A
towering spine of ancient reef defines 80-mile Long Island, Bahamas and
gives it two distinct personalities: the dramatic cliffs and caves
of the east coast that protect the island from the crashing Atlantic waves,
and the soft sand leeside which slides smoothly into the aquamarine waters
of the Bahamas Bank. It’s the stunning contrast of landscape that makes
many people say that Long Island is one of the most picturesque islands
in The Bahamas. Home to one of the oldest dive operations in The Bahamas,
Long Island has numerous shallow and deep dive sites, but is best known
for Dean’s Blue Hole, the deepest recorded blue hole in The Bahamas (more
than 600 feet). On the leeward side within the Deadman's Cay settlement,
Buttonwood Richville is a new development offering 1/2 acre plots and upwards.
These are all flat and excellent for building single or double storey homes.
There are 11 lots directly onto the water which have fantastic views over
the sea and onto the surrounding cays. Starting at $35,000 with just a
$5,000 deposit." ~ Two

Bahamas
is a tax shelter haven. It's an international marketplace after all,
and there are plenty of nations willing to welcome expatriates fed up with
Uncle Sam. Countries like the Bahamas make tax haven status an integral
part of their marketing — relocate to Nassau, and you'll fear no tax man.
That's because, for Bahamians and resident aliens there are no taxes on
personal income, capital gains, inheritance or gifts.

So,
You Want To Move To The Bahamas - Through The Eyes Of A Transplanted American
- The Bahamian people
have their own Lingo, far from the American slang I was used to. The first
several months, I found myself constantly asking my wife, “What did he
say, or what does that mean”? I have compiled a list of the common phrases
or lingo to assist you while conversing with a Bahamian. Shopping for groceries
in the Bahamas is also a unique experience. The prices are high and quite
often the item you thought would be simple to acquire may take several
different stores to find. I have included a comparison list of common items.
Also included in this E-book is a collection of my favorite Authentic Bahamian
Recipes which were prepared by my new family members.

The
Bahamas by Mailboat . . .
Few people who visit the Bahamas ever hear of Potter’s Cay, though many
pass within a few yards of it each time that they are whisked off Paradise
Island in one of those ridiculous white stretch limos that are so popular
in Nassau. Where Paradise Island is fabricated Caribbean perfection — massive
casino, glitz and high-rise hotels — Potter’s Cay is its alter-ego, a shabby
looking area of working docks beneath the bridge. Potter’s Quay is the
main mail-boat dock that links the central Bahamian island of New Providence,
where the capital Nassau is situated, to all the Out Islands, the literally
hundreds of islands, ribbons of rock and sandbars spread over 100,000 square
miles of the spectacularly blue Bahamian sea. After Nassau it is a reminder
that real West Indian life does exist in the Bahamas after all.

|
The
Lost Continent Found on Paradise Island -
Paradise
Island is a small spit of Bahamian earth in Nassau Harbor connected to
the mainland of New Providence by two entry and exit bridges vaulting pastel
condos, resorts, and marinas. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is also
the common name for all of New Providence. People say they’ll retire to
Nassau; students come to Nassau to party and couples are wed here. The
broader reality, imbued with the politics which has placed the Bahamas
at the top of the Caribbean ladder of luxury, is hidden in the colonial
homes fronted by rolling lawns or private beaches, in the new developments
from Sandyport to Love Beach and Old Fort Bay. The indigenous people
live on the outskirts of downtown Nassau, expanding outward toward the
interior of New Providence, in small cement or stucco houses, some with
home businesses proffering family clothing or barbershop services.

Buying
a Property in the Caribbean Online
- Sitting in my dining room with the first cup of coffee of the day I look
at the pictures mounted on the wall by the table. Six shots of our vacation
back in November 2006 to Loreto, Baja California, looking out over the
Sea of Cortez. The fishing boat we took to our own little island with lunch
caught fresh from the crystal clear waters, the tree lined streets, the
palapa roofed beach hut, the golden red sunset. Now just distant memories
but also a reminder during the dark, cold days of winter just what awaits
my wife and me when we retire. A year round warm climate and spectacular
scenery. It’s just that it will not be to Loreto, Baja California that
we will be moving to. Yes, we had a fantastic vacation, great hospitality
at the bed and breakfast we stayed at, lovely weather, awesome scenery
and views. The thing that put us off was that we realized having viewed
a number of plots of land in and around Loreto we felt that eventually
it would become just another American ‘sub-division’, albeit with a little
more sunshine. Now let me explain something here. I am English, my wife
is American, a native of Sherwood, North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was
she who made the comment about the town of Loreto becoming a ‘sub division’.
This is what put us off buying in Loreto:

Things
Are Better On Grand Bahama - Living and Investing in the Caribbean
- Living and investing in the Bahamas is made a lot easier when you have
someone who knows the ropes. Jerry Ritter knows the ropes better than anyone
we know. He tells us about the Grand Bahamas. It comes as a surprise to
some that the Bahamas actually consist of over 700 islands. Some of them
are gems. If we lived there and had a boat we could see them all -- one
day at a time. There are four first-class marinas and many waterways to
explore including the Grand Bahama canal which bisects the island and offers
direct access to the Abacos to the NE. To travel around the world in minutes,
see Freeport's International Bazaar. This collection of 80 shops and restaurants
features virtual-reality settings in Paris, Spain, the Greek islands, Denmark,
Hong Kong and about 10 other exotic locales. Nearby Lucaya boasts Port
Lucaya Marketplace, a waterfront six-acre shopping, dining and entertainment
complex with island motif and a bandstand at Count Basie Square.
The legendaryjazz pianist built a home at Freeport. Entertainment includes
jazz, rythym and blues, limbo, raggae, fire dancers and more.

The
US Virgin Islands have become a popular destination for retirees
- The US Virgin Islands have become a popular destination for retirees,
second homeowners and anyone aspiring to live a better quality of life.
In the Virgin Islands you can live the island life while still being protected
by US laws, government and a stable economy. You can easily work,
start a business or buy real estate just like in the States -- transacting
in English and using the US dollar. Move to paradise without being a millionaire.
If you’re reading this you have probably daydreamed of leaving the mainland
and living the “island life.” What’s stopping you from giving up
the daily grind and starting over in an exotic destination? Do you
have concerns about investing in a risky foreign market? Are you
unsure of how you’d support yourself financially? Are you unwilling
to give up the modern conveniences you are accustomed to?

The
Cost of Living in Belize -
Is Belize an expensive country for an expatriate? That question obviously
does not have a singular answer. It depends on a number of factors, and
with the risk of sounding like a Belizean politician who never gives a
straight answer I will try to shed some light on the issue of the cost
of living for expatriates in Belize (all prices in US$). In no particular
order, I would say it depends on the following factors: 1] Where you live:
On the islands like San Pedro and Caye Caulker all prices are at least
20% higher than on the mainland. 2] Your life style and budget: Being an
American diplomat working for Uncle Sam who is willing to pay $5,000 for
your monthly house rental is not the same as being a retired couple with
a modest pension. A decent mid-sized house can be rented for one tenth
this amount, between $500 and $1,000. If you leave your air-conditioning
on day and night you’ll have a bill of over $1,000 at the end of the month.
We pay around $125 per month for electricity, using mainly fans and one
hour max of AC per day. 3] The countries to which you’re comparing Belize:
The Belize dollar is linked to the US dollar 2:1 and with the high-valued
Euro, Europeans find it cheaper than most Americans. For sure Belize is
more expensive than its neighboring countries, Mexico and Guatemala. But
let me tell you about the prices . . .
