In
a survey of employers by the Association of Graduate Recruiters, 55% felt
that graduates lack soft skills, such as communication and leadership skills.
A stint teaching English abroad can change all that though: TEFL teachers
who successfully bridge language and cultural barriers in the classroom
in order to teach their students can certainly prove that their communication
and interpersonal skills are up to scratch. While standing in front of
large classes of students (often rowdy kids!) every day and keeping control
boosts leadership and presentation skills. Chris Cockcroft, 25, who taught
English in South Korea for a year after graduating from university in Leeds,
said: “The most important skill I gained while teaching English abroad
was the ability to think quickly and not panic. Teaching English is different
every day, so it teaches you to organise and prioritise your workloads
and be ready for anything. “It also gives you a great deal of confidence
in dealing with all manner of people no matter what language they speak,
and the international experience never fails to impress potential employers.”

Articles
About Teaching Jobs Overseas -
What They Don't Teach You In College - About the articles on these pages
- There may be courses in college that teach you to live overseas but it's
doubtful; and if there is, it isn't the same as living there... the majority
of these articles are written by a person much like yourself who is living
& working overseas. - They Can Walk The Walk - Yes, they can
walk the walk; they've learned how to find the job they wanted, how to
land on their feet in some remote corner of the world and to spend their
time doing interesting work—and most importantly, to maintain, to hang
in, to thrive. So it's pretty clear if we have half a brain we want to
hear them talk the talk. - Note: Some of these articles are great, some
of them are mediocre, and some are absolute gems that will give you ideas
to last a lifetime!

Buddha's
Birthday In Seoul: White Elephants And Lotus Flowers ~ by Brandon Walcutt
- To better understand what I saw, I had to learn a little of Korea's Buddhist
history. Buddhism was brought to Korea roughly 1,600 years ago and still
enjoys great popularity with roughly half the population. In early times,
Buddhism became the state religion but during the Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910),
it was replaced with Confucianism and severely discouraged to the point
where public worship was no longer allowed. Because of the restrictions,
monks moved their temples to Korea's mountains and remote areas. Today,
hundreds of active temples still dot cities and countryside. Jogyesa Temple
is one of Korea's principle temples and is located in downtown Seoul near
Insadong. Jogyesa Temple plays host to Korea's largest Buddhist sect and
is the focal point to the local Seoul festivities surrounding this event.
As Buddha's birthday is the most important day to Korean Buddhists, they
party in grand style. Both in and outside of every temple, monks hang colorful
lanterns. Many local governments around the peninsula also festoon city
streets with lanterns as well as calling a national holiday. Although every
temple holds some form of ceremonies, the largest and most festive is held
in the capital city of Seoul.

Relishing
Narcissus in South Korea By Barry Walsh -
Or will we find we are penniless, and so stay in a five star hotel making
use of room service, mini bar, Korean massage and public bath facilities
courtesy of my mother’s visa card (to be used in emergencies only)? Or
dance on the nightclub stage with cucumber in our ears, run across police
cars or pretend to be famous sports stars? The possibilities are tame and
hardly daring, but they sustain my excitement. It is enough. Back on the
bus I pass pagodas, dried up rivers, template towns, smashed up cars, and
pervading all, mountains, neither lush nor barren, and fields waterlogged
in spring. This country, the Hermit Kingdom is a forgotten nirvana. Up
here, below the trees, are temples and hermitages and monks; I could run
outside and climb and disappear forever, taken in by the trees and the
monks, fed and nurtured, my body lost to civilisation, my spirit found
by renunciation. The service stop approaches. I think of coffee and a cigarette.
With amazing fluidity, the bus turns off the motorway, enters the service
area and parks. I start for the toilet still preoccupied with my serenity.
To me this is what experiencing a foreign culture is all about. I have
done nothing uniquely Korean on my journey, but my self-assurance is sufficient.

The
Other Korea ~ The Underbelly Of South Korea ~ By Eileen Meehan
- I think I may have been wearing too many clothes to truly feel what those
girls felt, but I have to say that it was a little difficult to get me
to leave the stage! I felt sexy, fun, free, feminine and in control
– but there was no way I could truly empathise with the girls – for me,
there was no money involved. I felt a sense of freedom from self-expression,
but for the girls that work there, they are completely at the mercy of
the bar owner and there’s no freedom. Since I came to Ulsan, Korea to teach
six months ago, my beliefs have become considerable stronger. I’m quite
an “independent woman” and my belief in equality is very strong. My sense
so far from South Korea, is that this belief is not shared by the majority.
What I have witnessed here, is a society where, what everything looks like
on the surface is the main concern.

Squid
Island - Ullungdo, South Korea - Squid Island By Richard S. Ehrlich
- Richard S. Ehrlich is from San Francisco, California, and first journeyed
to Asia in 1972. Ehrlich writes, "At night, Islanders tie undried squids
to indoor racks. Down by the seashore, fishermen's trash buckets are filled
with discarded squids' eyes, but the rest of the slippery animals are carefully
gutted. They have turned isolated, middle-of-nowhere Ullungdo into a boomtown
with tentacles. The island offers moody, inspiring, rocky hills and a seemingly
hostile coastline." People on this island dangle squids from clotheslines,
right next to their laundry's shirts, pants and underwear, as if the small
sea creatures are a hip new fashion accessory.
They drape squids across the rooftops of their homes, along cement sidewalks
and on wooden doorsteps. They lay squids everywhere -- especially in the
sunshine, to dry them as quick as possible.

South
Korea as a Potential Expat Haven - Moving to Korea By Mike Sluchinski
- Compared to other destinations around the world, South Korea has been
overlooked as a destination for those looking for alternatives to life
in North America. Most expatriates know about Japan, Thailand, and the
Philippines—but few have made an effort to settle in South Korea. The reason
may be because South Korea requires more effort than other places. Culturally,
it is one of the last strongholds of Confucianism. The language also scares
people who are thinking of moving abroad. Additionally, the climate includes
snow—which is a turnoff to some. As an example of how tough it is to settle
in South Korea, consider that even the metropolis of Seoul only has a minute
Chinatown. Koreans love their country and have traditionally frowned upon
‘foreigners’ influencing their nation. Those who choose to expatriate to
South Korea can take advantage of opportunities in the following areas:
business and consulting, education and training, and, of course, the Internet.
And, retired professionals and retired military personnel are living quite
happily here.

Korea.net
: The official website of the Republic of Korea - As the only true
gateway of information about Korea, Korea.net, the official web portal
of the Korean government, has reinforced its capabilities based on Web
2.0, a new way of thinking about the World Wide Web that enhances information
service, global networking and user participation. Korea.net provides service
in five languages -- English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese --
to narrow the information service gap among regions that use different
languages, and to more respond to key issues and strengthen the global
network in a more timely way. Based on user surveys and the latest online
trends, Korea.net's new websites in five languages now reflect a universally
applicable web identity and have improved online accessibility by redesigning
each of the websites based on a customized web style guide, user interface
and the needs and preferences of users of different regions.

Castle
Hopping In Korea - The Beauty Of Korea ~ by Brandon Walcutt
- Standing atop the fortified castle wall, I look down at the mist shrouded
shapes of pine trees crowding the mountain slopes. I can easily imagine
troops of armored soldiers marching their way up the steep trails towards
the high stone walls. This is not an image of Europe that we are describing,
but one of South Korea. Korea is more than just the home of kimchi, the
DMZ and red-shirted soccer enthusiasts. Korea has a rich, five thousand
year history that is still easily accessible to travelers. One of the favorite
things many visitors enjoy experiencing are the castles that dot the Korean
countryside. Although most castles lie in ruins these days, there
are many fine examples, several of which can be found within a short distance
of Seoul, the capital city and primary entry point to the Korean peninsula.

Investing
in Korea - Investing in Korean companies may
take several forms. Most forms of investment in Korean companies
are quite hazardous. There are only two means whereby an investment
is not completely frivolous. Some background in the general attitude
and schemes Korean businessmen employ must be covered to understand where
they are coming from in their thinking. A historical background will
expose the roots of their thinking. And, some examples will show
how that thinking manifests itself in actual deals. The general population
is most gracious, considerate, and caring. But, they do not represent
the business community. The business community is feudalistic and
deeply Confucian; a Plutocracy. This is a very old business paradigm.
One must consider that the Japanese invaded and occupied Korea for about
50 years.

on OHB can be installed by beginners if they’re willing to put in some
time to follow their simple directions, learn a few new computer skills,
enhance their technology vocabulary, explore new ways of doing things,
and then patiently, roll them out.

Seoul
Diary - Living & Working in Seoul, Korea - Living & Working in
Korea by David Ritchie - Want to see
how agreeable city life can be? Come with me to Seoul, where I live and
work. Get off the subway at Kyongbokkung, site of ancient Kyongbok Palace.
Look around the grounds for a few minutes if you like, and then stroll
out through Kwanghwamun Gate and down Sejong-ro, Seoul's equivalent of
Park Avenue. Sejong-ro is named for King Sejong, old Korea's greatest monarch.
He was like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln all
in one, with a dash of Ben Franklin and Noah Webster thrown in. King Sejong
invented Hangul, the Korean alphabet. His face adorns the 10,000-won bill.
If his portrait is accurate, then he looked every inch a Korean king. -
Korean kids have their whimsical side too. Inscriptions on t-shirts seem
simply to have fun with English. For example: “UFO – Meeting Next Particular
Any Style or Color.” That’s nice to know, if I ever go shopping for a UFO.
The message on the back of one jacket read, “Just Take Care Of.” Of what?
Anything you like. What could be more user-friendly?
