The Dominican Republic is home to the highest mountain range in the entire Caribbean and offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Yet it may be the least-expensive island in the Caribbean when it comes to real estate and cost of living. The northern coast of the DR has long been the most popular spot on the island for tourists, as well as for foreigners looking to buy property. Visitors to this area usually fly into the international airport at Puerto Plata. The town itself, which owes its name (“silver port” in English) to Christopher Columbus (who discovered the island in 1492), is crowded and bustling.Motorbikes are ubiquitous, darting in and out and around.

Living and Working on St.Maarten/St.Martin - By Jim Braye - Being able to live and work on the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin for over ten years gave me a great appreciation for this small (37 sq. miles) Caribbean island. People come to St. Maarten/St. Martin for many different reasons. For me it was a chance to live the adventurous type of Caribbean lifestyle that most people only read about in books. I felt like I was stepping into one of Herman Wouk’s or Jimmy Buffett’s books about adventure in the Caribbean. One of the great things about the island is that it is so multicultural. You can find people from every corner of the planet living on St. Maarten/St. Martin. There are approximately eighty different nationalities living and working together on the island.

Six shots of our vacation back in November 2006 to Loreto, Baja California, looking out over the Sea of Cortez. The fishing boat we took to our own little island with lunch caught fresh from the crystal clear waters, the tree lined streets, the palapa roofed beach hut, the golden red sunset. Now just distant memories but also a reminder during the dark, cold days of winter just what awaits my wife and me when we retire. A year round warm climate and spectacular scenery. It’s just that it will not be to Loreto, Baja California that we will be moving to. Yes, we had a fantastic vacation, great hospitality at the bed and breakfast we stayed at, lovely weather, awesome scenery and views. The thing that put us off was that we realized having viewed a number of plots of land in and around Loreto we felt that eventually it would become just another American ‘sub-division’, albeit with a little more sunshine. Now let me explain something here. I am English, my wife is American, a native of Sherwood, North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was she who made the comment about the town of Loreto becoming a ‘sub division’. This is what put us off buying in Loreto:

Sint Maarten/Saint Martin – The Friendly Island - France and the Netherlands have shared this haven of sand, sea and sun peacefully for more than three centuries. The Dutch call it Sint Maarten and on the French side the signs say Saint Martin. Not that there is a particularly obvious separation. You can drive, or walk, over a border untended and unmarked except for a sign of welcome to one country or the other. St. Maarten/St. Martin is the smallest island in the world to be shared by two sovereign powers and it has been that way since 1648 when France and the Netherlands signed a partition treaty. However, over the years people of many different nationalities have made their home on the island and have influenced its development. Many languages can be heard but English is almost universal. Nevertheless, there is a distinctly different “feel” to each side of the island, which makes for added interest.

Because Belize just isn't like the U.S.A. Or Canada. It does have cheap rum, awe-inspiring ruins, beautiful Caribbean seas, and much more. But the rules are different. The people who make and enforce the rules are different. Sometimes there are no rules. Sometimes there is a set of rules for you, and a different one for everyone else. In a June 19, 1994, letter to the editor of The Reporter, a weekly newspaper in Belize City, a U.S. citizen, John Zelenih, who bought land in Corozal, does 700 words on the trials and tribulations he faced trying to build a house. Zelenih writes about the delays, bribes, and political shenanigans of daily life in Belize. He and his wife, Zelenih says, spent 13 months in a "living hell instead of the paradise we thought it would be."

Saba World Heritage Status Report By L.L. Nazer-Basuil - Saba’s history of occupation and settlement is as diverse as its natural environment. Europeans, believed to have been of Scottish Presbyterian origin, started arriving in the early 17th century at this uninhabited island. Records show that in 1665 there were 54 white settlers on the island and by 1715 their numbers had swelled to 336 with the addition of 176 black slaves. The next milestone was the end of slavery in 1863 when records show the white population at 1,099 with 708 free colored people. The year 1915 saw the population at its maximum at almost 2,500. Each subsequent year showed a decline due to economic emigration to the oil refineries of nearby Aruba and Curacao. Between 1920 and 1930 Saba became known as the "Island of Women" as the shrinking population comprised mostly females who upheld the island's economy by making lace. In 1987 its total population stood at 1,130, currently it is just under 2,000.

Comparing the resilience and vitality of the people with the shards of their ramshackle society is interesting at times and other times a heart-breaker. This last trip wasn’t different, except for one new aspect... December 1:The first inkling that things continued to change at an amazing pace was the absence of “smoke” in the passenger compartment as we took off from the airport in Cancun.
