Should
we be surprised that there's money in Cuba? Imagine
that you are rich Spaniard or an Italian with a huge multi-national corporation
that makes millions. You want a Caribbean hideaway -- so you choose
Cuba. Where else? To some US or UK government controlled Caribbean
island where your business is common knowledge to everyone? In Cuba,
you've got one of the most secure spots on earth. (This based on
the very probable supposition that anyplace safe from US Government snooping
is the only safe place to be.) I very much agree with that.
There is no crime in Cuba. (Whoops the US government left that out
when they told you Cuba was a Rogue State.) Even foreigners get excellent
medical treatment in Cuba at a price lower than anywhere else in the world
based on what you get for what you pay. (A large number of non-Cuban
foreigners specifically travel to Cuba for medical treatment, as they get
'First World' medicine at bargain basement prices.) Okay, the US
government left that part out too. But they're the ones who've blockaded
Cuba and pushed her into a economic corner. Well, it is easy to admit
that Castro could have done better things with the economy and civil liberties
while Russia had the island on welfare and he had a free lunch; but he
was too busy being a firebrand, add to that the fact that Communism and
Civil Liberties don't mix. An engineered society must be a restricted society
by definition. That aside, this isn't a political document, it's
an announcement of the fact that you can live in Cuba, and live quite well.

Caribbean
Destinations : Discover Cuba, Part 1 By Raquel B Tejeda
- Cuba, that grand island of mystery, is also a land of timeless
beauty, an eco-paradise, the land that time forgot and an other-worldly
sort of travel experience as one feels as though they are stuck in a time
warp…but certainly a most enchanting one. The largest Caribbean
island, Cuba is all you can dream of and a much more. Pulsating with sensual
music, endless sandy beaches, captivating culture, old-age architecture,
welcoming locals, and delicious food it is the sort of time warp experience
you’ll never want to leave. This is the largest of the Caribbean islands,
which is about the size of England. It lies to the west of the Greater
Antilles group and about a quarter of its terrain is mountainous. Cuba
consists of the main island, the Isle of Youth and about 4,195 Cayes, commonly
known as Cayos. Cuba is 140 kilometers from the Bahamas and 180 kilometers
from Florida. It’ 13,000,000 inhabitants predominantly speak Spanish.

Cuba:
Medical Tourism Shines Bright Light On Medical Negligence
- According to an article today in the Miami Herald, “Sudden Death of 11
Cuban cancer patients called medical negligence”, relatives are claiming
that these patients were given serums for chemotherapy in a hospital in
the USA. If Cuba hopes to attract medical tourists they will have to do
so by reputation and not rely on marketing campaigns. Stories like
this that might otherwise ‘go quietly into the night’ will instead be kept
alive by medical tourism social networks publishing 1st hand accounts and
reports pertinent to consumers searching for trusted medical care resources
abroad. Tags: Cuba

Cuba
-The Next Expat Property Hotspot? - There
are countless articles floating around about Cuba's potential to become
the next property hotspot - some imply that lifting travel restrictions
on American tourists will kick start a rise in property prices as they'll
fall for Havana's faded charms, or the beautiful Caribbean beaches, and
want a piece for themselves - so what's the reality? Two hurdles stand
in the way of a real estate boom in Cuba (three if you include the need
for a stable, democratically elected government). Allowing American tourists
in won't make a difference to the country's property market. In fact, tourist
numbers hit an all-time high this year. This country's a mainstream destination
for Canadians and Europeans. Cuba received more than a million tourists
in the first four months of 2010. That's double the number during the same
period in 2009. Tourism minister Manuel Marrero released the figures at
a tourism fair in Havana this month. He also spoke about government plans
to boost real estate development, and specifically tourism amenities--marinas,
spas, and golf courses.

- Then & Now: Reminiscence & Analysis of The Changes in Cuba Over
the past Five Years By Doug Casey - Most of
the changes in Cuba have really just taken place since January 1998, when
the Pope visited. The direct result of his visit was several hundred million
much needed dollars flowing into Cuba, but more important it served to
legitimize the place to many who were used to thinking of it mainly as
a tropical gulag. I know the whole world loves the avuncular John
Paul II, and certainly he’s a far cry from people like Alexander VI, as
popes go. But popes have never been friends of either free minds or free
markets, as JPII evidenced in his most important sermon in Havana, where
he excoriated the evils of classical liberalism, “which subordinates the
human person to blind market forces and conditions the development of peoples
to those forces”. It’s amazing he’d say something as dim as that, implying
that wise, selfless, and judicious bureaucrats are needed to approve commerce
between consenting adults. And say it while in Cuba, of all places.
Of course the Church has always had, at best, a rather mechanistic view
of how the economic world works. Somehow it seems stuck in the 13th century,
which many Catholic theologians still fondly recall as the “greatest” of
centuries, when guilds controlled the marketplace, usury was a crime, the
peasants were quiescent, and Rome pretty well called the shots. My choice,
however, might be its antithesis, the 14th, which overturned the entire
constipated order of the Middle Ages.

From
Santiago de Cuba to Havana in only Three Weeks Music, Rum, Music, Sun,
Fun and More Rum by Linda Thalman from Paris In Sites Newsletter
- At the first step out of the Santiago de Cuba airport on Saturday, 12
February, we salsa-ed through a receiving line of costumed dancers moving
to the beat of Cuban music. And the beat went on and on throughout our
trip from east to west in Cuba. Music morning, noon and night. The són
-- the term for the 'Buena Vista Social Club' type music -- was king in
Santiago de Cuba and we loved it. Sipping our first Mujitos -- rum, sparkling
water, sugar and mint -- on the fourth-floor patio of the Hotel Casa Granda
overlooking the main square and Cuba's Bahia de Santiago and the warm setting
sun -- this was a perfect beginning. Following dinner, the group 'Francisco
y su Piequette' serenaded diners with music on the veranda and later on
Sunday in the Cespedes Park. Simply magnifico! We bought our first Cuban
music cassette. Within minutes of a stroll around the town we were
approached by young Cubans asking if we wanted a restaurant, cigars, a
hotel or any kind of help.

Gaviota,
The Last Cowgirl in Cuba by Kirk Stephan
- I become even more schitzy than usual when I visit Cuba. Comparing the
resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle
society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last
trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first
inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence
of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport
in Cancun. I’d been used to getting some great photos of folk’s faces amidst
the air-conditioning steam that shot out of vents into the cabin just as
the Russian jets of Cubana Airline would leave the runway. Alas, no more
excitement here; Cuba has gone “Euro” with the acquisition of French planes.

Iowa
City Yankee in King Castro’s Court by Kirk Stephan
- From the early 60’s I hadn’t thought much, if any, about Cuba. Nor had
any of my friends, neither my acquaintances. Certainly this was because
of the incredible amount of other news and happenings in the world, and
in retrospect was aided by the politically-motivated press of the times-,
which had no motive for reporting on anything so close and so communist.
So it was quite a surprise to be introduced to the “idea” of Cuba by the
very force commissioned to keep American Citizens OUT of the place. On
a day in May, in 1994, returning from a visit to my daughter, in Belize,
where I’d lived for 12 years some time in the past, and now, divorced and
living alone in the mid-west, and escaping each winter for a month or two,
I was arriving at Houston International Airport.

Great Time in Cuba: Doing Havana Like a Cuban in Cuba article and photos
by Al Dieste - Having just returned
from four weeks in Cuba, three of which were spent in Havana, I would like
to share with your readers the wonderful opportunity to enjoy and discover
a rich and diverse culture, at less-than-Motel 6 prices! Consider
an alternative title to this article as “Vacationing Like a King in Havana
for $50 a Day!” One can spend less in Cuba, if the old college hippie
backpacker, sleep-on-the-floor days appeal to your sense of nostalgia.
One can certainly spend a lot more, if the days of decadent Mafia-Tropicana-drinking-gambling-sin-and-sun-days
appeal to your bulging wallet. However, $50 a day in Havana can provide
a very comfortable vacation, in a style which will not only appeal to your
needs for North American creature comforts, but also allow you to get a
taste of the true Cuba of today.

New
and Exciting Expat Destination - Hopes for Improved Relations between Cuba
and the USA - Hopes are rising for reconciliation
between Cuba and the USA following the election of Barack Obama as president.
The main obstacles to restoring relations are that either the USA would
have to drop demands for democracy on the island, or Cuba would have to
accept and implement them. Both are equally unlikely scenarios with no
obvious middle ground on which to base a compromise. During the presidential
election campaign Obama stated that the current embargo would remain in
place to be used as a bargaining chip to bring about democratic change
in Cuba. However, many political experts suggest that a greater impact
could be achieved by ending the embargo and sanctions which are largely
blamed by the Government to explain the island´s poverty and hardships
the people suffer. Lifting the restrictions would give the population the
opportunity to judge the leaders on their own merits.

parrots like flying rainbows and orchids growing wild are part of the natural
surroundings. "There is an earthy, beckoning presence to this island where
untamed Nature invites the newcomer to walk in her primal rainforests then
enter the caress of her warm mineral baths... Many souls have lost their
hearts to lesser beauty. The riotous abundance of fertile nature dazzles

a perfume. ´Prepare to fall in love, utterly and completely,´
the Island whispers. Prepare to be unwilling to settle for life anywhere
but on this living island."
