My
wife, Karen, and I decided that it had been a couple of years since we
traveled in South America and a vacation down there was just the thing
we needed. Clearly, it’s no secret to our
friends that we love South America. We find the pace of the people
in their every day lives to be enjoyable. The focus on friends and
family is to be admired. Sure, not every thing works the way it does in
the USA, but all you need is a little more patience. So, it was with
very little hesitation that we booked our flights to Peru and Bolivia.
My goal was not just to have fun looking at the ancient civilizations,
but also do some comparative “shopping”, concerning either of these countries
as being a future home. We have been a huge fans of South America ever
since visiting Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, and we have often dreamed
of living there somewhere. We loved Santiago, and Buenos Aires, as
well as the beautiful town of Colonia, in Uruguay. Buenos Aries is
a wonderful city and we can attest that the Recoleta neighborhood is the
finest for in-city living perhaps in all of South America. It really
is a steal right now with the peso dangling at three to one versus the
dollar and the government moving forward on stabilizing it. We wondered,
however, what Peru and Bolivia might offer in the way of bargains in real
estate. We would need to find business opportunities in the service
sector, like a hotel with a restaurant that we could own, operate, and
live in. In doing our research before we left we found that Peru
and Bolivia both have very young populations. There is an explosion
of demand for goods and services (American and European), along with growing
incomes, and a desire to do more business. These factors makes these
two countries strong candidates for getting in early, which is always desirable,
and then riding the wave of an increased economy for many years which might
set us up for retirement there as well - Finding

Real Estate Marketplace - Real Estate In Peru - Current Listings
- Is Peru a good place to invest in Real Estate? Peru has lower prices
than most nations in South America. It is becoming more attractive for
foreign real estate investors and retirees. We believe that real estate
in Peru can be an exceptional investment. Today’s Lima is a modern, world-class
city, serving as one of South America’s financial centers as well as a
major manufacturing hub, being home to over 7000 factories. On the opposite
end of the spectrum, you will find many beautiful old classical buildings,
such as the Church of San Francisco, the Cathedral of Lima, and the unforgettable
Torre Tagle Palace on Ucayali 363.

Nomadic
Retirement, Part IV: Peru and Ecuador - Over
the last few weeks, I have taken my readers on the first parts of a journey
around the southern half of the world. We started in New Zealand, and then
took the great leap across the entire Pacific Ocean to South America, a
continent so fascinating that the curious nomadic traveler could spend
a very long time exploring from Tierra del Fuego in the South, to steamy,
amazing Amazonia in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. Now we will finalize the
South American leg of the journey by visiting two fascinating nations that
straddle the Andes between the Amazon Jungle and the Pacific Ocean. Peru
- If, like most travelers, you arrive in the country at Lima’s Jorgé
Chavez International Airport, you will likely be greeted by the overcast,
foggy, cool weather created by the nearby Pacific Ocean’s cool Humboldt
Current. Judging by this weather, you would probably never guess that you
are a mere 12° south of the equator, well within the Southern Tropical
Zone. The capital city has been an important regional center since Francisco
Pizarro founded it on January 18, 1535. The city has also been the victim
of numerous damaging earthquakes. One in October of 1687 caused severe
damage to Lima and surrounding towns, wreaking havoc in combination with
the ensuing tsunami. Another occurred in 1746, keeping the urban renewal
spirit alive. Lima sits on the infamous ring of fire and has very recently
(October 29 2011) been the subject of a nerve rattling 6.9 magnitude temblor.

Tipon,
Peru: Guinea Pig and Inca Ruins - My first
escape, like Papillon, was not altogether successful. My girlfriend of
many years, and I set off for Europe in November of 1970 bent on doing
the grand tour even though we were hippies – sort of – and disdained this
hackneyed tradition. Escape was really not the idea but rather adventure
and our travels were indeed adventurous taking us to Morocco, most of Europe,
and the trail through Asia to India and Nepal all crammed into 13 rather
smoky months that eventually saw us back in Canada and me, unhappily, in
university once again minus the girlfriend. Life at university was not
to my liking, so a job was got (my friends at the Canadian National
Railway were happy to have me back as a trained operator / telegrapher),
and I started saving money for the next breakout. This came sooner
than expected when a drunk driver rear-ended my most valuable asset, and
when faced with a cash settlement or a new car, I split with the cash to
Canada’s hippy haven, Vancouver. With the temperature hovering at freezing
under constantly spilling clouds, the free and easy lifestyle had a frigid
component my body could not abide.

Lake
Titicaca: Live Amongst the Inca Tribes - For
centuries, mankind has believed that the physical world and the spiritual
world collide on the waters of expansive lakes – and if you’re looking
for waterfront property on Lake Titicaca, you’ll quickly become a believer.
Known as the cradle of the ancient Incan civilization, Lake Titicaca is
one of the world’s largest lakes; in fact, it’s so large that it stretches
through two countries: Peru and Bolivia. Here in Lake Titicaca, you’ll
experience a world that’s far removed from the ordinary. Locals engage
in commercial business while dressed in ancient Incan ceremonial wear;
tourists mingle with tribes people, who have perfectly preserved the language
of their ancient forefathers; and innovative industrial advances are made
in an area that’s quickly becoming a worldwide economic force. In short,
if you’re looking for gorgeous waterfront property in an international
destination that’s still growing by leaps and bounds, then Lake Titicaca
is the perfect location for you. In short, if you’re looking for gorgeous

Opportunities for Voluntourism - Planeterra’s
Director, Richard G. Edwards said that more than ever, “community development,
environmental and wildlife conservation projects around the world need
the support of active travelers who are willing to take the time to understand
what is needed and how they can help. Our programs are designed with great
care, so that everyone genuinely benefits, while having fun learning about
each other’s cultures.” Of the eleven new programs for 2010, five
are Independent Tours, which provide optimum flexibility for travelers
(projects in Argentina, Brazil, Peruvian Amazon, Ecuadorian Highlands and
Project Cuzco Kids). These trips depart weekly, throughout the year, and
can be easily combined with other adventure travel tours booked through
founding partner, Gap Adventures. 2010 also brings Planeterra’s launch
of family programs with a new voluntour in Ecuador.

Child’s Tale In Peru - Shorty usually staked
a claim on the street in front of an Italian restaurant and market. As
we neared, he would emerge from the shadows shuffling towards us with chocolate
in hand calling out, "amigos, amigos!" We were easy money for Shorty.
We always emptied our pockets for him and rarely asked for chocolate in
return. Our change barely seemed sufficient compared to the joy that Shorty
brought us with each encounter. When we first encountered Alex, he
was among a group of children selling postcards and chocolate bars to tourists
on
the streets of Cusco, Peru. One could not avoid being offered any
number of items ranging from hand-knitted mittens and scarves to cigarettes
and calling cards. Alex was the youngest and smallest of the group. His
straight dark hair fell over the tops of his ears, but was neatly cut in
front. His cheeks were slightly burned from exposure to an unforgiving
sun and his brown eyes sparkled with youthful curiosity. Alex wore loose
sweat pants and a hooded sweatshirt that seemed to swallow his small body.
We immediately pinned him "Shorty" as he was only half the size of his
peers.

Adventures
In Peru ~ Peru's Manu Biosphere Reserve -
Situated in the remote southwestern region of the Amazon Basin and said
to have the highest biological diversity of any rainforest in the world
is Peru’s Manu Biosphere Reserve. Manu covers a total of 4.5 million acres
of pristine rainforest from the crystalline cloud-forest streams to the
sluggish, chocolate-brown rivers of the dense lowland jungle. Manu’s environment
has been unchanged for thousands of years, thus allowing more species of
plants and animals to evolve here than in any other similar area of the
world. With numerous guide services from which to choose and a wide range
of trip styles available, we settled on a four-day excursion with Ecological
Tours. Over the course of our trip we would travel by 4-wheel drive van,
mountain bike, whitewater raft, and zip-lines. Though most trips
were based around wildlife viewing, Ecological Tours offers adventure-based
tourism in the Manu jungle. In addition, they pride themselves on being
the only company to offer a canopy tour, a series of horizontal traverse
cables called zip-lines that sail through the jungle using platforms and
pulleys.

TED
– Ideas Worth Spreading - Venezuela's Youth Orchestra
- In a world of seemingly declining standards it is refreshing to see a
website that offers ideas worth spreading. The website, called TED, is
devoted to presenting in video format some amazing ideas that have the
potential to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. TED is
not just adults with dry theories, TED presents adults who have done some
innovative thinking, yes; but TED also presents children from around the
world who have accomplished absolutely jaw-dropping things in medicine,
music, and technology. I was brought to a total standstill by the accomplishments
of Jose Antonio Abreu the charismatic founder of a youth orchestra system
[El Sistema] that has transformed the lives of thousands of kids in Venezuela.
Gustavo Dudamel, who is considered one of the best conductors in the world
today, is a product of El Sistema. To give you some indication of the quality
of TED, its ideas, and the recipients of the TED prize for the best ideas,
listen to Gustavo Dudamel lead El Sistema's top youth orchestra. An amazing
performance by young people rescued from the slums of Venezuela by one
man. Also see the article: Harry

Mystical Marriage In Machupicchu ~ Getting Hitched On Top Of The World
- Cusco, o Cusco, land of sacred green valleys, land of mysticism, land
of the Inti Raymi (fiesta of the sun), land of the Inkan ancestors and
of the mamchas and papachus. This is the land that captured my heart and
spirit, the land where I met my compañero para toda la vida (life
companion), Monito. I met Monito while I was visiting Cusco, looking for
an adventure in what is called there “mystical tourism.” I sought
Monito out because we had a mutual friend who recommended Monito to me
as a spiritual guide for people who want to experience the sacred plant,
San Pedro, a hallucinogenic cactus that has been used for centuries in
the Andes Mountains for cleansing ceremonies, to connect with the Pachamama
and la naturaleza (Mother Earth and nature) and to open the sixth sense
and discover things you’ve never understood before. I decided I wanted
to try San Pedro right after my thirtieth birthday after several years
of difficult times, struggling with depression and chaos when several people
in my family died in rapid succession, including my mother.

Discovering
The Inca Trail - Hiking The Andes -
The sun was just starting to rise over the green carpet of rolling hills
when my plane touched down. The flight from Lima had been nearly empty
allowing me to scramble down the aisles in search of better views of the
Cusco Andes. It was not until I reached baggage claim that the sensation
of being a tourist truly overwhelmed me. Surveying the scene around me,
there were enough guide services packed into the tiny airport to accommodate
far more than the 500 people allowed each day on the Inca Trail. Thankfully,
the traditional Peruvian band filled the room with enough noise to drown
out the crowds of tour agents and cab drivers who shouted their deals through
revolving doors and windows.one consider coming here? I try to stay away
from really popular areas when I travel. I pride myself on my difference,
my individuality, and my own direction. But sometimes there’s a reason
for the loads of tourists. Some places just aren’t to be missed. On a 5-week
journey through Peru, I arrived in Cuzco with several weeks to spare, presumably
enough time in which to hike the famed Inca Trail. The former capital of
Peru serves as the traveler’s gateway to Machu Pichu, among other destinations.
Nearly every person who arrives in Peru to visit this world-renowned site
will journey first to Cuzco to arrange the guide and porters required to
hike the Inca Trail to the ruins. The sheer number of tour services is
daunting; in fact, the range of prices and tours can make choosing a guide
one of the most difficult aspects of hiking the Inca Trail.

Karma
And The Coast - In Peru - It had been a long,
strange trip indeed. In search of gainful employment I had circumnavigated
the globe in six months. My itinerary read like this: Bogota; to Caracas
to L.A. to Hong Kong. Two months of work, then off to Baghdad, Basra, and
Nasiriyah, Iraq. Four months later: Kuwait, London, New York, Lima, Bogota;
and home. Along the way I was offered more work in Afghanistan, Uruguay,
Valladolid. The saying is that it’s a small world, maybe sometimes not
small enough, after logging twenty or thirty hours of flight time at a
stretch. I am home in time for the blooming of the Mangoes and the cashews
are already full of fruit. Winter is in full swing which, at these latitudes,
means 85-90 degree days and 65-70 degree nights, with an occasional cold
front (50-60 degrees) that rolls down from the cordilleras. A welcome change
from the 120-140 degree days and nights of the Iraqi deserts. I was badly
thrashed and in serious need of some down time. Nightly bar-b-ques, a fishing
trip downriver, and a few hours drinking beer on the plaza and catching
up with the local gossip filled that need well and truly. Absolute Heaven.
Two weeks later, an idle thought occurred, small talk was made around the
fire and the deal was done. Off to the coast of Peru. A working vacation
as it were (a wink and a nod will suffice here).

Peru
- Notes From A Canadian Traveler- I remember
sitting up in the attic of our farmhouse as a child, looking through those
bright yellow “ National Geographic” magazines, that someone had given
us. For hours, I dreamt of those far away and strange places. Never, believing
it could ever come true. So now that our children are on their own, I decided
to pursue the dreams of childhood, of far away countries. Not just as a
tourist, but as a person who could perhaps help improve someone’s else
life, or just bring some joy for a few weeks to someone who needed it.
I picked Peru, because of Machu Pichu. I chose Huancayo, a city of half
a million. I started looking on the Internet under, “Volunteering in Peru,
teaching English”. My disappointments came day after day, when I discovered
that lots of money was required by organizations, you had to pay to be
a volunteer? Disappointment turned to perseverance. I kept at it, and found
many organizations that wanted anyone with good English skills to teach.

Banking Secrets
- Why Bank Offshore? - The Governments of the world are out of control
. . . and broke. They need your assets to make themselves solvent.
That they squander those assets is forgone. We live in a world where personal
sovereignty, privacy and individuality are under attack. The right to privacy
is more than an abstract necessity, it is also a psychological necessity.
If we do not have the right to privacy, we do not own the rights to our
own lives. Individuality entails making value judgments independent of
political, religious or social dogmas. In making value judgments
we make choices. In today's world, if the choices we make differ
from the status quo then we come under pressure to 'toe the line'. There
is no line to toe. We live in an intellectual vacuum, where short
of the logical choices we make in our own behalf, there are no other values.
Our Magazine & Websites stress privacy and living our life by our own
standards, protecting what is ours from those who have not earned
it. - In today’s technological world, millions of individuals are subject
to privacy threats. Companies are hired not only to watch what you visit
online, but to infiltrate the information and send advertising based on
your browsing history. People set up accounts for Facebook; enter bank
and credit card information to various websites. Those concerned about
Internet privacy often cite a number of privacy risks — events that can
compromise privacy — which may be encountered through Internet use.

Fears
About My Children Returning From a US Vacation as Bitter Expat Kids
- I’m nervous and scared. Okay, I said it out loud. I’m
feeling pretty vulnerable, second-guessing my decisions, which definitely
is not a natural state for me. My in-laws have recently, very generously
bought tickets to fly my kids, ages 10, 8 and 6, back to the US on a direct
flight for a six week vacation. In the two years since I have moved
my family down to Argentina, we have never been back to the states for
a visit. So, for a lot of obvious reasons, this is an amazing opportunity
for my kiddos and all of the extended family which I should be completely
grateful for, and in many ways I am. I get 6 weeks without kids,
(which has never, ever happened in my ten years of being a mom!!).
Six weeks of space, six weeks of quiet, yummy me-time. I have the
chance to do some solo traveling through Bolivia that I have wanted to
do for a long time, channeling my inner gypsy that has been screaming to
get out for a while now. My kids get 6 weeks hanging out with aunts,
uncles, cousins, grandparents, great-grandparents, getting completely spoiled
and loved on beyond belief…and this is where I begin to think maybe way
too much…

Expat Taxes Newsletter - Individuals have been leaving their own land to
seek opportunities elsewhere since the dawn of mankind -
But it has only been since the development of the modern nation-state,
and its taxation of the worldwide income of its citizen-residents, that
expatriation has taken on significant tax consequences. One of the first
tax advisors to appreciate the potential tax savings of expatriation was
my friend and colleague, Marshall Langer J.D., a valued member of The Sovereign
Society Council of Experts. Langer is an international tax attorney and
the respected author of several major international tax treatises. He is
also the daring creator of a now out-of-print book, The Tax Exile Report.
This title gained international notoriety when the late U.S. Senator Daniel
Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), red-faced and angry, waived a copy of the book
at a televised Senate hearing, denouncing it as “a legal income tax avoidance
plan.” - Escapeartist has hatched a new partnership with Global Wealth
Protection that will set the standard for authoritative information on
Asset Protection, International Banking and Wealth Management and with
a number of accountants, lawyers and bookkeepers that know the laws regarding
expat taxes, how to do your income tax, which form to use, and which services
understand the complexity of expat concerns. Simply put, the EscapeArtist
Expat Taxes Newsletter portal will provide a wealth of information
that will show you ways to save on taxes . . . and then some.

Of Offshore Banks - An offshore bank is defined
by its location, or 'jurisdiction'. An offshore bank is usually located
outside of the depositors country of residence, typically within a jurisdiction
that levies very low taxes, or no taxes at all. Each jurisdiction
varies in its degree of taxation, its degree of privacy, and its services.
Offshore banks located in politically and economically stable jurisdictions

How
to Maintain Asset Privacy Within the US By Bobby Casey, Global Wealth Protection
- With asset protection planning, anonymity seems to be the number one
concern for people these days. And rightly so. Any 11 year
old with a laptop can easily do an online record search and find your bank
accounts and their balances, your vehicle registrations, your real estate
assets, your credit report, your residence history and even your driving
record. Many clients are interested in anonymity and asset protection.
In some cases clients confuse the two. They think that anonymity
is asset protection. It is not, but anonymity does have benefits.
When forming an FLP (family limited partnership) or an LLC (limited liability
company), the strength of the entity is dependent upon the state of formation,
the quality of the operating agreement and the business purpose of the
entity. -
