In
St. Kitts, some of the land for sale on the southern side of the island
and the arid eastern end is in private hands,
and though difficult to find is available to non-nationals. The rest of
it is government owned and almost impossible to buy in a normal life time!
Governments move in inexplicably slow time dimensions and in even more
mysterious marketing realms. For example, advertising half acre plots at
$40,000 a piece through SKY TV in the UK only. In Nevis, pretty much all
the land is in the hands of private owners, and some of the larger homes
and commercial properties are owned by expatriates from all over the world.
Two tiny countries, two proud peoples, and one unique federation makes
St.Kitts and Nevis a very strong player among the Eastern Caribbean countries.
Separated by a five mile strip of sea, and linked by ferries from the centre
of Basseterre in St. Kitts to the centre of Charlestown in Nevis, there
are many differences. Many of them to do with the rules and some of the
customs governing the purchase of land and property for both non-nationals
and nationals. - Federated

Colours: Bold and Vivid as its Culture By Vida Rawlins
- There is nothing delicate here in St Kitts. It is all deliberate. Colour
rules man! I made the mistake of inviting a neighbour into my home. I thought
my colour scheme was sophisticated, taste-full, ‘Albino White’, understated.
I was practiced in the art of décor etiquette. I had listened to
Anne Maurice of the House Doctor fame. My home was impersonal, neutral
with as little of ‘me’ reflected in it. It was, as it were, a place where
anyone could see themselves in. My visiting neighbour asked me if I didn’t
like colour? I said to her “what do you mean… some of my best friends are
black” … “no” she replied “I mean you don’t like colours for your curtain
or on your walls”? I said “oh!” I was wary of colour. I stayed far away
from it. Even when colour became the ‘in thing’ during the 90’s, when walls
were being washed down in ‘Bull’s Blood’ reds and ‘Vegetarian’ greens.
I stood cross in hand, garlic about my neck, a single silver bullet. I
never wanted, ever, to be associated with the crassness of ‘culture’. ‘I
was educated me’, ‘I was ‘so-phis-ti-cated’; ‘I’d been to Leeds’. I had
Irrational Chromatic Dysfunction.

Nevis
the Queen - A sweet Cultural Heritage By Marlene L. Phillips
- The “Moco Jumbie” originates from West Africa and acts as an intermediary
between living people and their ancestors. They stand on six foot stilts,
which allow them to see both the present and future of the community and
its inhabitants. They dress in colourful garments (pointed hat, dress and
long pants) and dance to the rhythm of the tambourine, chopping reel, shack
pan and barhorn. The “Masquerade” once known as the Indians, consists of
a chief and group of twelve to fifteen dancers dressed in brightly coloured
outfits adorned with ribbons, wearing hats with protruding peacock feathers
that represent the pride of African ancestors. They perform dances such
as the “Quadrille” with hints of the “Waltz, which is French and the “Wild
Mas” which is like an African War dance. “Cowboys and Indians” takes its
influence from the popularity of silent western movies. --->

Comprehensively
Educated : Learning in St, Kitts by Vesta I Southwell
- People contemplating relocating their families, businesses or themselves
to paradise in a Caribbean isle, tend to select places that have the most
to offer on many levels. This includes those places that boast a strong
and comprehensive education structure, particularly for parents whose children
are of school age. Nationals of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis who
reside overseas, tend to have ongoing connections with their homeland and
as such, are often perceived as having an easier time adjusting to life
once they return home. Still, for foreigners with no social ties, the process
is not at all daunting. School attendance in the Federation is compulsory
for children aged 5 to 16 and the Ministry of Social Development works
closely with the parents and teachers, to monitor and to assist any student
or family, who is challenged by that law. --->

Real
Estate Investment In The Caribbean - Nevis by Deb Andrews
- Nevis is more than sleepy, its moody! Perhaps its to do with the dominating
mountain, the shapeshifting cloud around the peak, changeless and changing,
the light never the same. Walking up the main street at 8.15 on a Wednesday,
through the banking sector, past First Caribbean (Barclays Bank and CIBC),
Scotia Bank, Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bank of St. Kitts
and Nevis, and then the ferry dock, the various Ministries of Government
and the Cotton Ginnery; I saw two people, and never more than one car on
the road at a time. Between 8.30 and 9, things did liven up, and people
started to arrive opening up offices and shops. Government offices took
a little longer. Nearly all government officials have at least two hats,
interpret that as jobs! The second, and often more lucrative ‘hat', is
as a commercial business owner which, of course through personal necessity,
tends to take priority. So whilst shops, cafes and commercial offices are
opened at 9am, government offices often don't actually open their doors
till after the real small business heart of the town is up and running.

Federated
By Ferries – Part II Nevis – Head In The Clouds ~ by Deb Andrews
- At a time when most other islands in the Leewards had minimal infrastructure,
the first car arrived in Nevis in 1912, and hire cars for visitors were
available by 1927. The first known resort hotel in the Caribbean was built
on the island on the site of the hot Bath Springs. And whilst only first
colonized for commerce in 1625 by Europeans, in 1650 it was the leading
sugar producer in the Leewards and beyond. Nevis cane yielded 24 ounces
of sugar from every gallon of cane juice which was 33% more than any other
island could achieve, and explains why this island was known to grow the
best sugar in the whole of the West Indies, and also why it was the most
prosperous! Cane was grown almost to the top of Nevis mountain, stripping
the rich volcanic soil of its trees and vegetation, all of which after
100 years intense planting lead to a heavy mineral depletion of the soil
and by the 19th century Nevis was no longer able to farm sugar economically.
European plantation owners withdrew and after emancipation Nevisians became
sharecroppers and husbanded the depleted earth as best they could. In more
modern times this has allowed them to survive with a better standard of
living than many of the neighbouring islands who remained in a single crop
economy and did not diversify.

Manchester
to St. Kitts - A Kittitian Returns by Vida Rawlins
- Picture this: I'm sitting on a stationary plane on a Manchester
airstrip one cold January morning. It's about 9.30 and I haven't slept
in 24 hours. I figured it like this, I have 8 hours flight ahead of me,
now I'm not good at sleeping in transit so if I'm tuckered out, I'd sleep,
(waking up for the odd glass of wine and brandy chaser) arriving suitably
refreshed to handle anything and everything Antigua's port authorities
throws at me. It makes sense right? I've been given a window seat and as
I look out onto the asphalt grey barren landscape, I have in mind those
tropical demerara sugar sands and soup bowls of margaritas spilt over cracked
ice and palms that tower like moko-jumbi masqueraders against the powder
blue skies and the sweet heady scent of Niams that flood my senses, carried
on the gentle Caribbean sea breeze. --->

Developments in Nevis - Working with the Community! by Sam Kearns
- Here in the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis, a programme of regeneration
is in progress which aims to bring the islands to the forefront of the
Caribbean tourist industry. In 2005, the Federation faced the mammoth challenge
of dismantling the sugar industry that had held sway for over 400 years.
This industry had touched the lives of every citizen of the Federation,
and exerted an imposing influence on its culture and institutions, and
on the shape and form of its society. When the people took the reins from
the planters in the 1970’s, the industry was already in very poor shape
but sugar was the only thing that the vast majority of the workers knew,
and there were very few other options open to them at that time. The choice
faced by most of them was continued employment in the sugar industry or
a protracted state of extreme poverty and deprivation, in short, sugar
or starvation. --->

The
Quest for an Island Paradise - Living On A Philippine Island - By Tanja
Bulatovic - The ultimate goal (albeit vague)
was to rent a cheap house on some tropical island, buy the shells and ship
the containers back to France. The whole routine would take up to
3 or 4 months of the year, leaving plenty of time free to contemplate love,
life and the universe. Once the shells were sold in France (wholesale),
I would receive my commission, which was only a shade above the cost of
purchase, but it didn’t matter. The aim here was lifestyle.
And if I could make enough money to survive in paradise, it was all I needed.
Best of all, Fabrice would join me in a few months (cut to 2 people running
towards each other in slow motion on an exotic beach. He lifts her
up, whirls her around and they finally embrace after their long and torturous
separation). Whatever, you get my drift but you have to admit, the dream
seemed viable. And when passion and freedom are your priority, why not
dream big?

Gaviota,
The Last Cowgirl in Cuba by Kirk Stephan
- I become even more schitzy than usual when I visit Cuba. Comparing the
resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle
society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last
trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first
inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence
of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport
in Cancun. I’d been used to getting some great photos of folk’s faces amidst
the air-conditioning steam that shot out of vents into the cabin just as
the Russian jets of Cubana Airline would leave the runway. Alas, no more
excitement here; Cuba has gone “Euro” with the acquisition of French planes.

Retire

Nature Island of the Caribbean, is an alluring land of majestic, mist-covered
mountains spilling with waterfalls. It is a place where rainforests with
parrots like flying rainbows and orchids growing wild are part of the natural
surroundings. "There is an earthy, beckoning presence to this island where
untamed Nature invites the newcomer to walk in her primal rainforests then
enter the caress of her warm mineral baths... Many souls have lost their
hearts to lesser beauty. The riotous abundance of fertile nature dazzles
the eye and the sweet scent of bay leaf and ginger permeates the air like
a perfume. ´Prepare to fall in love, utterly and completely,´
the Island whispers. Prepare to be unwilling to settle for life anywhere
but on this living island."
