Only
the most geographically challenged have never heard of Patagonia, a few
can name a location like San Carlos Bariloche, Argentina
which has been famous with skiers for years and is becoming popular with
world travelers flocking to the Lake District. Beyond Bariloche, the map
of Patagonia is blank. Travel agencies tend to be familiar with resorts
and
adventure travel destinations tend to be only ‘word-of-mouth’ famous. A
secret of the European travelers is the area south of Puerto Montt, Chile.
Finding Highway 7, leading out of Puerto Montt, is not easy, in the labyrinth
of one-way streets and construction street blockages. There is a sense
of accomplishment when you find the unmarked entrance beside the mall and
begin skirting the bay, heading south, along the water or when the tide
is out, the mud & sand flats covered with clam-diggers. A glance to
the left is rewarded by an incredible vision of snow-capped volcanoes,
to your right is blue water and in the distance the island of Chiloe (chill-i-way).
There is a sense of drama in the contrast between the peaks and the expanse
of blue water. The pavement soon runs out - just before the government
highway project sign announcing the paving of Scenic Highway 7, Decima
Region, by Dec 17, 2005. Unfortunately, the contractor didn’t make the
projected date, but in the mix of first, second, and third worlds that
make up the reality of Chile, this failure to make the completion date
was not unexpected. Highway 7 to Hornopiren, has only existed for about
25 years. Before the highway, transportation was by boat or on foot. People
rarely went to the “City”. Life for the population was very isolated with
medical and dental care and education arriving with the Highway - The

than most nations in South America. It is consistently been attractive
for foreign real estate investors and retirees. We believe that real estate
in Chile can be an exceptional investment. You can find space in
Chile to build and make a home – you don’t need to live in the crowded
capital to feel safe or to integrate. Additionally you can travel

Expats
in Chile - Chile is possibly one of the least
talked about expatriate destinations, yet one of the best for expats of
all ages and from all backgrounds. The nation has so much in its
favor – from a good climate to an affordable cost of living, and from a
low crime society to a strong and sustainable economy – that it is really
worth examining if you’re looking for a place to call ‘home’ abroad. Whether
you want to retire abroad, you want to live in a nation where the people
are welcoming and the way of life is suitably laid back, or you want to
travel, teach, study or explore, Chile is worthy of your closer inspection.
To bring the nation alive for anyone researching Chile we’ve interviewed
a handful of Escape Artist readers who have made a new home abroad in this
truly stunning and fascinating country – and as you will see, our readers
tell it like it is, warts and all! - Firstly though, to provide a general
overview of the nation and to introduce you to why it’s really worth a
close look, here are just 10 reasons why Chile is an excellent expat destination.

Another
Look at Emerging Markets - “So much money
has been sloshing around the globe in search of an “above average” return
that even risky assets have been bid up tremendously. At this stage, however,
with new holes in the financial dike showing themselves almost weekly –
more holes, we suspect, than officialdom has fingers – the money flows
are building toward a reversal. This will hammer the emerging markets the
hardest because, historically, in times of crisis, capital packs up its
bags and goes home. When that happens, shares of good companies get sold
at the falling bid simply because the seller must get liquid, whether to
calm his fears or to cover his losses elsewhere. Asset prices become screaming
passengers strapped into a luge ride. “This creates opportunity,
of course. Even though the economies of all the most prospective emerging-market
countries are strong enough to weather any likely storm, their financial
systems aren’t. This is emphatically true in India, China, Brazil, and
other fast-track economies. Even so, when foreign financial capital has
fled, the physical and human capital will remain, it will still be valuable,
and good investments will be cheap in the extreme. But the opportunity
won’t be available for everyone – just the investors who’ve been patient.”

Five
Best Places to Retire in South America - South
America is such an exceptionally vibrant continent, inhabited by passionate
people who live life to the full. As Lonely Planet puts it: “It’s
as though the continent was built for travel.” If you’re currently
exploring your global options in search of the best place to retire, and
you’re looking for a place where you can have a low cost yet high quality
living, South America is home to a handful of nations that you might like
to closely consider. In recent years many South American countries have
experienced significant and sustained economic growth, which has seen at
least the quality of infrastructure improve, if not the quality of life
for many citizens. However, there remains a significant gap between
rich and poor across the continent, and inflation can still be a serious
issue which means that you have to plan your retirement to South America
carefully, and do detailed research into which nation you could most comfortably
call home.

Skiing
or Boarding Chile's Active Volcanoes - Sometimes
we think that ourselves are as big as nature, but only when we surrender
to it we realize how small we are. On the top of an active volcano, able
to explode at any time, you see the mountain at your feet and sense the
grandeur of the untouched nature and realize the human frailty. Still,
you swallow your fears and drop to the craziest drop of your life, in powdery,
virgin snow. You do not see anyone ahead. Just you, the mountains, the
icy wind in your face and the sound of your board cutting the snow.

Chile’s
New Government Initiative Hopes To Attract Foreign Entrepreneurs
- Chile’s Minister of Economy Juan Andres Fontaine touched down in the
United States last month on a mission of great national importance. Fontaine’s
itinerary, however, did not include the usual diplomatic hubs of Washington,
D.C. or New York City. Instead, Fontaine found himself in California’s
Silicon Valley, meeting with dozens of entrepreneurs whom he hopes to lure
back to the Southern Hemisphere with the promise of up to $40,000 in government
funding with very few strings attached for their business idea.

wonder. The reasons are not complex; in fact they are rather straight-forward
and easy to understand. The US government has gone broke. They don't want
you to go away with your money, they want to steal it.

Why
Invest In Chile? A North American In Chile
- Why invest in Chile? That is a question I have been asked many times
because Chile is not even mentioned in most conversations about South America.
Brazil you think of beautiful beaches and the beautiful people that live
there. Peru you think of mysteries from the long lost past. Ecuador makes
you think of beautiful weather and inexpensive prices on land and exports.
Argentina cheap land, good fishing and a very corrupt government. Columbia,
well, you don't even think about it. Venezuela another hero of the little
people and probably a nightmare for everyone else. But Chile, what's there?
I would say a vibrant free market economy, and a place where with a little
money and elbow grease you can make a life for yourself in the sun, be
respected for doing so, and not have it taxed away into thin air when you're
done. Chile has been the fastest growing economy in the Western Hemisphere
for the last six years running and there really is no indication that trend
will change in the near future. Also see the article: EscapeArtist.com

How
To Buy A Vineyard - 9 Artices About Owning, Managing & Living On A
Vineyard - With all the risks and the time
factor, can it be a good investment, from purely a financial perspective?
The basic laws of economics are still favoring Argentina and will for a
while. A vineyard in Napa Valley costs 10 or 15 times what a comparable
one does in Argentina, yet the best Argentine wines are starting to command
respectable prices. “Vineyard prices will never be what they are in California
or Italy,” English says, “but they are certainly moving up toward a middle
ground.” The value of some prime land has doubled in value in 12 months.
That can’t last, but many think that 30% a year is probably realistic for
quite a few years to come—if the buyer’s price was not inflated to start
with. Many think that Argentina’s best years are still ahead of it. The
overall quality is still improving, the word is still getting out, and
a lot of production is still tied up in making cheap jug wine and concentrate.
Argentina exported less than 1 percent of its harvest in 1992. In 2005
the percentage was up to 16 percent—still a low number by international
standards. So all those Argentine wines on store shelves and in restaurants
abroad still represent a very small portion of what’s possible. - The Articles

Trials
And Treasures In Patagonia - Adventures In The South Of Chile
- Rivers in Patagonia run wild. Few bridges cross the glacier-fed streams
and our group was having difficulty locating a safe crossing spot. The
Nadis River had only grown deeper and wider as our expedition journeyed
further into the secluded valley in southern Chile. Now twenty people were
faced with the daunting task of crossing a rapid-moving river. Numerous
attempts were made the previous day, but all scouting parties were forced
back by impassable waters. Our options were running out. The guides
contemplated setting up a tyrolean traverse, but it seemed unlikely that
even they could swim the powerful river. We could continue upstream, but
it would take us days off schedule. Our group had not yet been turned back
and failure was not acceptable so early in our expedition. Now, our
first great challenge rumbled before us. Two days of scouting had revealed
only one potential route. Having joined the scouting party’s first attempt,
I knew the challenges they faced. In the deepest spots the water would
rise above every person’s waist and the current was strong enough to send
a whole team swimming.

Teaching
English In Chile - English As A Second Language
- The globalization of the economy has had a direct impact on the Chilean
people to learn and be conversant in English. In this article I will explain
why and talk about visa options for tourists interested in teaching English.
Without a doubt English is the international language. Although other languages
such as French, Spanish, and even Chinese represent a large population
and may be diplomatic in nature, business and diplomacy are carried out
in English. Up until 1973 Chile’s economy was closed in the sense that
the major industries such as mining were national and foreigners could
not invest. This changed under the Pinochet government and since then the
country has been “invaded” by investors from all over the world. Take the
mining industry for example. There are currently many joint ventures based
in the mineral rich north of the country consisting of Chilean and foreign
partners. Many investors come from Canada as well as Australia and whose
native language is English. Another industry which has been opened
up and heavily invested in is the maritime industry. The Japanese have
been the principal investors in this industry. They have provided technological
infrastructure to improve harvesting cycles of natural water fish and seafood
in the south. Also see: "Teaching

Real
Estate Business Opportunities in Chile -
Hola from Chile! Our last article concerned Chile's interest in attracting
"Smart Capital." Since that article hit cyber-space, we were again over-run
with requests for more detailed how-to information such as finding employment
and / or business investment opportunities here in Chile. Also, in addition
to these requests, many readers asked about Visa requirements and how to
obtain permanent residency in Chile. Unexpectedly, many of the people who
contacted us were from within Chile. These were people who actually have
business or job opportunities available! We had already known of a few,
but WOW! If anyone out there is interested, we just might have the connection
for whatever type of business or occupation you may be seeking or perhaps,
at the very least, we might be able to point you in the right direction.
With this in mind, we talked it over and decided to expand on the “Opportunities
in Chile” theme a bit in order to more fully support our readers, including
the people we had no idea about, those who are already living and working
IN Chile. Sheesh, what a surprise! Also see the article: Become

Paddling
The Pathways Of Patagonia ~ Deep In The Heart Of Patagonia
- Adventure Begins - Patagonia. For years that word has conjured fantasies
in my mind, visions of sheer granite walls and isolated wilderness. Flying
south over the Andes I could hardly contain my excitement as I paced the
aisles of the plane attempting to gain a better view of the snow-capped
peaks that formed the border between Argentina and Chile. Like so many
explorers, I had anticipated this day for as long as I could read the words
on my father’s jacket and now I had reached a land that had once seemed
so remote, so forbidding and so impossible. I would be venturing into one
of the world’s great wilderness areas with a group from the National Outdoor
Leadership School. Our guides hailed from the countries of Ecuador, Brazil
and the United States and between the three, there was hardly a place in
North or South America they had yet to explore. Yet each agreed that no
place rivaled our playground deep in the heart of Patagonia.

Moving
To Chile, Part Two - Chile Measured Up!
- Wow-and-a-Half! We have had the most amazing month! First of all, a big
Chilean "Hola!" to all of our new-found friends. We do not want to forget
anyone. We have received emails from people living all over the world -
from the US to Latvia as well as England, Afghanistan, India and....well
we are absolutely flabbergasted by the many people who have extended a
hand in friendship. We are overwhelmed and overjoyed. Thank You, Thank
You, THANK YOU! It was also very interesting to see some of the demographics
that told us where all our visitors were coming from. California, as expected
with its large population and high Real Estate prices, ranked first, but
Canada and Virginia were way up on the list as were Washington State, the
UK and Colorado. We did also wonder about the slew of hits to our website
from the DOD (Department of Defense) in Ohio. Honestly because we received
quite a few and our visitors were sticking around for a fairly long time.
We wonder if they know something we don’t. Maybe we were simply getting
checked out as well as visited. Also see the article: Moving

Banking Secrets
- Why Bank Offshore? - The Governments of the world are out of control
. . . and broke. They need your assets to make themselves solvent.
That they squander those assets is forgone. We live in a world where personal
sovereignty, privacy and individuality are under attack. The right to privacy
is more than an abstract necessity, it is also a psychological necessity.
If we do not have the right to privacy, we do not own the rights to our
own lives. Individuality entails making value judgments independent of
political, religious or social dogmas. In making value judgments
we make choices. In today's world, if the choices we make differ
from the status quo then we come under pressure to 'toe the line'. There
is no line to toe. We live in an intellectual vacuum, where short
of the logical choices we make in our own behalf, there are no other values.
Our Magazine & Websites stress privacy and living our life by our own
standards, protecting what is ours from those who have not earned
it. - In today’s technological world, millions of individuals are subject
to privacy threats. Companies are hired not only to watch what you visit
online, but to infiltrate the information and send advertising based on
your browsing history. People set up accounts for Facebook; enter bank
and credit card information to various websites. Those concerned about
Internet privacy often cite a number of privacy risks — events that can
compromise privacy — which may be encountered through Internet use.

About My Children Returning From a US Vacation as Bitter Expat Kids
- I’m nervous and scared. Okay, I said it out loud. I’m
feeling pretty vulnerable, second-guessing my decisions, which definitely
is not a natural state for me. My in-laws have recently, very generously
bought tickets to fly my kids, ages 10, 8 and 6, back to the US on a direct
flight for a six week vacation. In the two years since I have moved
my family down to Argentina, we have never been back to the states for
a visit. So, for a lot of obvious reasons, this is an amazing opportunity
for my kiddos and all of the extended family which I should be completely
grateful for, and in many ways I am. I get 6 weeks without kids,
(which has never, ever happened in my ten years of being a mom!!).
Six weeks of space, six weeks of quiet, yummy me-time. I have the
chance to do some solo traveling through Bolivia that I have wanted to
do for a long time, channeling my inner gypsy that has been screaming to
get out for a while now. My kids get 6 weeks hanging out with aunts,
uncles, cousins, grandparents, great-grandparents, getting completely spoiled
and loved on beyond belief…and this is where I begin to think maybe way
too much…

But it has only been since the development of the modern nation-state,

expatriation has taken on significant tax consequences. One of the first
tax advisors to appreciate the potential tax savings of expatriation was
my friend and colleague, Marshall Langer J.D., a valued member of The Sovereign

the respected author of several major international tax treatises. He is
also the daring creator of a now out-of-print book, The Tax Exile Report.
This title gained international notoriety when the late U.S. Senator Daniel

List
Of Offshore Banks - An offshore bank is defined
by its location, or 'jurisdiction'. An offshore bank is usually located
outside of the depositors country of residence, typically within a jurisdiction
that levies very low taxes, or no taxes at all. Each jurisdiction
varies in its degree of taxation, its degree of privacy, and its services.
Offshore banks located in politically and economically stable jurisdictions
provide a safe-haven for assets that may be at risk in the nation in which
the investor lives and holds residency.

How
to Maintain Asset Privacy Within the US By Bobby Casey, Global Wealth Protection
- With asset protection planning, anonymity seems to be the number one
concern for people these days. And rightly so. Any 11 year
old with a laptop can easily do an online record search and find your bank
accounts and their balances, your vehicle registrations, your real estate
assets, your credit report, your residence history and even your driving
record. Many clients are interested in anonymity and asset protection.
In some cases clients confuse the two. They think that anonymity
is asset protection. It is not, but anonymity does have benefits.
When forming an FLP (family limited partnership) or an LLC (limited liability
company), the strength of the entity is dependent upon the state of formation,
the quality of the operating agreement and the business purpose of the
entity. -

Hedgefund
Manager’s Report from China - I am writing
this from the back of a taxi in Hong Kong’s Central district. My meetings
with assorted bankers, hedge fund managers, Taipans, and the press stretched
on longer than expected, with the result that I am now stuck in rush hour
traffic on the way to the airport. So I might as well use the time productively
and sum up my thoughts on my recent trip to China. When I first cajoled
my way into to the Middle Kingdom in the early seventies, it was in the
back of a broken down truck carrying bags of wheat, no doubt destined to
a thriving black market. We drove down a heavily potholed single lane road
that had not seen serious maintenance since the thirties. -
