As
Americans, born in Canada’s culturally similar next door neighborhood,
we don’t fit the generally understood profile of an immigrant family in
Canada. We’re generally taken for Canadians unless
we mention where we are from. Often it‘s only our Yankee accents that let
people know we’re “from away.” Indeed, few people here actually view us
as immigrants at all. This is because Canadians are so familiar with Americans
and American culture, saturated as the country is with American movies,
television and music. For the most part, Canadians view themselves along
with Americans as fellow “North-Americans” and regard the border as a mere
inconvenience. Canada accepts more immigrants per capita annually than
even the United States, and, like Americans, Canadians view their country
as fundamentally shaped by immigration. In recent decades, the majority
of immigrants to Canada have come from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Only about four or five thousand Americans annually, officially immigrate
to Canada, mostly because of marriage or family ties. My wife and I left
the home and life we had built in the U.S. in the middle of our careers
and while we were starting a family. In this respect, we are unlike many
ex-patriot Americans who are often very young, single people seeking excitement,
or well invested, pensioned retirees looking for the next adventure in
life.. - A

Moving
To Canada - Making A Plan - By now you
may feel you know Canada well, from surfing the internet, or from travel
books and news items you’ve read. You’ve applied for your Permanent Resident
(PR) visa and know it could take up to 2 years to receive it. You’ve been
waiting what seems like an eternity and you don’t feel like waiting any
longer. So you’ve decided to throw caution to the wind and leave early
to start your new life in Canada. If this sounds like a plan you’re making,
then you’re not alone. It would appear there is a strong desire and a growing
trend among people who have submitted their visa applications, to get to
Canada as soon as possible, even if they do not have their PR visa in hand.
Although the excitement of making your move, up to six months earlier than
anticipated, can be a strong motivator to sell all your worldly goods and
go, making your move prematurely could potentially be a costly mistake.

Canada:
A Non-Traditional Tax Haven - Information Series on Second Passports &
Economic Citizenshipe - Whenever I mention
to Canadians that I bring people to Canada as a tax haven, they shake their
heads in disbelief. After all, Canada has a well deserved reputation for
having some of the highest marginal tax rates amongst the OECD countries.
What most Canadians do not realize is that Canada has a well established
regime of tax sheltering to attract new residents that it does not offer
to its indigenous population. With proper pre-immigration tax planning,
wealthy individuals can move to Canada and avoid income and capital gain
tax on their non-Canadian source income and capital gain producing assets.
In addition, since Canada. Does not have an estate tax, it is often
considered as a favorable domicile of choice.

Winter
In Canada - Survival - As I write today, the
temperature is a frigid -31 degrees and snowy, so I feel particularly well
qualified to share my thoughts with you about Canada’s winter experience.
No doubt about it, winter weather conditions in many parts of Canada can
be harsh at times. High windchills, heavy snowfall, blizzards, freezing
rain and extremely cold temperatures all pose a hazard to those travelling
or venturing outside. Some parts of Canada don't get much snow and ice
in winter but many Canadians battle tough weather conditions and slippery
roads for almost six months each year. The ‘white stuff‘ generally starts
to arrive in late October and can often stay around until March or later.
Although winter weather can be harsh, we are fortunate that the truly ‘deep
freeze’ cold snaps tend not to last more than a few weeks at a time and
in many parts of Canada the sun shines all winter long, which is a great
lift for the spirit.

Canada
for Brits - Fleeing Britain For Canada - Deciding
to leave the UK wasn’t a problem for me. Events now unfolding had for years,
long been predicted and here it was finally, actually, happening.
The writing was on the wall and the aware taking heed, it was time to go.
A little more difficult though for my wife, as she has a close family and
aging parents, but for the kids, a son almost 17 and daughter of 12, it
was the start of a lifetimes adventure. Canada had always allured us. The
thought of all that space, the huge land mass, the natural resources, the
healthy living, lumberjacks, bear wrestling, canoes, maple syrup and pancakes
....all the things we had seen on TV and the movies. One could get lost
there - what a wonderful thought. Having a vacation home that could act
as a base camp for exploring North America (or even south), would be fantastic.
And now, with the Internet, and modern communications systems, we could
also operate our business ventures from anywhere on the globe, funding
our dreams as we go.

Home
Buying In Canada - It is often said
that home buying is one of the most stressful times of your life. Well,
after moving countries it should be a piece of cake - right? If your
chosen country is Canada you will find this information an invaluable guide
to help you through the process and make it as pain free as possible. Types
of Houses - There are several different types of housing available: Single
Family - Basically a detached one or two storey building designed for a
single family occupancy. One storey buildings are Bungalows. Most will
have a basement as standard which maybe developed (this means it will finished
to the same standard as the rest of the house). Duplex - This is essentially
a semi-detached building. Again it can be one or more storeys but will
have a common dividing wall. Fourplex - Four apartments together in a block
(2 up, 2 down). Normally rented. Townhouse - Similar to a Terrace, several
two storey houses joined in a row. High Rise Apartments - Multiple apartments
(flats) in a single high rise building. Newer developments in the Cities
are luxurious and expensive with excellent facilities.

Nova
Scotia - Cheap Living And Retirement In Canada's Hidden Paradise
- A beautiful and inexpensive place in North America where oceanfront and
lakeside lots can be had for as little as $10,000 (or a charming 3-bedroom
home on several acres can be yours for under $50,000). Sound like a dream?
It's not. This slice of Heaven does exist. Nestled in the North Atlantic
on Canada's east coast, Nova Scotia is a little-known paradise steeped
in Scottish, Irish and English history. For the potential expatriate or
retiree, Nova Scotia has a lot to offer...inexpensive real estate, a low
cost of living, unspoiled natural environment, friendly people and lifestyle
opportunities to suit virtually every taste. Coastal property prices are
among the lowest in North America and with the local government rolling
out the red carpet to newcomers, it has the potential to become North America’s
next great retirement haven.

How
I Escaped The Greedy Hands Of The Great White North - Escaping Canada
- While the majority of articles on Escape Artist are written from the
American perspective, I thought I would write a few words for the readers
of Escape Artist from the perspective of your quiet neighbours from the
North. I have been reading Escape Artist for several years now, and believe
it’s now time to give back a bit to the site that helped me come to the
conclusion that leaving one’s country permenantly can be a great thing
to do. Why leave Canada? While we have a great standard of living,
it comes at the expense of sky-high taxes. I personally prefer a less invasive
and therefore less expensive form of government and, since I’m no politician,
I’m not in any real position to change the system. That leaves two choices
– endure it and stay, or, wave good-bye to the country of my birth. When
the opportunity came to leave Canada, I embraced it wholeheartedly.
(And let’s not forget snow. I’m not a winter kind of person). For
the past year, I have had the pleasure of calling myself an expat. I’m
not yet an expat retiree, but trust me, I’m working on it.

VANCOUVER
ISLAND - BRITISH COLUMBIA - CANADA - an offshore island paradise within
sight of the US border - Real Estate & Life On Vancouver Island
- Many folks are approaching retirement or have reached that point in their
lives where the same old routine stretching out to oblivion is something
they want to avoid. They are thinking of making changes, doing something
different, living a little. Many are sitting down to computers and roving
the Internet in search of that perfect spot in which to retire. In which
to start a new life and rejuvenate themselves. Images of seductive beaches
in Mexico or Costa Rica slide over their monitors and they picture themselves
already there. Some, a few, will actually go to these lovely places and
have a look. Fewer still will commit to living there. Still, I believe
you should follow your heart and check it out and then be ruled by your
instincts. You never know!

Driving
Canada's Okanagan Wine Trail - With more than
50 vineyards producing ...and counting, the Okanagan Similkameen Valley
is B.C.'s largest wine appellation. This sunny region is a paradise of
fresh local produce, wines, glittering lakes and outdoor activities. After
years of visiting - to ski at Silver Star, Big White, Apex and Sun Peaks
or to golf, this time I'm touring wineries. The chef at Fresco - my first
restaurant stop in Kelowna - looks familiar. Aside from being named Provincial
Restaurateur of the Year, taking home the Best B.C. Wine List award and
earning a coveted four-diamond rating from AAA/CAA, Rod Butters sparks
memories of the kitchen at the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino on Vancouver
Island, Chateau Whistler and two Toronto dining hotspots, Scaramouche and
the Four Seasons Hotel. That he ended up in the Okanagan Valley in interior
British Columbia was no accident. With some 60 producers and counting,
the Okanagan/Similkameen Valley is B.C.'s largest wine appellation.

Expat
Taxes - Offshore Tax Information - Foreign Earned Income Paying Taxes Overseas
- Or, Not Paying Taxes Overseas - Individuals
have been leaving their own land to seek opportunities elsewhere since
the dawn of mankind. But it has only been since the development of the
modern nation-state, and its taxation of the worldwide income of its citizen-residents,
that expatriation has taken on significant tax consequences. One of the
first tax advisors to appreciate the potential tax savings of expatriation
was my friend and colleague, Marshall Langer J.D., a valued member of The
Sovereign Society Council of Experts. Langer is an international tax attorney
and the respected author of several major international tax treatises.
He is also the daring creator of a now out-of-print book, The Tax Exile
Report. This title gained international notoriety when the late U.S. Senator
Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), red-faced and angry, waived a copy of
the book at a televised Senate hearing, denouncing it as “a legal income
tax avoidance plan.” Also see: Running

Never
Pay U.S. Taxes Again - Legally - Expatriation:
It’s been called “the ultimate estate plan” and it’s a legal, step-by-step
process that can lead to the legal right for you to stop paying U.S. or
other national income taxes—forever. In sum, it requires professional consultations,
careful planning, movement of assets offshore and acquisition of a second
nationality. When all that’s done (and done exactly right), you must leave
behind your home country and become a “tax exile” with an established domicile
in a low or no-tax jurisdiction. And, for U.S. citizens, this unusual plan
requires, as a final step toward tax freedom, the formal relinquishment
of citizenship. A drastic plan? You bet. And in truth, there are many other
perfectly suitable offshore strategies that The Sovereign Society recommends
that can result in significant tax savings. These include international
life insurance policies (TSI 1/02)5 and offshore investments made
through retirement plans (TSI 7/03).6 But for U.S. citizens and long-term
residents who seek a permanent and completely legal way to stop paying
all U.S. taxes, expatriation is the only option. Also see the article:

structures into the landscape. The entire property is educational and eye
pleasing. Craftsmen and artisans work in small studios within the complex,
and I was in museum heaven! There is an Apothecary Museum, a Museum of
