So
you have decided to leave your current home and settle in another country.
You
have already packed up and left this country behind you in your favourite
fantasy, and you can visualise the little chair on the balcony overlooking
the beach, and the glass of local red wine, that is waiting there for you..............
WAIT A MINUTE! Do you already know where you want to live when you reach
your destination in Paradise? Or are you planning to book a cheap package
holiday week, spend a couple of days looking around, and then buy the perfect
little residence on the spot? Well, we all have fantasies, but this is
real life, and things are not always that easy. A little forward planning
will help you achieve your dream of living in paradise that much easier
than if you leave things to chance. First of all, take time to decide what
kind of property you would like to buy, and discuss your ideas with your
partner or family. After all, your idea of what Paradise is made of may
not be the same as theirs! You may want a little stone house way up in
the mountains with half an acre of land and a few chickens, your wife may
want an apartment by the beach, with it's own pool to the side, and the
kids may want to live in town so they do not have far to travel to school
and the local cinema. Share your ideas and listen to theirs, and be highly
delighted if you can reach a reasonable compromise within a few days without
a major family disagreement. - Buying

American
In Greece - Working In Greece
- As an American, can I live and work in Greece? Well, in brief yes if
you are of Greek descent, and yes to the first and no to the second if
you are not. This little treatise is not directed at those who have Greek
heritage but rather those wishing to live in Greece (specifically Crete)
without having to work here. Because America is outside the European Union,
Americans can not freely take up a job here. The procedure for getting
employment in Greece is complex. But for those wishing to retire in Greece
or simply enjoy what we believe to be a highly desirable lifestyle, there
is indeed a fully legal way for an American to live permanently in Greece.
And of course if you have an Internet-based business, you could still operate
that from here! Enough of the brevity … let’s get down to the full
story. First of all, I am writing from Crete and can speak little of what
we call “the other Greece.” Crete has a long history of fierce independence
and although we are part of Greece, we value our strong and independent
spirit. And we believe Cretans to be far more hospitable than any other
Greeks, and of course Greece is well known for its hospitality.

Fire
in the Kitchen - Living On A Greek Island - Living in Greece-
As a single woman, I never was much of a cook when I lived in California's
Silicon Valley. But when I moved to Spetses, a small Greek island in the
Saronic Gulf eighteen months ago, it seemed a good idea to learn. It's
hard for Americans to find work here, especially in the winter when the
tourist economy suffers, so I figured if I could learn to prepare my own
meals I could save a few drachmas and eat more often. Also, options for
fast food are a little limited. Actually, we don't have any. My friends
have all been real good about letting me come over and watch them cook.
Most families' mothers start cooking in the morning for the main, mid-day
meal. So I can go over for a coffee in the morning, pinch their leftovers
from the hot meals they cooked the day before (one friend has a microwave!),
and sit at their kitchen tables while their kids are in school, sipping
my coffee with my chin in my hand while I watch them work.

Living
the Life on the Island of Rhodes - Driving you Crazy - Driving on Rhodes
- Ron Ferguson says Greece supposedly has the highest rate of traffic fatalities
of any European country. This article is about how to not become
one of them and other driving related facts. To begin with you have to
bear in mind that unless you understand the culture and thinking of Greek
drivers you have little chance of anticipating their moves.
So let's begin with some simple facts ... Most of the fatalities happen
on the mainland so if you are living on an island you cut down the odds.
Most Greek men drive as if they owned the whole road. Around half
of the Greek women driving cars on the islands don't have a license.
Most have no insurance. Keep these points in mind.

The
Fun Lovers Guide to IOS - One of the Rockin' Greek Isles
- The beautiful Greek islands, synonymous with the pursuit of wisdom, the
birthplace of democracy the evolvement of language, a country drenched
in historical profundity. Great builders, great thinkers, (great lamb!)
. . . and then there’s IOS. Part of a group of islands in the Mediterranean
known as the Cyclades, Ios is about a 7 hour ferry ride from Athens, and
an hour’s ferry from Santorini. Ios has a predominantly rocky coastline
with a profusion of olive trees, charmingly topped with windmills overlooking
the turquoise Aegan sea. Though relatively mild all year round, the meltemmie
winds can be brutal in high season, sending beach chairs flying, and even
capsizing small watercraft. But the waters are clear, deep and inviting,
perfect forsnorkeling or cliff-diving in the cool depths of one of the
many surrounding coves. Upon arrival by sea, one is greeted by the charming
twinkle of Yialos (port) lights nestled serenely among craggy cliffs.
Upon arrival at the docks, however, all guise of peacefulness evaporates
as throngs of smiling Greeks and workers (tourists who are annually employed)
surround you, each heralding why their hostel, hotel or bed &
breakfast is the best, cleanest and most reasonably priced accommodation
on the island.

The
Ionian Islands - The Ionian Islands
are among the most beautiful places in Greece. Otherwise called the Eptanese
islands (Greek for seven islands), Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxi, Zakynthos,
Ithaka and Kithira are all blessed by nature with lush greenery and some
of the most amazing beaches in the Mediterranean region. All the islands
are popular with the yachting community, who often travel from one island
to another; therefore it’s not unusual, especially during the summer season,
to see each and every harbour full of yachts and sailing boats. However
it is still quite easy to visit all of them, even for those who are not
lucky enough to own their own boat! As many will agree, it is really difficult
to determine which island is the most beautiful, despite the similarities
they may have. However, each has something unique to offer.

Thinking
Of Moving To The Greek Islands? - Thoughts On 10 Years Of Experience Overseas
- Have you been visiting Corfu for years, feel sick of the rat race at
home, and are contemplating buying your dream home in the sun? Do you revel
in the warm spring sunshine, feel seduced by the laid back way of life
and want to enjoy these pleasures for the rest of your life? Before you
track down all the local Real Estate agents and pay a fortune for an old
building that you intend to restore into your dream home on Paradise island,
stop and think twice. Make yourself a frothy coffee, or something stronger,
pull up your favourite armchair, plump up the cushions, settle down comfortably,
and think about the following questions... Why do you want to leave your
current home and move overseas? Do you want to retire to a quieter, stress
free way of living? Do you long for endless summer days when all you have
to do is soak up the sun and a few afternoon cocktails? Have you always
dreamt of living abroad, and have waited for the family to fly the nest
before you have been able to consider it? Are the current levels of crime
and taxation driving you to somewhere with a lower cost of living and a
higher quality of life?

Traveling
To North Western Greece Discovering The Land Of Macedonia
- Since I’ve been living in the capital of Greece, Athens, for most of
my life up until now, the chance of traveling to other parts of my country
always seems like a good idea whenever I have the opportunity. The
opportunity this time was the Greek Orthodox Easter Holiday at the end
of April 2005: I wanted a first class getaway to the countryside. We had
four days of holiday, just the right amount of time for taking an excursion
by car to the north in order to spend Easter at the town of Kastoria in
Macedonia; from Kastoria, we could take daytrips to the north western borders
of Greece. The trip was settled with a couple of friends apt as well
for adventure and so we hit the road to our destination Kastoria, 590 kms
north from Athens.

What
Does the Financial Crisis in Greece Mean for Greek Real Estate?
- The financial crisis in Greece is of course hugely disheartening
for Greek nationals and those with relatives who live and work in the country.
It also has ramifications for property sales in Greece and the real estate
market as a whole. The Greek financial crisis is sure to be on the minds
of those who want to sell property in Greece as well as those who plan
to buy Greek property. They will no doubt wonder if this far-reaching economic
turmoil will also reach out and affect the real estate market. Doubtless
it will in some ways, but a property crash is not on the cards. It is helpful
to remember that Greece is only one of the many countries in the EU to
be facing a large budget deficit as a result of spending to try to deal
with this uncertain economic period. But other countries that have been
affected, such as Spain, have seen light at the end of the tunnel and a
property market that has already begun to bounce back.

Want
to Live in Europe? - Consider Corsica -
When most people think of France, they probably imagine the hexagonal country
mashed in the middle of continental Europe and its stunning capital city
Paris. Although this does make up the most populous bulk of the country,
France also consists of many overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Tahiti,
etc.) as well as one of the largest, most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean
Sea: Corsica (”La Corse”). The French call Corsica ”l’Ile de
Beauté” (the island of beauty) and it truly is a place of inspiring
landscapes and stunning geography. Unlike the French Riviera which
has basically turned into one gigantic strip of unbridled concrete sprawl,
the Corsican coastline is still virtually unspoiled, with limited construction
allowed only in major cities or very small fishing towns that have been
there for centuries. In fact, if you try to build a vacation house
too close to the coastline in Corsica, it is actually not an uncommon occurrence
for the local Corsican populace to blow it up during the off season.
A few suggestions before embarking on a building project in Corsica would
include: having a Corsican or Italian sounding name - acquiring a good
standing with the local population by helping to “finance” a project of
public interest (something more consequential than a public bench).
