| Thoughts
From New Zealand ~ by Rick Adams - For the past couple of weeks
I've been pondering what to write about for this month’s issue. I don’t
have writer’s block but I did feel like I had covered all of the important
issues and answered most of the important, and not so important, questions
people have thoughtfully asked about moving to New Zealand in previous
articles. May/05 |

Places To Live - New Zealand ~ by Jurgen Klemann - When I flew
almost three years ago from New Zealand to Mexico I had to change planes
in Los Angeles. What struck me immediately at the airport of Los Angeles
was the rather unfriendly tone of some government minions there in their
fancy uniforms. First, after living for lots of years in New Zealand and
South Africa, to put it mildly, I was not used to this sort of tone. Needless
to mention that I have no intention of getting used to it. Second, when
you see those government minions in uniform you can almost take it for
granted that they wear uniforms because they do not have the foggiest clue
about how to run a business. May/04 |

At Home In New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - The Latin word for island
is insula. The Romans lived in apartment-type buildings in blocks surrounded
by streets: islands. We get our English words insular and insulation from
it. New Zealand is an island nation, surrounded by vast oceans. But, Kiwis
are not an insulated people—they do not insulate themselves or their houses!
However, now that spring is here we are getting out of our cold houses
and thinking about what we will do outside them. These activities can be
as close as our gardens, but also far away from them. I have been doing
both. Nov./04 |

| How
To Live Overseas And Have The Place To Yourself ~ By Jeff And Karen
Hay - One way to move overseas would be to take care of somebody's exclusive
million dollar home. And there are a number of people who become caretakers
in places such as Costa Rica, New Zealand and Mexico. Taking care of the
house and living on a nice piece of real estate might be the answer to
your stationary blues. May/03 |

| So
What's The Big Deal ~
by Rick Adams - A lot of people in the United States write to me asking
about the differences between living in New Zealand and say, New York.
For one thing, there are four times as many people living in the city of
New York as in the entire country of New Zealand! That makes downtown anywhere
here much less crowded than most street corners there. Feb/05. |

| Getting
Ready For The Big Move ~ by Rick Adams - For those Americans, particularly
those Americans living in the “blue” states that realize that there is
life beyond the city limits of your town and in fact outside of the United
States, you may be considering your options. Could life be better elsewhere?
Is it possible to work and live in another country? Are there actually
other countries that don’t think Americans are a few bricks shy of a load…rowing
with one oar…or that their elevator doesn’t go to the top floor? Is it
possible to leave your native country and still be happy, nay, even happier?
We say “yes!” (We also rarely say “nay”.) We’d like to suggest considering
New Zealand as your new home. My wife and I left the comfort of our big
American home, our big American jobs and our big American cars for a new
life and we think you can probably do it too. |

| In
New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - Winter has definitely settled in
the Canterbury region of New Zealand. When I leave my house before 7AM
for the walk down the hill to the bus stop, it is dark. When I return by
5PM and head back up the hill, it is dark again. The port town of Lyttelton
smells of wood fires burning at both times and I see smoke twisting and
rising from chimneys into often foggy and leaden skies. June/04 |

Beyond - Real Estate In New Zealand - Living In New Zealand
~ by Susan Rogers - We landed in New Zealand true immigrant style. When
we left for New Zealand, known as the land of the "Long White Cloud", we
allowed our family of five just two bags each. One was for clothes and
one for everything else we wanted to bring to this "new land". We had no
jobs, no relatives, and knew no one. We left everything we had known in
the US including a large house overlooking San Francisco Bay, good paying
jobs, cars, computers, furniture, friends and family. (This decision from
two people with advanced degrees!) For us, moving to the South Pacific
has been the best decision we ever made. Aug./05 |

| Escape
To New Zealand -
It costs less to live in New Zealand, but the wages earned are also lower.
We made several trips to New Zealand in our exploration process. The second
trip included our three boys and we spent 30 days camping in the North
and South Island. New Zealand is also campers' paradise. On
that trip we decided to settle in a small town called Nelson located at
the top of the South Island |

From New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - Think about the word “line”
and all its applications! This past week, while reading the newspaper
and wandering around Christchurch, these thoughts have amused me. What
was there to see, read and experience in this mountain top nation? A telephone
line, a railway line, a tramline, a beeline, keeping kids in line, that
line on the face, staying to the left of the line and, of course, the fault
line. Sept./04 |

hope to have more articles from Varoon in the near future. Aug/03 |

a great deal of light on the subject of migration as well as on New Zealand’s

| Six
Months Later - Real Estate In New Zealand - Living In New Zealand
~ by Rick Adams - They say if you do something every day for two weeks
it becomes a habit. We’ve been in Aotearoa (the native Maori name
for New Zealand meaning Land of the Long White Cloud) for about six months
now. Having moved from the American Southwest to the Southern Hemisphere
in June we (almost) feel like we belong here. And like a marriage
it sometimes seems like it’s been six years…but other times like six days.
It all depends on what we’re doing at the time. When we’re in the
middle of doing the day-to-day things everyone does we sometimes feel like
we’re still back in the “old country”, the exception being that we can
rejoice that Wal-Mart hasn’t found its way here yet. Other times we feel
like we’re on an extended vacation in a very magical land filled with new
things to see around every corner. Dec./04 |

| Life
In New Zealand...So Far ~ Cars And Fish ~
by Rick Adams - Since my first article I’ve gotten a number of e-mails
asking a number of questions about New Zealand. “What’s it like to
shop there? How much do groceries cost? What kind of clothing
styles do people wear?” “What’s it like driving there?” and things like
that. Most of them are signed by; you guessed it, not men.
And that’s okay. I reply to all of my e-mails - even if your AOL
browser marks them as spam and deletes them - I do reply and I do
my best to tell people what it’s like to live here (after asking my wife
of course). Nov./04 |

| Reflections
On Immigration To New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - My husband Tom
stood there telling me that he wanted to move our family of six from our
home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to New Zealand. He had just arrived back
from his first trip Down Under to help a fledgling television station get
on the air. Before he had gone, he hinted there might be a job possibility.
“Just tell me if you think New Zealand will be better for our marriage,
our family and our health,” was my response. Our family had been through
some tough times. A stressful life as a television producer in the United
States had taken its toll. Now, he was saying he was sure New Zealand would
be a better place for us. Jan/04 |

& Anecdotes About Living In New Zealand - Part 1 ~
by Candy Green - n New Zealand, the student numbers for “integrated” schools
are skyrocketing, increasing at three times the rate of state schools in
the
last eight years. Integrated does NOT have the same meaning as in the United
States! Here, integrated means that a school is able to keep its religious
or values-based character; the schools and teachers receive funding and
salaries from the government as they do in the public ones. Feb/04 |

questions about the more important things about living in New Zealand.
Knowing that he was probably speaking for several other alert readers I
thought I’d answer his thoughtful and weighty queries here in an easy to
follow “Q and A” format. The author, for reasons you will soon divine,

Sporting Lodge For Sale in New Zealand - Imagine
a place uncrowded and safe. With no snakes. No poisonous spiders.
No bears to interrupt your fishing. With a climate second to none,
set on a group of Islands in the South Pacific known by the Maori name,
Aotearoa. Where the people are kind and considerate. Said by
some to be the most beautiful country in the world, and by others, as “God’s
Own”. After eleven years of successful operation as a unique, world renowned
sporting lodge, and much soul searching, the owners have decided to offer
this exclusive estate for sale... When Mick Mason told us about
it, we decided to feature it as a sort of thumb-nail sketch in the Quarterly. |

The Wild West Coast Of New Zealand ~ by Stephanie Giordano - Before
every winter's arrival I sense its presence. I feel the bitter chill in
the air, and the familiar scent of snow. At first it’s a welcomed phenomenon.
The idea of bundling up with plush blankets and hot cocoa sounds appealing.
This feeling, however, is short lived for me. After a few snow storms,
when I can't feel my nose and toes, and I'm so bitterly cold that by the
time I get inside I'm sweating from moving so fast, I remember how much
I miss summer. Actually, this year, I'll remember how much I miss Piha.
Piha, on the wild west coast of New Zealand, will become my recurring destination
as an escape from New York winters. Nov./05 |

Kiwi
is not just a fruit, or a flightless bird. It is the name adopted
by New Zealanders as a nickname for themselves and an adjective for their
culture. The word Kiwi originates from the Maori word for

(and most widely spoken) language but the New Zealanders have a few little
"Kiwisms' of their own. Sept./06 |

Final Chapter…For Now on New Zealand ~ by Rick Adams - Packing
up everything you own including that “I just can’t live without this keepsake
from the Clinton Presidential Library” and moving to the other side of
the world is a big deal. For some it’s a very big deal. For others it’s
just another stepping stone in the pathway to life’s adventures. Whatever
the case, trust me; putting the wife, kids, cats, dogs your laptop all
on a plane all at the same time and hoping for a shred of sanity by the
time you settle into your newly adopted country is, well, wishful thinking
at best. Aug./05 |

| The
New Silicon Valley Suburb ~ by Ruth Carlson - If any place knows
the next best thing, it must be Silicon Valley, home of the computer and
Internet revolution. So when I kept hearing about South Bay residents moving
to New Zealand I had to investigate. The buzz started with my neighbor
Kristi Ford, a marketing executive who said she was giving up her career
to become a yoga instructor in New Zealand. Shortly afterwards I heard
that Bardon, a winery owner, had purchased a place in Christchurch to live
in half the year. Then I toured a house on the market, because, you guessed
it, the couple was moving to New Zealand. |

Not-So Important Answers To Some Important Questions! about Living In New
Zealand ~
by Rick Adams - Happy New Year! There are no poisonous snakes or Wal-Marts
in New Zealand. To some people that may be a redundant sentence (and when
I say “some people” I mean my wife Sandy and I). But as far as we’re
concerned those are two great reasons to move here. That also answers two
of the thoughtful and important questions that I have received about becoming
expatriates living in New Zealand. Jan/05 |

New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - During the Depression, young, and
without clear direction, he had done a stint with the Army in Panama. Then,
he enlisted in the Navy. When War II began, he found himself on a destroyer,

down the ship stopped at an unknown (to him) island to let the sailors
have a little R&R before heading into battle. March/04 |

Lavoie - The Coromandel is New Zealand’s playground. A region of rugged

area you can go swimming, surfing, fishing, yachting, Jun/05 |

The country that invented bungee jumping is the same place that offers

rafting provide thrilling rides, it was a trip to Waitomo Caves that will

Estate in New Zealand ~
As a property investor, you like most are probably looking for excellent
value today as well as solid projected medium to long term growth. It is
clear that New Zealand and Aukland in particular is set for some major
population growth. Add to this its healthy economy, desirable lifestyle,
lack of land in the Auckland region and currently low property prices,
relative to other major cities in the region and you have a location that
should continue to see some excellent capital returns for property investors.

The Dream, A New Zealand Families Sailing Adventures ~
by John & Vickie Billingham - 3 years ago now, the urge to travel again
became overwhelming. We were doing particularly well in our adopted
home, the small but picturesque town of Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand,
with a beautiful B&B lodge, successful computer centre and my wife,
Vickie's founding participation in a comedy theatre troupe. But we
decided that the time had come for a change, definitely against our better
judgment financially! So, the decision being made, we began the process
of selling up all we owned and preparing to move on. The same had
happened whilst we were living in Malaysia. We had spent 6 years
building a solid financial base, I with a yachting Company and Vickie the
head of an international school in Kuala Lumpur, when the wanderlust struck.

Time with an Overseas B&B - Ron Winkles and his wife run a
Bed and Breakfast establishment in the Czech Republic. They spend about
six months of each year in the US and six months in the Czech Republic.
Ron writes, "Our return on investment has run about 5 to 8 percent annually,
and we have had a great time making a little more than stateside CD rates
while earning a nice tax write off. I was audited once by the IRS, the
agent was curious and could not believe a retired couple earning $55,000
a year could afford to live in America and own a villa in Europe. Jokingly,
I told him we saved money by not shopping in Wal-Mart." |

| Live,
Retire, or Profit in New Zealand - New Zealand is one of my favorite
places in the world. It’s a lot like the western coast of the United States,
only turned upside down. The North Island is tropical, like San Diego…the
South is cool, like Portland or Seattle. As a California native,
I have a funny requirement when looking for a place to live, work, or “retire.”
It’s this: I look to see whether or not avocados grow there. You see, avocados
like it warm...with lots of sunlight. So do I. So if they grow there, I
know I’ll at least like the weather. Avocados grow very well in northern
New Zealand. by Rick Rule [From The Best Of International Living] |

Adventures In New Zealand ~
by Candy Green - A sense of place and belonging is certainly shaken when
oceans separate. I wrote of this last month with regards to Washington
Irving’s Sketchbook which brought healing between the new American nation
and its mother country, England, during the early days following the Revolution.
It was the desire for the restoration of friendship that made the difference.
These thoughts have been inside me as I have finished this first year of
grief in an adopted land, often opposed to what is happening in the powerful
land of my birth. July/04 |

plays during a ride in which little dolls dressed in national costumes

I would be faced with the tiresome dilemma of what to do with all my stuff.
I quickly decided that "stuff" was meaningless in the grand scheme of life.
But I didn’t want to give it all up. I wanted to keep my favorite books,
my practically new Swedish foam mattress, and all the things I had collected
since college. I couldn’t afford a storage unit (could barely afford to

| The
Magic Of New Zealand ~
by Rick Adams - Springtime in New Zealand is a magical time. It seems
like everything is green and everything is blooming. The trouble
with that is that’s exactly how winter, summer and fall seem as well.
At least that what it looks like to us! Oh sure, some plants that
bloom in the winter wouldn’t be caught dead showing their flowers in the
summer. But overall, there are a lot of things growing year-round
in New Zealand. That probably explains why there are more nurseries
here than gas stations. Everyone (including – believe it or not –
me!) has a green thumb in New Zealand or so it would seem. Oct/04 |
