The
east Algarve is a well-kept secret by the Portuguese - this is where they
go on holiday. It is still the real Algarve and
you won’t find any Sky Sports bars, Karaoke bars or anywhere selling “All
Day English breakfasts”. What you will find is interesting historic towns,
superb beaches and wonderful restaurants. The East Algarve has miles
of golden sandy beaches that are mostly flanked by the Ria Formosa nature
park which is visited by a large number of migratory birds and is home
to flocks of beautiful pink flamingos. This makes the area very popular
with bird-watchers. Add to this the abundance of golf courses and quaint
traditional fishing villages and miles of old donkey tracks through the
hillsides that are vibrant with wild flowers in the springtime. This makes
the east Algarve a wonderful vacation and retirement destination. The demand
for accommodation is far outstripped by availability from Easter to October,
and throughout the winter this area is very popular with property hunters,
bird watchers, golfers and those looking for a little winter sunshine.
A while ago the popular English television program A Place in the Sun calculated
the Algarve as the number one place world wide to buy a place in the sun.~

Don’t
Let a Lack of Money Be an Obstacle to Your Retirement Abroad
- All these options mean you’ll be earning more and therefore you’ll have
more reserves to ‘play with’ each month. But if working isn’t an
option you can or want to consider, the management of your day-to-day money
will be key to your long-term financial success. Budgeting will be central
to you managing your money effectively; you therefore need to work out
your essential costs each month and meet them but don’t go over them.
You can save and reinvest any money you don’t spend, taking advantage of
any improved interest rates perhaps available abroad for example.
Shop around for goods and services just as you would in your old home nation
– and learn to haggle like the locals do! In most countries it is
totally acceptable to make an offer below the asking price – particularly
when it comes to big ticket items. And in some nations it’s even
normal to haggle at the market when you’re doing your weekly shop! Talking
of shopping, look at how the local people shop. Whilst you may be
used to everything being cheaper and easier in the hypermarket back home,
overseas it may be the case you should go to specialist food sellers to
get given items, and shop at the weekly or daily market for most produce.
If you build up a relationship with store owners, after a while they will
almost certainly ‘see you right’ when you continue to shop with them!
This can have the effect of your grocery bill going down in terms of costs
each month.

“FOR
SALE”: Old Castles in Europe - Fixing-up is
in most cases unavoidable. But problems with municipal services, historical
building authorities, and countless other unforeseeable issues can create
headaches, hence the need for a good and reliable consultant who can handle
the job for the buyer. Financing should be in place beforehand so that
you can plop down a deposit if you find your dream castle. The purchase
process takes about a month and is handled by a notary who in Europe is
the equivalent of an attorney. The writer of this article, together with
three partners, bought a castle near Leipzig in Saxony and has first hand
experience of what is involved in buying and running it. The author of
this article, together with associate Manfred Pawlik (specialist in castle
restoration) and Englishman Stephen Ferrada, both of whom have valuable
experience related to buying and restoring historic property, have all
bought their own dream properties in East Germany. The highs and lows of
castle ownership, the tears and laughter, have all been experienced.

What’s
Motivating You to Move Abroad and How Far Will You Leave America Behind?
- According to data from the IRS relating to the number of Americans who
renounce their citizenship annually, the numbers are dramatically on the
increase. More than 200 Americans turned their back on the United States
in 2008, 731 made the exceptionally difficult decision to renounce their
citizenship in 2009, and in 2010 1,485 individuals gave up their right
to an American passport, according to ‘corrected totals’ from renunciationguide.com.
When you consider that an estimated 5.2 million Americans currently live
abroad, you would be forgiven for thinking that these figures are an insignificant
fraction barely worthy of comment – however, according to the New York
Times: “waiting periods to meet with consular officers to formalize renunciations
have grown.” What’s more, where once even just the thought of turning
your back on your nation was regarded as treasonous, nowadays the possibility
is openly discussed amongst American expatriate groups both online and
offline. With this thought in mind, we decided to interview a number of
our readers who are currently actively planning their move overseas or
who have recently relocated. We wanted to know what the motivating
factors are for each soon-to-be expatriate for their proposed relocation
– and whether any Americans now living abroad were considering taking their
move to the next level and renouncing their US citizenship altogether…after
all, what is it that pushes people to take such drastic action?

Living
In The Azores ~ Life Off The Coast Of Portugal
- Deirdre and I both work via the Internet, so we decided to spend
some years moving around the world and experiencing new places and cultures,
a few months in each. Our first stop was São Miguel, the largest
island of the Azores. Here’s my account of our 3 months there. Next stop
– the smaller island of Faial, the international yachting meeting point.
Our friend Matthias has recently changed jobs. He used to buy used
Mercedes sedans in his native Germany for Azorean taxi drivers, drive them
down to Lisbon and have them shipped over to São Miguel. Now he’s
been made “Vice-Consul of Germany in the Azores”, a title which sounds
almost as important as “Consul” but does not entail any actual duty – he
says with a big, generous smile and a glint in his eye. His new line of
business (http://www.germanbau.com) is helping foreigners buy or build
homes on the Azores. With real estate prices still affordable by European
standards and a mild climate all year round, he seems to be heading for
success.

Travels
And Good Times In Portugal ~ There is a new
direct flight from Panama City to Madrid. The name of the airline is Air
Madrid: the flights leave every Monday and Friday; the flight takes 10
hours and 20 minutes: you fly up the Caribbean, over the Dominican Republic
and then north past Florida, when you are in the middle of the Atlantic
Ocean you turn east and fly straight over Portugal and Spain. When the
trip was planned I thought we were just going to Spain and then realized
we were also going to visit Portugal, which I really wanted to see because
I had heard that Lisbon was a great city. It was! The first night
in Lisbon we ate at a very nice restaurant called Pinocchio's. The food
was fine but the people and atmosphere were great. The restaurant is a
light green color with - the lower section of the walls from the floor,
to say, chair back level dark green - very white flourescent tube lighting.
And the waiters wear light and dark green uniforms and we were in green
as well.

In
The Azores Onwards To Faial And Pico - Peter
Café Sport is the heart of Faial: the meeting point of yachters
crossing the Atlantic, where they can swap their yachting stories and show
their yachting tans. While in the harbour there is an obvious hierarchy
of size and fanciness among the yachts, here the retired couple courageously
sailing their 18-footer can schmooze on an equal standing with the spoiled
scion on the 3-masted ship in search of life’s meaning with his boat full
of hanger-ons. Around Peters lies Horta, a miniature city on the miniature
island of Faial, Azores, Portugal. After spending 3 months on the island
of São Miguel I thought I had the Azores pretty much down pat. Agricultural,
isolated, beautiful nature. I could not imagine that the island of Faial
could be so different. We arrived in Faial in early April and immediately
made a startling discovery: the weather in Horta city is much sunnier than
on the rest of the island – not an obvious fact considering that it’s only
15 kilometers across.

The
Cave Houses Of Southern Spain - Old
cave houses in the Granada countryside can still be found for a relatively
small investment. Last year, old cave houses in need of renovation were
on the market in Granada's pricey Albaycin district for 30,000 to 50,000
euros on small lots with no conventional buildings and no Alhambra views.
For finished cave houses, expect to pay eighty to two-hundred thousand
euros, depending on the adjoining land that goes with the cave, the views,
etc. There are currently cave houses with land advertised for as high as
900,000 euros, with Alhambra views, though we regard this price as extraordinary.
Given the real estate market in Spain, prices will continue to go up. You
can also explore areas such as Guadix and either buy existing cave homes
or buy land and build, with the latter option probably presenting the best
value if you discover a good site.

Buying
Real Estate in Portugal - I have just been
approached by a friend of two people nearing retirement age who bought
a piece of land in the Algarve some time ago which already had planning
consent for the erection of what was intended to be their retirement home.
They are now ready to start work on the building, but find they have no
access. This is where I live, but it could be just about anywhere. I have
heard of similar problems in most countries in Europe, and of course there
are many such problems in Central America. What on earth do you do when
one of these problems hits you smack in the face? Or, more to the point,
what should you do to avoid getting hit in the face in the first place?
Let me get something off my chest first. The world seems to be filled with
people who have either too much money to throw around, or they don’t seem
to have any grasp of business, and behave as if they have had the powerlines
to their brains severed. I have no sympathy with two probably reasonably
sane people in their early fifties who buy a building plot with no access.
How the heck did they think the builders were going to get in with their
bricks, concrete blocks, cement and sand? This article will attempt to
cover most problems that are likely to occur when purchasing property abroad.
The problems can range from a lack of water supply, to access problems,
crooked solicitors, trouble at the planning department, language problems,
compulsory purchase notices, stroppy neighbours who want to poison your
dog, or your well, or dig holes on your land. Buying abroad can be an absolute
nightmare. Let's try and make sure it isn't.

Guide
to the best Algarve Golf Locations -
The Algarve is famous for quality golf and with over 40 courses in a 200-mile
area, there is something to suit every mood. With excellent year round
access to Faro international airport from Europe and all courses within
an hour or so from here, getting to them is also very easy. Serious and
hobby golfers alike will not be disappointed. The Algarve has attracted
golf tourists for years and the facilities are mature and very well maintained.
The fabulous summer weather and dramatic scenery for which the region is
renowned are perfectly combined with warm winters to make year round golf
a pleasure - high golf season is from late autumn to late spring. In addition
to golf, the white sand beaches along the entire length of the Algarve
coastline are beautiful and rated amongst the best in Europe. Most have
the “Blue Flag” classification, awarded for the highest standards of cleanliness.
- At the Western end the landscape is rugged and breathtaking and in addition
to golf is fantastic for sailing and water sports. The Eastern and Spanish
Algarve is the most sheltered part of this Atlantic coastline and the sea
in the region is shallow, safe and warm for swimming all year. Unlike the
Costas of Mediterranean Spain there are still miles of completely unspoilt
coastline. The Portuguese authorities are very conservative and strict
planning regulations mean that over development will never be repeated
here.

EscapeArtist
Expat Taxes Newsletter Individuals have been leaving their own land to
seek opportunities elsewhere since the dawn of mankind - But
it has only been since the development of the modern nation-state, and
its taxation of the worldwide income of its citizen-residents, that expatriation
has taken on significant tax consequences. One of the first tax advisors
to appreciate the potential tax savings of expatriation was my friend and
colleague, Marshall Langer J.D., a valued member of The Sovereign Society
Council of Experts. Langer is an international tax attorney and the respected
author of several major international tax treatises. He is also the daring
creator of a now out-of-print book, The Tax Exile Report. This title gained
international notoriety when the late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan
(D-N.Y.), red-faced and angry, waived a copy of the book at a televised
Senate hearing, denouncing it as “a legal income tax avoidance plan.” -
Escapeartist has hatched a new partnership with Global Wealth Protection
that will set the standard for authoritative information on Asset Protection,
International Banking and Wealth Management and with a number of accountants,
lawyers and bookkeepers that know the laws regarding expat taxes, how to
do your income tax, which form to use, and which services understand the
complexity of expat concerns. Simply put, the EscapeArtist Expat
Taxes Newsletter portal will provide a wealth of information that
will show you ways to save on taxes . . . and then some.

Want
to Live in Europe? - Consider Corsica -
When most people think of France, they probably imagine the hexagonal country
mashed in the middle of continental Europe and its stunning capital city
Paris. Although this does make up the most populous bulk of the country,
France also consists of many overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Tahiti,
etc.) as well as one of the largest, most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean
Sea: Corsica (”La Corse”). The French call Corsica ”l’Ile de
Beauté” (the island of beauty) and it truly is a place of inspiring
landscapes and stunning geography. Unlike the French Riviera which
has basically turned into one gigantic strip of unbridled concrete sprawl,
the Corsican coastline is still virtually unspoiled, with limited construction
allowed only in major cities or very small fishing towns that have been
there for centuries. In fact, if you try to build a vacation house
too close to the coastline in Corsica, it is actually not an uncommon occurrence
for the local Corsican populace to blow it up during the off season.
A few suggestions before embarking on a building project in Corsica would
include: having a Corsican or Italian sounding name - acquiring a good
standing with the local population by helping to “finance” a project of
public interest (something more consequential than a public bench).
