Whilst
we can all sit and dream of a perfect life as an expat, living overseas
on a beautiful Caribbean island, surrounded by luxury and splendour, the
reality for most of us is that we’d have to win the lottery to achieve
a lifestyle like that. Despite this fact
however, there is nothing stopping any of us from achieving a better life
abroad – even if we currently live on a fairly tight budget! The fact of
the matter is, there are places where your current budget will stretch
much further, there are places where you can perhaps increase the amount
you have to live on each month, and there are some excellent expatriate
tips that will see you living very well for whatever you have to spend
each month, because you’ll learn how to live like a local abroad. In this
report we want to show you that you don’t have to be restricted by the
financial constraints in your life – and if your dream is to one day escape
from your current lifestyle and move abroad in search of adventure and
fulfillment, money doesn’t have to be a barrier in your way and holding
you back. - How
to Live a Very Good Life Abroad on a Very Tight Budget By Susan Beverley

The
Romanian Profit-Machine ~ Investing In Romania by Kevin Stillmock
- Sooner or later just about all of us come to the painful realization
that money does not grow on trees, no matter what kind we plant or where
we plant them. I’ve traveled to a lot of countries and I’ve always made
a point to check out the local trees and see if any of them, by some odd
twist of fate, have started to turn green with dollar bills. I’ve never
completely given up hope that one might exist by some miracle, somewhere.
It’s been said that “sometime the answer is right under your nose.” For
those of us searching for cash-bearing trees, I have discovered that the
answer is indeed right under our noses. We’ve simply been looking in the
wrong direction, we have been looking up instead of down. Trees may not
grow money but the land on which they sit most definitely can. The land
on which Romania’s trees grow is of the most fertile cash-yielding land
in all of the world.

Romania:
Europe's Final Frontier And Next Hot Spot - Opportunities In Romania by
Kevin Stillmock And Jay Schechter -
I’ve called this piece Georgia in the warm heart of the Caucasus for a
very good reason: the Georgians are basically warm, friendly people, and
for much of the year, Georgia is a warm inviting country. I live and work
in Tbilisi, the capital of the Caucasian, former Soviet, Republic of Georgia.
Since recorded time, Georgians have been famous for their hospitality to
strangers. The visiting ancient Greeks knew Georgia as the land of the
Golden Fleece. It was a woman, St. Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia
in 330 A.D. Georgian wine has been produced for over 3,000 years and Georgian
literature dates back to the fifth century A.D. Scholars have compared
the 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli to Dante and Shakespeare.
Romania holds much in store for the unsuspecting tourist. The last of Europe's
great final frontiers it is the home of the ecological wonder of the Danube
Delta, the Carpathian Mountains, an abundance of natural springs and some
of the most pleasant resorts along the Black Sea coast.

Romania's
Road To Heaven And Answers To Last Month's Questions by Kevin Stillmock
- Bucharest, Romania - Imagine a path that led you along a dramatically
changing natural landscape of spectacular waterfalls, rugged mountains,
ancient underground temples, volcanoes, and prairies where wild buffalo
still roam. You might believe that it was the path to Heaven itself.
In fact it is Romania's own road to Heaven; a brand new superhighway under
construction, costing about 2 billion EURO, with an expected completion
date of 2010-2012. This new highway will ultimately connect Romania with
Europe and Asia, as it connects with other super highways in the region.
It will also transform out-of-the-way Romanian "boon-dock" towns into blossoming
resort oasis-es. They say that there is no such thing as Heaven on earth.
However, after recently following the path of this new highway, I am convinced
that if Heaven is not on earth then at least the road that leads there
soon will be.

On The Rise - Investing In Eastern Europe by Kevin Stillmock
- "Moscow aside, if you look at central and eastern Europe, Bucharest is
probably the biggest and most interesting opportunity for property investors
right now," says Edit Vesser, corporate director for CB Richard Ellis in
Bucharest in an article recently published by the esteemed Irish Times.
Approximately nine months ago, in February 2005, I first alerted readers
of Escape Artist to the incredible potential latent in the Eastern European
country of Romania. Several readers who contacted me purchased land through
a realtor that I advised them of in an area outside of the city limits
of Bucharest at 40 Euro per square meter. That
land today is now fetching an estimated 200 Euro per square meter. I was
cautioned by colleagues to refrain from quoting the above figures as they
seem quite sensational.

FOR
SALE”: Old Castles in Europe By Helga van Horn & Stephen Ferrada
- The richest selection of castles and manor houses are to be found in
the eastern states of former East Germany, followed by more eastern countries,
like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and others. It has been said
that looking for castles in East Germany is equivalent to being like a
small child in a candy store…the opportunities are rich indeed but great
care is needed to make the right choice. This part of Europe is positively
saturated with recent and not-so-recent history, bordering on the old Austro-Hungarian
Empire with the great historic cities Prague, Vienna and Budapest within
easy driving distance from any of the eastern Germany states. After the
end of WWII and the introduction of the communist “Land Reform” laws in
1945, virtually all private castles and manor houses were confiscated by
the authorities for municipal purposes. The bare minimum in repairs was
carried out over the 40 some years of the GDR (German Democratic Republic.)
The situation became worse after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989
and the end of Communism. Many historical buildings were simply left standing
empty and unattended for nearly 20 years, while others were sold to speculators
in the early 1990´s who mostly did nothing to prevent further decay.

Lions,
Vampires, Bears, And Gypsys - Romania, Gem Of The Balkansn
- Bucharest is a striking mélange of different cultural influences.
Historically, the Romanians have looked north and west to their European
and Slavic neighbors for their cultural, emotional, and religious succor,
spending most of their leisure time keeping the Turks out of Europe. These
differences are most clearly evident in the architectural styles in the
city—French, Soviet, Slavic, Byzantine. Constantinople has had an influence,
although real-life Dracula, Vlad Tepes, who was actually the ruler of this
area (Wallachia) in the mid-15th century, spent most of his days fighting
to keep Romania—then split into the three principalities of Wallachia,
Transylvania, and Moldavia—and the rest of Europe, free of the Ottoman.
Today, Bucharest is an eclectic mix of Mediterranean grandeur, Slavic tradition,
and post-Communist oppression. The populace seems to go about its daily
business in a frenzy of being able to breathe freely. Some still look over
their shoulders to see whether someone is still watching, but mostly the
younger generation continues its daily struggle to imitate Western fashion
in a close-but-no-cigar way, quite happy to embrace their recent freedom
in the bars springing up all over town.

Evaluating
The Gypsies, Real Estate, Stock Market & Culture Of Romania by Doug
Casey - Even though I generally travel
to about 20 different countries every year, I rarely go to Europe. I see
the continent as concrete-bound, tradition-ridden, class-oriented, socialistic,
constipated and generally lame. That's not to say it isn't full of fine
cafes, architecture and museums—but the place itself has the ambience of
a decrepit museum. It's like a Disneyland without the order, friendliness,
or cleanliness—and I'm no fan of Disneyland. With it's ingrained welfare
state, high taxes and immense bureaucracy, Europe is on the slippery slope.
In a couple of generations people in the Orient will view it as a place
to recruit houseboys and chambermaids—a quaint petting zoo populated by
backward peasants occupied mainly with whether they'd rather elect a Red
or a Green politician to reallocate their diminishing wealth. Still, I
jumped at a chance to visit Romania in May. I first went there in the winter
of 1966-67 when two friends and I boarded the Orient Express in Geneva
and headed to Istanbul, with stops in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

Real
Estate In Romania - I have to admit
it. I had almost no knowledge of the country of Romania just five short
years ago, when I came here for the first time. What came to my mind were
images of Dracula, Frankenstein, and under-cared for orphaned children,
the kind that were featured in fund-raising specials that appeared on television
when I was a kid. At least I can say that I knew for sure that it existed,
and so did it's province of Transylvania. That's partially contrary to
what I was taught in elementary school, by the way, when our teacher assured
us that Transylvania was only a storybook land and therefore we need not
be frightened that the horrible creatures that inhabit it actually exist!
Today, five years later, I have a radically different and much more well-informed
view of Romania. The things that used to come to mind about this
country, rarely do anymore. When I think back about my old preconceptions
of Romania, it never ceases to take me aback the great difference between
the infamous
legends and
surprising reality about this country. Now, instead, I am captured by many
of the same things that ancient Roman emperors like Cesar and Napoleon
found so alluring about this place.

Montenegro:
There are places in this world almost too good to write about By Tanja
Bulatovic - Like precious jewels, unpolished
and raw they sit proudly in the quiet knowledge of their own self-worth
without needing to blow their own trumpet. With a surface of only 13 800
Km2 and a population of 600 000, Crna Gora, as the locals call her (meaning
Black Mountain) is the size of a postage stamp. And yet, this UNESCO protected
nature lover’s paradise packs plenty of punch. Diverse landscapes, rugged
terrain, dramatic gorges, spectacular rivers, striking fjords and a picture
postcard coastline. There are 250km of beach (pebbles and sand), National
parks and ski resorts, all complimented by the turquoise hue of the Adriatic
Sea. The average temperature is 25°C in summer, with 230 days of sunshine
per year. While Montenegro, specifically the coast has grown in leaps and
bounds, little is known about its inland charms such as Durmitor National
Park, the Tara River Canyon (the deepest in Europe), Mount Lovcen, Skadar
(the biggest lake in the Balkans) and numerous other lakes, forests, and
hidden gems. -

Serendipity ~ The Biology Of Travel ~ By Lucas Moyer - Horner
- A key aspect to any symbiotic relationship is vulnerability. If
a cell’s membrane were impermeable, rather than semi-permeable, the cell
would survive only as long as its internal energy reserves provided.
Likewise, neighboring cells would be deprived of the favorable materials
normally secreted by the invulnerable cell. The unavoidable need
for physical openness can be carried over to the human-human level as well,
but it is mental vulnerability and compassion that allows symbiotic relationships
between societies and cultures to be effective.Peaceful relationships between
groups of people require an understanding of differences. In order
for these relationships to be mutually beneficial, there must also be recognition
of similarities. Discovery of these similarities in mind-set is,
for me, one of the most rewarding aspects of travel. It is a truly
joyful occasion when I can sit down with somebody who lives on the other
side of the planet, and discover that we really have a lot in common.
At the same time, I find that comprehending cultural variations can be
challenging. Although demanding, I think it is a healthy process
that stimulates the destruction of intercultural communication barriers;
therefore, allowing the vast wisdom of our ancestors to flow freely between
us. My experiences away from home have strengthened my convictions
to continue pushing the boundaries of familiarity, to experience a diversity
of cultures fist hand, and to remain open to the many possibilities, perspectives,
and coincidences that exist in the world.
