What
happens when you mix French bread, a Home Depot executive and a Canadian
architect together on a Caribbean island? In Antigua, this has
turned out to be a winning combination for Douglas McVicars and partner
Dianne White, who've just opened their fifth link in a chain of bread and
pastry shops. The bakery started off with a woman with an idea. That's
how Doug describes the birth of the thriving business he and partner Dianne
now run. Franciane's sells around 300,000 sandwiches per year, in
an island with a population of just over 70,000. The Toronto native began
working as assistant manager at Franciane's in January 2004. Six
months before that, he and Dianne, who had been working part-time at a
Home Depot Doug managed, while she finished up her architecture degree,
had come to the island on vacation. White's parents are Antiguan. Six months
before that, he and Dianne, who had been working part-time at a Home Depot
Doug managed, while she finished up her architecture degree, had come to
the island on vacation. - Baking

Real
Estate Good Buys Overseas for Just $50,000
- In previous issues of Escape From America Magazine we detailed some amazing
properties you can buy overseas for $150,000 or less . The following week
we listed properties available at $100,000 or less and then what you can
buy on an even lower budget of $75,000. This week, part 4 of
our 4 part series, we are going to show you what $50,000 will buy.
We looked for homes that were ready to move in to, or needed very little
in the way of renovation. Instead of providing the links to
the properties featured in this article we are listing them on a separate
newsletter which is free and easy to subscribe to. This is so that
we can keep you up to date with properties in a price bracket that suits
your pocket. Subscription details are given at the end of the article.

Living
On Antigua And Barbuda - Interview With Greg Urlwin
- A life at sea sounds like a dream to many. Others would wish for a mixture
of land and ocean. Ferrying people and cargo between Antigua and Barbuda,
Greg Urlwin has found the perfect blend. In the early 80's, Urlwin decided
he wanted to follow in his uncle's wake, and sail to the Caribbean.
Before that, he says, he had been in a university in New Hampshire, studying
"everything and nothing". "I came down here for a year," he says,
"and stayed, two, went home, and was even less interested in being there
than I had been before. "I realised that all this university was
getting in the way of my education, so I came back here." He made
a 20-year career sailing yachts from Antigua to Europe, Alaska, the US
coast and the Panama Canal. But that too eventually grew dull, and Urlwin
wanted something new. Greg Urlwin runs the Antigua
Barbuda ferry service The Barbuda Express runs 5 days a week between

Moving
In and Camping Out In Antigua - It looked
like a home. But it was only a shell. For what seemed like weeks, the outside
looked in all respects complete, but inside there was nothing. Not even
a floor. The doors remained locked, the windows closed and lifeless. The
construction technique for the property is a product of G90 building systems,
with Antech, a local company installing the system, As with most construction
projects, payment is made in installments - 50% at the start of the project
then a further 30% at closeout stage. Closeout stage is when the house
can be completely closed off, i.e. roof on, windows and doors in place
and lockable. So there is a real need for the contractors to get to this
stage so that they can collect the next bundle of cash. After that, everything
slows down as the pressure is off for them. ---> read more.

Antigua
Images: The Beach is Just Beginning - “The
beach is just the beginning” or so states the new image of the Antigua
and Barbuda tourist board www.antigua-barbuda.org . This three island nation
boasts 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, but there is more to
these Caribbean islands than just that. A previous advertising campaign
stated “Tourism is everybody’s business” and the truth in that is evident
when you realize just how much of the GDP evolves from it. For someone
contemplating moving to Antigua, perhaps investing or having a second home
here, the effect of tourism on the economy is indeed everybody’s business.
An increase in the number of visitors to the island directly relates to
the amount of revenue the island generates, and we all want to be a part
of a flourishing community..

Concrete
and Steel Sandwiches are Simple Fare for a Dream Home in Antigua
- I had a dream… a dream of sipping rum punch, lounging elegantly on my
balcony overlooking the blue waters of the Caribbean… I dreamed of building
a house in Antigua… but what about the reality? The roar of the engine
in my ears made all conversation impossible, and the time of day made it
equally impossible to effectively escape from the heat of the sun, so I
just stood there with a stupid grin on my face watching the Backhoe driver
strutting his stuff. The raw power of the machine in the hands of a skilled
operator is a pleasure to watch – moving the digger with poise and grace,
ripping out cassie trees, shaking off the loose soil, then dropping them
gently in a neat pile to burn later. All achieved without gouging out great
ditches in the land or destroying all the top soil. See: Concrete
and Steel Sandwich Home in Antigua Chapter 2 : To the Roof and Beyond.

Roving
Capitalist Shares His Secrets of Uncovering Gold Mines
- Emerging market run-ups are being fueled by the trillions of dollars
trying to find a temporary home. When that home starts growing mold, the
trillions will pack up and head back to civilization (provided capital
controls don’t stop them at the border). We have a long list of solid companies
with solid management and sound business models that we are watching while
we wait for the right opportunity to buy. If we recommend something along
the way, it’s because a particular company or security satisfies our comfort
level. But right now so few do that we are buying gold and real estate
and husbanding cash for the big opportunity. Remember that the key to real
success is to be bold when others are timid and timid when others are bold.
Today, as we raise our field glasses to survey the investment and speculative
battlefield, our helmets are pulled down low and our knees are trembling.
We’re not just timid but downright cowardly. Our only boast is that we
have the courage to admit it.

Beware
the Swinging Pendulum: Understanding Inflection Points
- As global speculators and investors looking to grow and protect our wealth,
we are constantly on the look out for shifts in the social, geopolitical
and economic landscape. As members of the Without Borders community understand,
we have recently entered a period of change that will prove as significant
as the end of the Cold War. This seismic shift is one of four central
themes we expect to influence every aspect of your and our lives over the
next decade or more. We call this shift the rise of the Politiconomy:
the hostile merger of politics and economics. In the western world, there
was once a clear distinction between politics and economics. During
the cold war if politicians were to even hint at state intervention in
the economy they were branded ¨pinko¨ and their career ended shortly
thereafter.

Guides - eBooks On Moving Overseas
- -
The guides cover relocation to various nations; overseas retirement
reports, country guides, investment guides, and offshore resource guides.
These reports are written by professionals and by others like yourself
who have already relocated or retired overseas and relay their experiences,
their successes, and their failures. The process of moving to another nation
is slightly more complicated than moving from Detroit to Seattle, but no
exceedingly so. What is required is information, which is precisely
what these reports provide. Our website also has thousands of articles,
and they too are extremely useful, but when it comes to international relocation
one wants more than anecdotal facts. These reports will supply you with
the information you need, they'll save you money, time and frustration.
. . . at a reasonable cost, we might add.
