Many
people get the names and the locations confused. Guyana, French Guiana,
& Suriname. The name Suriname may derive
from a Taino (Arawak-speaking) group called "Surinen" who first inhabited
the region prior to European arrival. Originally, the country was spelled
Surinam by English settlers who founded the first colony at Marshall's
Creek, along the Suriname River, and was part of a group of colonies known
as Dutch Guiana. It's now called Suriname, and they speak Dutch, [officially].
Guyana,
or The Co-operative Republic of Guyana [officially] was previously known
as British Guiana, not to be confused with Ghana, Guinea, or French Guiana.
French
Guiana, (French: Guyane or Guyane française) sits next to Suriname
[see map] Not to be confused with Guyana or French Guinea; is a French
speaking nation. It has borders with two nations, Brazil to the east and
south, and Suriname to the west. All three nations are sleepers, and ripe
for expat relocation. What's stopping it? It is rather humid
in all three nations, and the humidity has been a deterent, weather is
hot and humid throughout the year. All three nations are interesting
environmentally, and prices are cheap, realitively speaking. See how they
are located on the map to the left. French Guiana is a special case.
It's an interesting place. Sadly we have only one article on French
Guiana. If any expats are living there we would welcome some information
to add to the this page. The lack of forthcoming expat articles may be
because the expats are probably French and subject to a hideous form of
xenophobia which is based on the mistaken French belief in their own superiority.
They gave Pol Pot a start, created Devils Island, cannot make a car, think
Mao was profound, and eat frogs . . . how can anyone question their superiority?

Designing
A Shipping Container As Nomadic Housing
- Global Nomadic Housing for expats? Why not? Design
your living space & workshop and take it with you... Maverick
designer Colin Reedy tells us how. In this the second part of this innovative
concept Colin provides drawings of what a shipping container can be turned
into. The finished product is amazing! You can use this concept
to turn a shipping container into a portable dwelling that you can cheaply
ship anywhere in the world. It's sort of like global backpacking
with your own house. Colin provides details on how to build one yourself.
This series originally appeared almost two years ago in Escape From America
Magazine. It engendered thousands of letters to the editor, a couple
of spin-off articles by others who were living in Container Housing, and
some like articles in other magazines. It's one of our favorite articles.

Unique
Housing for Global Nomads - Tiny Tumbleweed House -Conventional
housing, the kind with four plain walls and a mortgage, doesn’t appeal
to everyone, especially the inveterate global nomad. If we wanted safe
and normal, we’d stay at home in the first place. But once we hit the road,
we need an escape plan. Whether it’s for a month or for the rest of our
lives, we need somewhere to sleep, hide from the weather and generally
nest. These days, downsizing is more than a trend; it’s a necessary part
of survival whereby smaller is better. The era of 2000 square foot McMansions
is over and many will not lament its passing. Smaller, specialized housing
leads to big savings on energy and building materials. With efficient housing,
size does matter – it costs much less to maintain 200 square feet than
2000 square feet. |

Christmas
Past in Guyana by Noah Banks - Christmas was
first observed on a regular basis in Guyana when the Dutch immigrants made
permanent settlements there, celebrated first in Essequibo about 1616,
then in Berbice in 1627, and much later, in 1746, in Demerara. After the
British, in 1796, occupied these three settlements and eventually unified
them in to one colony, called British Guiana, in 1831. At the time of unification
in 1831, the largest ethnic group in the country was the Africans. A small
proportion of them were free, while the overwhelming majority were slaves
who provided most of the labour for the Whites' sugar, coffee and cotton
plantations. Slaves had been brought from Africa to Guyana since the early
decades of the 17th century and the institution of slavery continued until
full emancipation was granted on August 01, 1838. Christmas was a
popular season during the slavery era for most of the population with the
notable exception of the Amerindians who lived for the most part in scattered
communities in the hinterland.

Guyana,
USA Website - This site is dedicated to the legal incorporation
of Guyana into the United States, and pays special attention to the advantages
that would flow to the United States and to Guyana if Guyana were to become
a state, territory or possession of the United States. Guyana, formerly

Guyana is about the size of the state of Idaho. There's only 600,000
people left there. They've all come to the USA. The time has
come to make Guyana a state, territory, possesion or legally incorporated

Devil's
Island Sailing From Brazil to French Guiana By James Baldwin
- SSeven miles off the coast of French Guyana lies the ex-penal colony
of Devil’s Island. For anyone who has seen the movie Papillon, the very
name - Devil’s Island - conjures up scenes of immense suffering and dramatic
escape attempts. I had long awaited a chance to discover for myself the
myths and truths of this much-maligned island. But as it lay hundreds of
miles against wind and current from the Caribbean waters I grew up sailing
in, my pilgrimage there had to wait many years until I approached it from
the east when my voyage around the world was nearly complete. Even as light
favorable winds and the Guyana Current swept me gently along the coast
from the Amazon Delta towards French Guyana, I never guessed this notorious
little island and its two neighboring islands, known collectively as Iles
du Salut, would still prove so difficult to escape from. However, before
reaching the islands, I first made a provisioning stop on the mainland.
Besides the alluring Devil’s Island, for the adventurous sailor there are
many places of interest on the mainland. The Oyapok River, which borders
Brazil, is navigable far into the hidden interior rain forest. At the other
end of the country, the Moroni River, bordering on Suriname, is occasionally
visited by yachts heading for the old penal colony town of St. Laurent.
Sailing alone and without an engine, I reluctantly confined my explorations
to the two main ports only.

Adventures
In Suriname: Into The Jungle - Suriname -
I suppose the irresistible lure enticing me there was the chance, an off
chance at that, to be dropped off by a small plane in the middle of its
tangled jungles and left to my own devices. Or maybe it was the country’s
almost total obscurity. One ticketing agent - supposedly a South American
‘specialist’ - wanted to know where exactly Suriname was. I promised to
send her a map and continued making calls. I’ve always been drawn to the
obscure because it’s a primary requisite for exploration, not that I had
any grandiose notions of making any significant discoveries, except perhaps
about myself. The series of flights that would eventually terminate at
its capital, Paramaribo, started off predictably enough.
I’d been through Miami International so many times I practically knew every
carpet stain. But the second stopover in Haiti proved sobering, decades
of neglect and despair obvious even from miles up. Whole mountains had
been denuded from base to peak.

Adventures In Surinam - Explorations
- I had little success fishing the first several days, but there was plenty
of food, and just about the first time I thought someone to share my rum
with might be nice I had a surprise encounter with Garifuna bushmen - long
removed progeny of nineteenth century slaves who, seeing the Guiana’s striking
similarities to the jungles of their Congo origins, escaped their captors
by simply vanishing into the wilderness where to this day many thrive unhindered,
a feral society. Coming up over the ‘tall trees’ trail I swore I heard
human laughter. Suddenly four sparsely dressed fellows appeared and froze
in their tracks, as did I. Smiling, I motioned them to the lean-to where
I made various unintelligible offerings and possibly inappropriate inquiries.
One of them spoke some Pigeon English, and I think he figured out that
I was here alone, but couldn’t imagine where I might have come from. They
had no interest in my rum, food or even fishhooks, and I didn’t have any
ganga, so must have appeared a useless host. Eventually they went on about
their business down by their boats, and before nightfall they had vanished.
