Give
Me 15 Minutes a Day, and I’ll Help You Safely Lose up to 2 Pounds a Week!
- How do carbohydrates make us fat? When your blood sugar rises, your
body releases insulin into your bloodstream. The excess insulin tells your
body to store more of the calories you consume as body fat. The “glycemic
index”, (GI) measures how the carbohydrates in foods increase your blood
sugar. Foods with a high GI trigger the release of excess insulin, making
you fat. The higher the glycemic index of a food, the more it causes your
blood sugar to rise. Foods with a GI of zero do not raise your blood sugar
or trigger insulin production. Foods with a GI of 100 elevate your blood
sugar as much as pure glucose. What to do: To achieve high-speed fat loss,
make sure most of the foods you eat have a glycemic index below 40. A table
listing the glycemic of 215 grains, cereals, breads, pastas, beverages,
fruits, potatoes, beans, nuts, and other popular foods begins on page 63
of Dr. Sears’ High-Speed Fat Loss in 7 Easy Steps. The Journal of
Obesity published a study of 65 patients in which half ate a high-protein
diet while the other half ate a low-protein diet. After 6 months, the group
eating high protein lost more weight than the low protein group.

Nature
Is Better
- When I was in medical school, they never told me about the hormone leptin.
They didn’t even know it existed. Then the medical community widely accepted
the view that leptin was a new potential avenue to control obesity because
it would stop your hunger. Some even went as far as suggesting that we
should give everyone who was overweight a leptin injection. Now we find
out it’s not what we thought it was. Leptin should control hunger. But
when you gain too much weight you become leptin resistant. Your brain will
then ignore leptin’s signals. Giving people more leptin will only make
it worse. It just goes to show how little we know, and how things keep
changing. But we’ve always presumed that what we know now is the end of
the game. We are taught information as if it’s whole and factual, as if
we know what we’re talking about. Then in the future, we look back and
say, “Boy, we sure didn’t know what we were talking about. It’s a good
thing we know now.” Years from now, we’ll look back and do the same thing
again. It never ends. It’s what I’ve seen my entire life. What does it
tell you? That we can’t trust science? That we’re not making any progress?
That no one knows anything? No… what it does is give us humility. We should
be humble about our state of knowledge. And it’s what has given me this
small pearl of wisdom: Nature is better until proven otherwise.

Leptin
- Your Ultimate Fat-Loss Hormone
- Researchers discovered a hormone that can help us unlock the mystery
of weight gain – and weight reduction. The discovery is important. It’s
a hormone called leptin. Leptin is a hormone made from fat cells,
and tells your brain how much energy you have and how to use it. When you
have enough, leptin tells your brain to stop eating and start melting fat.
When your energy is low, leptin tells your brain to increase your appetite,
so you’ll start eating. More new research shows that you can become “leptin
resistant” in the same way you can become insulin resistant.1 When your
cells can no longer hear or understand the messages coming from hormones,
we say they are resistant. This happens when too much of the hormone is
in the bloodstream for an extended period. In fact, leptin resistance can
lead to insulin resistance. This in turn, puts you at risk for obesity,
heart disease, diabetes and cancer. When you eat foods that spike your
blood sugar, both insulin and leptin get thrown out of balance. High blood
sugar will trigger a surge of insulin. When that sugar is metabolized in
your fat cells, those fat cells release a surge of leptin.

Statin
Neuropathy - Are They Joking?
- Statins don’t just cause muscle problems. They damage nerves. Nerves
control the muscles in your body by electrical signals that make them react
in specific ways. Nerve and muscle disorders cause your muscles to react
in abnormal ways. Nerve conduction studies test how well and how fast the
nerves can send electrical signals. They use a statistic called “conduction
velocity” measured in meters per second. Results for the man in the article
show his reactions are way below normal. For example normal conduction
velocity for peroneal nerves is greater than 44 meters per second. The
man’s velocity was only 40 at the head of his fibula, and only 38 at the
knee. And conventional medicine has no clue this is happening. The article
reports: “Neither the patient’s cardiologist, nor his general physician,
was aware of any connection between statins and neuropathy.” I believe
statins are damaging most people’s nerves who take them. But it’s subclinical.
Meaning no one reports it because doctors never ask. On their website,
the drug giant Merck lists 23 separate causes for neuropathy… none of which
include taking their statin drug, Zocor®.

How
I Keep The Critters Out By Using Organic Pesticides
- In my garden, I use neem oil to keep out pests. This extract from the
fruit of the neem tree has been used for pest control in parts of Asia
and India for over 2,500 years. It’s completely non-toxic. When the Environmental
Protection Agency went to test neem for toxicity, it found zero reactions,
even at the highest exposure. In fact, you can use any part of the tree
for pest control – the twigs, the leaves or the berries. The tree will
grow in Florida. In other places and colder climates, I’ve seen it grown
indoors in pots. Even sitting in a pot, it’ll serve to keep the bugs out.
You can take a couple leaves and put them in your cabinets to keep cockroaches
out. Or you can fray up the ends of the stems (so that the twigs are like
brushes) and leave those around to work, too. I also get rid of the
critters that try to crawl into my house with a pesticide that uses diatomaceous
earth. It causes the pests to wither up and die. For a bug spray that’s
good for spot use if I do see bugs in the house, I like to use a mint and
herbal oil spray. It kills bugs within a few minutes and even smells pleasant,
unlike those chemical sprays

Herbs
of Grace - In
a study from India, researchers gave animals aluminum chloride. The animals
treated with bacopa extract were protected from damage to the lipids and
proteins in the brain. Bacopa’s protection even showed up on a microscopic
level. It prevented a buildup of toxins between neurons, and stopped damage
to the hippocampus, an important seat of learning, memory and thinking
power. Another animal study showed bacopa reduced cellular damage in the
part of the brain that controls movement and attention, and reversed the
symptoms of muscular problems originating in the brain. Bacopa has a lot
of beneficial components like saponins (that protect against infection)
and flavonoids (plant antioxidants). But bacopa also has two active components
called bacosides A and B. They improve the transmission of impulses between
nerve cells in the brain, they regenerate synapses and repair damaged neurons.
It helps you to learn and remember new things much more easily.

Open The Bubbly - Champagne is packed with Polyphenols
- It’s well documented that one drink a day for women and up to two
a day for men can help you live a longer and healthier life. And with all
the extra heart and brain benefits you get from The Bubbly, it’s a good
idea to drink some even if it isn’t a special celebration. So how do you
choose a champagne that packs plenty of polyphenol punch? The first thing
you want to remember is that even though the word “champagne” usually refers
to all sparkling wines, actual champagne only comes from France. But that
doesn’t mean there aren’t other wines like champagne. You can also try
a sparkling white wine from California, which is made the same way champagne
is made in France. Or you can try champagne’s sexy cousins, Spumante from
Italy and Cava from Spain. Champagne – The best champagne is not made every
year, but only when the wine is good enough. Those champagnes have a “vintage,”
or year they are made, and are very expensive, like the famous Dom Perignon
or Cristal. These expensive champagnes are also very “dry,” which means
they have a slight bitterness… but that bitterness is good. It comes from
very high polyphenol content. Don’t worry, though. Sweeter champagnes –
ones that are less dry-tasting – are still plenty healthy.

Protein
Is Your Body’s Most Prized Power Source - Careful: Fake Protein Can Make
You Weak
- Protein is the only truly essential macronutrient. You also need
two essential fatty acids, but once you get a minimum of them, you can
make all the fat your body needs. Carbohydrates, the third macronutrient,
are completely unessential to your health. In other words, your body can
make whatever carbs it needs on its own. But you simply cannot survive
without eating protein. Proteins are the building blocks of life. Quality
protein is your single most important nutritional concern. It’s composed
of 20 amino acids, eight of which you can’t make and must consume. To be
optimally healthy, you must consume all eight of these essential amino
acids every day. Protein is an important component of every cell in your
body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Your body uses protein
to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones
and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones,
muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. But unlike fat and carbohydrates, the
body does not store protein, and therefore has no reserve to draw on when
it needs a new supply.

Discovery Lowers The Age of Your Skin by Up to 30%
- Keep Your Skin Hydrated for a Young, Fresh Look - Your body makes
a nutrient that keeps your skin moist. It’s called Hyaluronic Acid (HA).
In your face, HA gives you the smooth, taut fullness we associate with
youth. When you’re young, you naturally have a lot of HA. But as you age,
your body doesn’t make as much and your skin suffers. You may have heard
of HA before. You’ll find it in popular fillers that dermatologists inject
into the skin to puff up your lips, neutralize your frown lines and smooth
out your skin. HA has the amazing ability to hold vast amounts of water,
absorbing around 1,000 times its weight in water. Without enough moisture,
your skin becomes saggy, dry and wrinkled, adding years to your appearance.
But when your skin has enough HA, all that water plumps up your skin. HA
enhances volume and elasticity to restore a youthful balance to your face,
so you can start looking the way you did years ago. You can get the benefits
of HA topically and get the results you’re looking for. You see, your skin
can absorb HA at a cellular level. And the HA in Revive sinks into the
deeper levels of your skin where it’s needed most. It also acts as a “carrier,”
delivering all of the anti-aging ingredients in Revive deeply into your
cells. But there’s more to Revive. It also helps you reduce the appearance
of dark age spots that make you look so much older. Use this Same “DNA
Technology” to Help With the Appearance of Age Spots And Blotchy Skin

Extended
Life Spans The Japanese Secret
- Well, researchers first discovered evidence of a “longevity gene”
about 20 years ago. It’s a gene that may increase your life span. There’s
a few ways you can turn on this “longevity gene.” One way is by calorie
restriction. Researchers found that giving mice a diet with very few calories
significantly extended their life spans. Later studies found the same was
true with a wide range of living creatures from single-celled organisms
to plants and animals. The results showed that taking in fewer calories
does turn on the longevity gene, and the organisms live longer. It wasn’t
until recently an explanation was found. Researchers isolated a family
of life-protecting genes called sirtuins (silent information protein regulators).
Under conditions of severe stress, such as starvation, the sirtuins are
turned on. And they transmit signals to every cell in your body to cancel
out the effects of aging. This would be a great solution to aging … if
starving were an option. That’s where EGCG comes in. EGCG helps switch
on your longevity genes similar to restricting your eating. Mentioned in
the medical journal Rejuvenation Research, “The protective effects of high-dose
EGCG against oxidative stress were comparable with the effects of caloric
restriction, a well-established dietary intervention that retards aging.”

How
To Keep Your Muscles Young
- It’s true. If you’re not getting enough of the right type of exercise,
your muscle size and strength is diminishing as you age. And chances are
you don’t even realize it’s happening. Sarcopenia - It’s a condition known
as sarcopenia. In the beginning, you remain the same size you’ve always
been. That’s because the muscle you’ve lost is being replaced with fat
cells. So you don’t look thinner … or heavier. However, by the time you
reach your 40s or 50s, it starts catching up with you. You may notice some
extra belly fat. Perhaps your thighs or rear end seem to start growing
larger. And somewhere along the way, you might realize it’s not so easy
to heft those heavy objects any more. As time goes on, that build-up of
excess fat begins to accelerate muscle breakdown even further. And it could
result in “sarcopenic obesity.” That’s what happens when your fat mass
keeps growing while lean muscle mass declines. But that’s not the worst
of it. A recent study shows that people with sarcopenia have significantly
lower cardiovascular fitness. Plus, they are more likely to have physical
limitations than those with normal muscle mass. Just as importantly, sarcopenia
causes weakness. This leads to falls that so many elders experience. In
fact, sarcopenia has as much to do with fractures as brittle bones do.

Signs that the US Government is Making it Harder For You to Become an Expat
- One of the most common reasons for wanting to expatriate from the
United States is the concern about government overreach. Many feel that
the expansion of government in recent years has been chipping away at the
freedom and liberty that the country was founded upon. What with more and
more agencies, regulations, surveillance, and mandates, the right to privacy
and self - determination is steadily shrinking right along with financial
outlooks. So, are you among the increasing number of people who feel that
the only real solution is to get out of the country? Well, using the exact
same tactics that are driving you away, the government appears intent on
preventing you from leaving. Changes that have recently been put in place
as well as proposals for future changes in rules and regulations might
be intended to discourage. But they might also drive your resolve to take
your destiny into your own hands and do whatever it takes to make your
move overseas.

Travel
can become a place lived; and a place lived can be a form of travel -
This Chronicle by Michele Kohan should therefore be a Godsent to those
moms who find themselves with children but with no prospect of living any
sort of life that presents the challenge of personal and geographic exploration...
The question becomes, 'are my children safer and better off in the suburbs
where one meaningless day blurs into the next, or in a tropical rain forest
where each day presents a new challenge and a new learning experience?'
It isn't an easy task for a mom to decide on the tropical rain forest;
such decisions fly in the face of conventional wisdom... But conventional
wisdom has worn thin, today's so-called civilized suburbs with their shopping
malls and weapon-filled schools are no safer than a tropical rain forest.
Add to that the stifling intellectual atmosphere of the USA that wilts
and crushes the qualities of independent judgment that every child should
develop....
