Situated
at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula with a land area of 685.4
km2, Singapore is an island-state with a 4.2 million population. It
consists of one main island and 63 islets, some of the more well-known
ones being: Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin, St John's Island, Kusu Island, Pulau
Hantu, Jurong Island. Pulau means "island" in Malay. Modern Singapore was
founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. Only until the "rightful" Johorean
heir agreed to sell the island to the British that it became a colony.
Widely known and recorded by many sojourners as Temasek - Sea Town - by
the 14th century, Singapore was part of the Sri Vijayan empire. Legend
has it that a Palembang prince called Sang Nila Utama was responsible for
the present-day name, Singapura meaning Lion City. In Sanskrit and Malay,
Singa = Lion + Pura = City. It was while seeking refuge from a storm with
his entourage that Sang Nila Utama spotted a mousedeer that his courtier
told him it was a lion. But lions' natural habitat is the grassy plains
or the savannah, not jungles. As the British had ruled Singapore for about
a hundred and forty years till 1963, one of the legacies is the English
Legal System. As well as English which is the language of administration,
business and instruction in schools from kindergarten upwards. In addition
to Malay, Mandarin and Tamil that make up the official languages of the
country.

Singapore
Real Estate - Get There Before the "Gang" Arrives - By John Zhang
- Hot investment money is pouring into mainland China’s biggest and most
well-known cities. Shanghai has been a haven for foreigners buying
commercial properties. Buoyed by rising property values, they are
now also purchasing luxury residential real estate, mostly for rental purposes.
Today the money is coming quickly from U.S., European, and Indian investors.
But reality is that Chinese speculation in the Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing
real estate markets is over. Oddly enough, while hot Western money is flowing
into the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Chinese money for real estate
purchases is flowing out. For anyone who wants to make money in the
Asian real estate market, it’s important now to watch closely where the
mainland Chinese themselves buy and where trends likely will lead them.

Living
And Teaching In Singapore And Hong Kong: What You Need To Know
- They opened the heavy steel door and I peered inside. - A sudden
realization gripped me and I felt my emotions begin to stir. - ‘A furnished
studio apartment,’ they had said. - ‘Close to the school,’ they had promised.
I fought the sudden urge to collapse onto the nearest available poultry
house and turned to smile patiently at their expectant faces. ‘Thank you,’
I murmured. This was a battle that would not to be fought here. ‘Close
to the school’ it certainly was. ‘A furnished studio apartment’ it definitely
wasn’t. James Tam was St. Paul’s P.E. Teacher (or one of them), a keen
school gardener and wearer of comedy straw cowboy hats. He and a young
(temporary) school secretary from Canada called Iris, proceeded to show
me around my intended living quarters for the duration of my teaching contract
at St. Paul’s. Measuring up at less than four hundred square feet, this
didn’t take long.

Singapore:
Living, Working and Doing Business - Singapore
is often touted as a first-world global business city-state that many Assignees
upon arrival expect business to be conducted in the Western manner. Their
perception is further entrenched by the usage of English as the language
of business. Only until they start negotiating with their Singaporean counterparts
that they notice subtle Asian behaviour - and this is when the fun starts.
Making and Turning up for Appointment - Singaporeans value punctuality,
hence they appreciate that meetings start on time. Confirming the meeting
again a day before the actual date is optional. Meeting Etiquette - Unlike
other Asian business practices, Singaporeans do not take kindly to gifts
on the first day of meeting. Bribery is not a Singaporean way of life hence
this gesture may be misconstrued as such.

So
You Want To Retire In Paradise - Thoughts On Bali, Singapore And New Guinea
- Once upon a time, there was a man with a band of children, a lovely wife
and a house in Bali. Life was good, but this man thought that life could
be better if only he didn’t have to work. This is the story of that man
and his dream. The rainy season (musim hujan) blasted upon us in December
just as I left for Singapore to renew my Indonesian visa. I felt that the
house was ready for anything. I eagerly anticipated a few days of shopping
and eating in Singapore while I waited for my visa renewal to be processed.
Even though it rained the entire time I was in Singapore, I enjoyed myself
confident in the knowledge that my retirement home was safe and secure
should the rains in Bali be anything like they were in Singapore.

The
Singapore Taxi Driver - Fast, Easy And Efficient In Singapore
- Fast, easy and efficient could describe life in Singapore. You don’t
stroll along the streets in a world of your own with time to spare and
you definitely do not walk when a taxi is waiting nearby. Life in Singapore
is geared towards the making of money and any spare moment given is put
to that task. So if one should need to get to work or get to the office,
go shopping or attend the cinema (because the children insist on it) then
transport is essential. Private cars are good and super efficient. The
MRT or underground system is also a perfect feat of engineering: fast,
clean and cheap for the average punter, but life also seems to include
an inordinate number of taxis. They seem to be required and used whether
one owns a car or not and even when one is standing right next to the entrance
to an MRT station.

The
Anomalous Real Estate market that is Singapore
- This article was inspired by a recent headline and paragraph buried inside
Australia’s leading daily newspaper. “Yanks Visa Abusers.” According to
the immigration trends report, Americans make up most of Australia’s illegal
immigrants. Thousands have overstayed their visas. (Why leave paradise
and the great lifestyle when King W is back in power?) Thousands more are
legally living and thriving downunder, in every state from tiny Tasmania
to super-sized Sydney ? beyond. Before, during and since the recent election
in USA, my inbox has been hit repeadtedly by friends and strangers alike
who want the advice of someone gone before. “Yes, I’d do it again. Yes,
it’s worth the paperwork. Yes, you too can live and work and retire in
Australia. Come on down to the land down under.” Australia and New Zealand
are very appealing to Americans because of the similarities in lifestyle,
language and currency - and for a lot more reasons, politics aside.

All
aboard the Singapore - Malacca Express - Tim
Jellings is a freelance travel writer living in the United Kingdom. He
and Lynne Francis, Jelling's long time friend and traveling companion,
have seen the far corners of the earth. Jellings has been to such remote
places as Darwin's Patagonia, the Grand Palace of Bangkok, drunk-driving-taxis
in Sri Lanka, antediluvian rice fields in Banaue, effervescence Putre,
Chile, and old Arcadian Santorini, Greece, to name but a few. Jellings
has been invited to send more accounts of his far flung adventures to the
readers of Escape from America Magazine. "All aboard the Singapore-Malacca
Express!!!" I'm directed towards a tumbledown sooty bus that's chock
a block with baggage. I contort into the last remaining seat with Lilliputian
limb room.

Expatriate
Life in Singapore - I fell in love with Australia
when I was about 10. It might have been the koalas, kangaroos or pictures
of the Opera House. I am not quite sure, but I always had a healthy obsession
with the land down under and a strong desire to travel there. I found myself
finished with college and graduate school and working in America as a Speech
Pathologist. The school schedule left me plenty of time to travel so I
finally bought a ticket to Sydney. The first time you see Sydney Harbour,
it is as amazing and breathtaking as you would think. The views of the
Opera House, the cool breeze and the people buzzing around snapping photos
feel like an adrenal rush. There are ferries, boats and water taxis in
Circular Quay. The sidewalks are full of street performers and people relaxing
in the grass soaking up the sun and people watching. I was traveling with
my sister and we did all the tourist sites: climbing the Harbour Bridge,
Bondi Beach, Saturday markets, touring the Opera House and walking the
grounds at the Royal Botanic Gardens. We also did our fair share of feeding
native animals such as wallabies and kangaroos!

Tropical Darwin For The Capricorn Coast ~ Or, How We Escaped The “Build-Up”
In Australia’s Sunshine State - Tropical
Darwin has two seasons, “dry” and “wet,” and in between three to four months
of what is unfondly known as “the build-up.” From September, imagine 90%
humidity at 6 a.m. (and that’s the lowest it gets) with no rain relief
until the monsoons hit in December/January. It’s like walking around with
a 10-ton block of concrete on your shoulders, and even breathing is an
effort. With good reason, this is known as the suicide season. I
said to Heather, my wife, “If I have to endure one more build-up, I’m liable
to kill somebody—probably myself!” Through International Living, we started
researching alternative location and lifestyle options. We looked at Europe
and Central and South America, and it quickly became apparent that these
were not really viable options for us. Housing and living costs in these
places are no cheaper (and in some cases much more expensive) than what
we enjoy in Australia. Add to that the sheer distance we would have to
travel, the necessity to learn another language, giving up our careers,
and starting from scratch…and it all seemed too daunting a prospect.

Immigrating
To Australia - The First Twelve Months - There
are obvious times in one’s life to immigrate to Australia. Being pregnant,
with no organized prearranged job, family or friends in Queensland are
not many peoples idea of good, well-planned timing. The Migration Process
- To explain our madness I can say that we didn’t plan our move to be this
way. Both my husband and I had steady professional jobs in Switzerland,
friends, social activities and had a secure structured life. What we fancied
however was a lifestyle that offered us a possibility to enjoy more family
time and own a home. Whilst still based in Switzerland we tried to get
sponsored by a company to move. The Information Technology companies (my
husband’s profession), in our experience weren’t very forthcoming. Family
sponsorship also wasn’t an option and so we chose to do what’s known as
“Skilled Migration”. This works by submitting an application to immigrate,
based on education, English language ability, work experience, health,
marital status and finance. At this point in time, work skills such as
IT Professionals, midwives, teachers, and pastry chefs were of interest
to the immigration department.
