A Critical Look At South Africa Politics And Economics  -  When I worked for a business and management consulting firm in Johannesburg, the first multi – racial election was held in South Africa. The days of the election were proclaimed public holidays. On the first morning of the election, as I did not have to work, I went to my favourite restaurant in Jo’burg for an extensive breakfast. When turning around the corner, I realized all of a sudden that the police had done a complete road block. There was no traffic on the road at all. Instead, there were people, loads of people, probably thousands of people, standing peacefully in line. Whites, Blacks, Colourds, Indians, peacefully waiting, chatting with each other, playing musical instruments….The first thought that crossed my mind was “what the heck is that”? It then dawned on me that they were all waiting in front of a voting station.

Between Mountain & Sea: Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Town, South Africa - “Can you repeat that?” I ask only to hear it again. “I’m valuing at 900 000 Rand” or US$150 000. Her voice sounds like music. The estate agent hands me her card, again, “Are you selling? I always have clients looking for this kind of property.” Am I selling? In my excitement I start to wonder if I should. I paid $53,000 for this 2 bedroom apartment two years ago. That isn’t too shabby of a return. Will this price hold? Should I get out now? The experts say yes and no. Properties gurus are saying that values are not only stable but will continue to grow; don’t sell.  This was my appraisal experience a few months ago and I know that most property owners in Cape Town have had a similar experience.

The incentive grants are limited to three years for any project. The allowances can be grouped under the following categories: Broad-spectrum incentives - The general assistance takes the form of electricity allowances for larger companies, assistance programs for industrial originality and joint ventures, expertise support programs with concessions for instruction of new employees, as well as the skill and workforce program to encourage the transferring of knowledge. Global sporting events impact on SA property prices - Thanks to all who have written and expressed such kindness to my last (and first!) article. South Africa The World’s New Destination  - OThe Republic of South Africa, located at the tip of Africa, is the world’s new favourite tourist AND migration destination.  As other countries around the globe make it more and more difficult to migrate to, South Africa has eased its restrictions. The intention of the South African Government is to attract skilled workers to the country. South Africa is short of 500,000 graduates in various fields including IT, Engineering, Business and many other technical fields. One of the strategies is for South Africa to become the call centre capital of the world. This requires skilled people and investment. As a tourist destination, South Africa is “a world in one country”. At 6 South African Rands (ZAR) to the USD it is a relatively inexpensive country to visit, and a great country to invest in or immigrate to.

Cape Properties: Exotic and a Bargain by Doug Casey -  I've come to the conclusion that property in South Africa is now among the best bargains in the world, in both absolute and relative terms. On this trip, I stuck to Jo'berg and the Cape; it's a big country and I simply put myself in the hands of my fairly numerous South African relatives. I can't make any recommendations on Jo'burg property because although it's cheap, I can't see the opportunity, and have no personal interest in it. That's not to say parts of Jo'berg aren't quite nice; the northern suburbs (Rosebank, Sandton, Illovo, Saxonwold, etc.) are thoroughly white; you wouldn't know these areas from any upmarket enclave in Europe or North America to judge by the people in the stores and cafes. It's just that the whites are a privileged enclave in a sea of much poorer people, most of them young, many with chips on their shoulders, from a different race. And that reduces its appeal considerably. The Cape has very different dynamics.

Investment Opportunities in South Africa - The interest rate cuts this year have had a number of positive impacts, one of which is an emerging trend in the South Africa property market that presages good news for the residential property sector in South Africa. "The most recent 100 basis point cut comes on top of 250 points in cuts since December last year as the Reserve Bank tries to ameliorate the weakening economy," said Sanett Uys, director at Colliers International Property and Facilities Management. So says Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property (PGP) group, who adds that "during this period, 50% of a total of approximately 30,000 residential golf estate properties – located within 66 golf estate developments – came onto the market in South Africa". "Around 4,000 of these were sectional title properties. From a regional perspective these are spread in Gauteng (around 33% of total stock), the Western Cape (30%) and KwaZulu-Natal (16%). Naturally some of the older and well-established estates such as Fancourt, Erinvale, Camelot, Princess Grant, Mount Edgecombe, Dainfern and Centurion have been around for more than 10 years
