Black Orpheus - (Orfeu Negro) There are some films (like Casablanca, Last Tango in Paris, Under the Volcano,) which bring to the screen more than the sum of their parts. In doing so they have somehow crossed over into visual poetry and no longer resemble mere 'entertainment.' There is no question that Black Orpheus is such a film. Filmed during Carnival in 1959 in Rio de Janeiro by Marcel Camus, the story line is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It's intense use of Brazilian Afro-Spiritualistic symbolism as a backdrop to the story is dynamically enhanced with the music of Luis Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The sound track from the film had what is quite possibly the largest impact that any film has ever had on the world of music. The sound track introduced the world to Brazilian music. It is often said of this film that it "bursts onto the screen." Indeed it does. Forty years ago I entered a theater many miles and years away from where I now find myself. Something burst upon the screen, a kaleidoscope of music, dance, city, color and story. My life was forever changed.
