dominican food tends to be greasy, fatty and lacks much variety. Ecuador food is a delicious mix of seafoods, local fruits and veggies, soups and more. All natural.
Some important resources for The BVI
British Virgin Islands Country Specific Information - Offers travel information including Background Notes, entry and exit requirements, safety and security, crime, health and transport. The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a British overseas territory, part of the British West Indies, lying about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico. There are about 50 islands in the BVI, many of which are uninhabited. Tortola is the main island, other islands include Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada. Tourist facilities are widely available. Read the Department of State Background Notes on the United Kingdom for additional information.
CIA - The World Factbook: The British Virgin Islands  - Features map and brief descriptions of the geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military and more. First inhabited by Arawak and later by Carib Indians, the Virgin Islands were settled by the Dutch in 1648 and then annexed by the English in 1672. The islands were part of the British colony of the Leeward Islands from 1872-1960; they were granted autonomy in 1967. The economy is closely tied to the larger and more populous US Virgin Islands to the west; the US dollar is the legal currency.
BBC News - Regions and territories: British Virgin Islands - Named by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the islands were settled by the Dutch until 1666. The main island of Tortola was annexed by the Leeward Islands governor in 1672. The BVI as a whole became part of Britain's Leeward Islands colony in 1872. The Leewards were administered under a federal system until 1956. After the Leewards had been de-federated, the BVI were granted separate colony status in 1960 and were awarded a limited degree of self-rule in 1967. Subsequent legislative amendments over the next few decades gradually extended the islands' autonomy.

Living in Belize – Experiencing the Countrye  - Some questions about Belize just need to be answered by your own visit to the country.  You can read all you want about a place but you really won’t know how you will feel about moving there until you experience some things yourself.  Like I said in the introduction to this series, I moved to Belize without having visited and ended up loving it but there are people who have visited Belize and told me that they hated it so it’s all about the personal experience.  In this post I want to focus on why you will want to visit Belize before you really make your mind up about moving there. Once you are in Belize get ready to learn and experience as much as you can.  Put yourself in situations that you would if you were living there rather than just traveling.  You may already have an idea of what district within Belize you want to focus on but if you do not then let’s go over those first.  I will touch on the most popular expat destinations so please keep in mind that there are other locations that are home to expats as well.
New and Exciting Expat Destination - Hopes for Improved Relations between Cuba and the USA - Hopes are rising for reconciliation between Cuba and the USA following the election of Barack Obama as president. The main obstacles to restoring relations are that either the USA would have to drop demands for democracy on the island, or Cuba would have to accept and implement them. Both are equally unlikely scenarios with no obvious middle ground on which to base a compromise. During the presidential election campaign Obama stated that the current embargo would remain in place to be used as a bargaining chip to bring about democratic change in Cuba. However, many political experts suggest that a greater impact could be achieved by ending the embargo and sanctions which are largely blamed by the Government to explain the island´s poverty and hardships the people suffer. Lifting the restrictions would give the population the opportunity to judge the leaders on their own merits.
