your time/money and you will have an opportunity to explore each major
centre and the surrounding cities and towns in a more meaningful and unhurried

My
Swiss Bank Affair ~ Opening
An Account ~ By Bonnie Burns - No matter where you live banking practices
can seem quite mysterious or idiosyncratic when compared to the country
you come from. Banking is very different from place to place and that is
what is exceptionally translated in the above article. A wonderful and
comical piece about being told what you need to live on by your friendly
Swiss banker. If you want to know what a person really thinks then watch
what they do with their money, and if you really want to insult a person
tell them how much of their money they need and why they can't withdrawl
more. Remember, Switzerland is not America. Aug/03

Car and Barge: Will Travel - Michelle and Paul Caffrey summer in France
aboard their 1906 Dutch steel barge. They enjoy 1000 square feet of comfortable
living space while crusing the famous canals and rivers of Europe.
It's the global nomad scene. How they did it is brought to our readers
in the Winter issue of Offshore Real Estate Quarterly. Soon, though, the
Caffreys realized they needed some land transportation for those shopping
needs. They went out and bought a Mini that would fit nicely on the deck

No perfect
vessel: What
kind of boat makes a good home? - by Kiana Delamare, As explained in
last month’s issue, she and her husband John used to spend hours on their
porch at their home on Luck Hill, Tortola, watching boats sail by, tucking
into secluded bays that could be reached no other way. They fantasized
about buying a boat and sailing from island to island, traveling with no
real schedule or deadlines, able to stay as long as they liked and leave
whenever the urge struck them. Finally, they decided to do it.

Wandering
the Canals & Rivers of Europe - The
Crossing - I flew into Paris from Seattle by way of Toronto on an Air
Canada flight. Not only did Air Canada have the cheapest fare but they
allowed me to bring my bicycle as part of my baggage allowance at no additional
cost. It was quite a struggle lugging my bags and the bicycle from
the airport into downtown Paris to catch the metro and then the train for
my trip to Dijon. From Dijon I had to catch a commuter train for a 40 min
ride to the village of St. Jean de Losne, located at the confluence of
the River Saone and the Bourgogne canal, where I had left the boat in a
marina for the winter.
Wandering
the European Canals & Rivers - Wandering
the European Canals & Rivers - We eventually approached Paris from
the west and made our way up the River Seine past the Eiffel Tower, Notre
Dame Cathedral, under countless bridges, amidst heavy barge traffic to
the marina at the Bastille. The trip from Amsterdam to Paris had taken
us just under 7 weeks of leisure travel. The Bastille marina has a convenient
location in the heart of Paris and costs about $US28/day. After a two week
stay in Paris, my daughter & girlfriend left for the States. I continued
on south for more than another month finally arriving the end of Sept.
at a marina in the village of St. Jean de Losne, just south of Dijon.

Islands
~ From
The Caribbean To The Mediterranean ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Whenever
or wherever I travel, I generally fall in love with some aspect of the
place I am visiting. But one type of destination stands out as a
consistent favorite – islands. Every island I have visited seems to have
a special culture, a certain relaxed atmosphere and its own set of rules
for living. You just know when you’ve stepped onto an island. Dec./04
Margarita
Island ~ Cheapest
Vacation Spot In The Caribbean ~ by Scott Boswell - There are actually
three islands - Margarita, Coche, and Cubagua, with Margarita being the
largest and most populous of the three. Isla Coche is sparsely populated
and very popular with sun worshippers because of it’s beaches and beautiful
water. There are a few hotels, B&B’s, and restaurants. Cubagua is almost
totally uninhabited and is perfect for exploring, snorkeling and diving.

Mustique:
The Caribbean's Best Kept Secret ~ A
Private Hideaway In The Caribbean ~ by Heather Prince - Gazing out
the twin propeller plane window the jagged emerald island seemed to float
in the tri-colored turquoise Caribbean waters. This is the first site of
the illustrious private island of Mustique: The upper crust’s best kept
secret. Tommy Hilfiger, Mick Jagger , Princess Margaret and Viscount David
Linley, just to name a few, all have enjoyed the splendor of the small
1,400 acre island located in the Caribbean Grenadines. Luckily for me,
this was the location of my best friend’s wedding, so I became one of the
few who have been able to sneek-a-peek into the secret life of the rich
and famous. Jan/05
Real Estate
Investment In The Caribbean ~ Dominica,
The "Nature" Island ~ by Deb Andrews - Half way along the curved necklace
of islands comprising the Windward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean basks
a mountainous rock of 290 sq miles (750 sq km). At longitude 61º
20W, and latitude 15º 25N, Dominica is a land of steep mountains and
cliffs plummeting straight into the blue Caribbean sea on the western side
and the grey Atlantic on the eastern. Rising at the highest point
to Mt. Diablotin at 4,747 ft. (1,447m), this is a country of raw beauty,
rugged headlands and moody mountains, their peaks often buried in cloud.

Caribbean ~ by Allan Weisbecker - Like virtually all Down Islanders,
my gypsy cab driver Kesler was out of his mind behind the wheel, but, God
bless him, he did me sane, right and dandy insofar as leading me to accommodations
goes, notwithstanding the rear end collision we sustained just outside
the little hamlet called Betsy’s Hope on the island of Tobago’s rural windward

The
Caribbean On Canvas - Artists
Of The Caribbean ~ by Maxine Schur - I’m in love with Caribbean art.
I was hooked when I saw my first exhibit of Haitian painting. What
I saw was primitive but so enchanting. Naively, I thought all Caribbean
art was naïve. Years later when I vacationed in the Dominican
Republic I got a surprise. Though sharing the island of Hispaniola with
Haiti, the Dominican Republic produces a markedly different art: sophisticated
and European. Dec./03 |

The Caribbean’s Best Kept Secret
For Expatriates ~ Dominica
~
by Phillip Townsend - The Caribbean is synonymous
with hedonism - from the mass tourist Mecca of the Bahamas to the off-the-beaten-path
divers' paradise of Bonaire. What you might not know about the Caribbean,
however, is that it's also home to one of the most appealing - and inexpensive
- expatriate and retirement havens in the world. This little-known gem,
though off the well-trodden path taken by most travelers, has a lot to
offer. So if you're longing for the good life in a tropical haven, duck
the crowds and head to Dominica. Oct./05

Calling
On Callback - How To Telephone From Anywhere to Everywhere At One-Third
The Cost -
Calling
On Callback - As it doesn't cost anything to set up Callback and it
is very easy to set up, you can set it up at no cost, use it for one call,
pay for the one call at a 60% savings over a standard call, and if you
don't like it, never have to use it again. Plus you can try it from anywhere
in the world and call anyone anywhere in the world with the purest connection
at the lowest possible price. It saves me about $2.00 a minute on most
of my calls and ends up costing me about 47 cents a minute for a call that
would ordinarily cost me $2.50 per minute. In one hour I save $120
and have a bill for just $28.20 for each hour of talk, rather than $150.00
- A savings of $2,880 per day! No one who lives overseas
should be without callback. Local overseas telephone monopolies have had
an incentive to suppress the knowledge of Callback service but despite
the smokescreen it's legal everywhere in the world but in the Philippines
and Saudi Arabia.

Now Can Call Home For Less ~ Long-Distance
Rates ~ by Dennis Grant - For many people living abroad, the cost of
long-distance service means carefully monitoring how often they call friends
and family. An evolving technology called Broadband Internet Telephony
is changing all that. Calls carried over the Internet, and not a
traditional phone line, avoid many regulatory fees, allowing heavily discounted
prices. Sept./04

Buddha's
Birthday In Seoul ~ White
Elephants And Lotus Flowers ~ by Brandon Walcutt - I stood quietly
in the riot of color and noise, bathed in the warm light of thousands of
colorful lanterns bearing images of Buddha, dragons, white elephants and
lotus flowers. Before me marched robe-clad groups of monks and nuns and
throngs of people dressed in brightly colored hanboke, Korea's traditional
dress. Other people on the street wore plain street cloths presenting a
modern contrast to the otherwise, almost medieval atmosphere. Blanketing
the street came the sounds of droning Buddhist chants and Korean folk music.

Celebrating
American Holidays In Buenos Aires ~ American
In Argentina ~ by Delores Johnson - It is my second holiday season
in Buenos Aires. I moved here 16 months ago. Being from the Northern part
of the Northern Hemisphere (Connecticut, USA), I still have not gotten
used to it being warm at Christmas time. I walk into a grocery store or
department store, and among all of the Christmas decorations, gift items,
and special foods for Christmas, like turrón, a type of candy, and
sweet bread, I see swimming pool and picnic supplies and lawn furniture.
It is a shock to my system. Dec./05

A Christmas Tradition Alive In The Dominican Republic ~ by Ginnie Bedggood
- The whole town of San Pedro de Macoris is jumping, awash with excitement.
This past weekend it was pretty much awash with rum as well. And many of

well. So......is San Pedro de Macoris the latest fun spot in the Dominican

Parisian
Holiday Bliss ~ Advice
From Parler Paris ~ by Adrian Leeds - I am almost always home in Paris
for Christmas and New Year's Eve, too - mostly because so many friends
love to descend on Paris at this time of year. Obviously, it's a time when

Some Thoughts
On Financial Stuff - Art,
Silver And The IMF ~ by Jurgen Klemann - The week leading to Easter,
Holy Week (in Spanish semana santa) boils down to a week of vacation/holiday
in Mexico. All schools, colleges, universities are closed. I can’t claim
to be awfully unhappy about it. Similar to Christmas, which I spent with
friends of mine in Colima, I had no intention whatsoever of leaving Colima
for semana santa. First, because I no longer yearn to keep moving around
like a wandering circus. It rather looks as if yours truly has entered
a calmer and quieter stage in life. May/05

Traditions Alive In Modern Eastern
Tibet - Celebrating
The Tibetan New Year ~ by Satina Anziano - Preparations are in
full swing for lhosar, the Tibetan New Year. The teens will gather at 9
a.m. today to practice the dances and songs for the festival. When
I rouse myself to look at my watch, I see it is already quarter past eight.
My host, Urgyen, is at puja1 with the monks, so I will be alone for breakfast.
I ease myself out of the warm bed into the frigid air. My mountaineer watch
records a room temp of 43°F. I use the chamber pot one last time. I
fish under the blankets for my socks, then jump into the rest of
my clothes layered over the ever-present long johns. Once again under the
blankets for the hot water bottle. May/05
How To Disappear
In Six Easy Lessons -Hiding
Out In The Walled City Of Cartagena - For professional reasons I read
all the books on 'disappearing,' how to become a fugitive, vanish, jump
ship, go away, and not be found. Most of them are rubbish. One failing
they all have in common is telling the 'disappeared' what location to go
once they jump ship. Most of them mention Costa Rica. Disappearing
in Costa Rica is like disappearing in Beverly Hills, and almost as expensive.
No one disappears in Costa Rica, except perhaps the Costa Ricans that you
invest money with. If I were seeking a city where I could live without
being found it would be Havana, Cuba. Cartagena would be a second
cousin, a slightly poorer choice, but it would certainly be on my list.

Learning How To Disappear - Learning
How To Disappear - A little tidbit on skip-tracers, we do it because
there is an adrenaline rush in what we do. What’s even better is I get
to bill my client and make some money. As we say in my office, ‘its
all about the Benjamin’s’. If your name comes across my desk and the money
is right you are in the hunt. I will spend my day finding your mistakes,
be it through the utility company, the cable TV Company, or that collect
call from Cabo San Lucas to your sister Edith. April/03 |

The Exit
Strategy And Disappearing ~ Preparing
To Vanish ~ by Frank M. Ahearn - Exit strategy is very important; recently
a producer from MSNBC contacted me about the disappearance of Patrick McDermott
wanting to know if it was possible if he just disappeared. Anything is
possible; however, just walking away is unlikely. If you are looking to
move on, disappear or simply start over you need a good exit strategy.
For several years, I have been giving advice on how to disappear. I receive
emails from many people with questions ranging from property information
to medical questions. When you break it down disappearing is simply starting
over again, no different then loading that U-haul and having a checklist
at hand. Oct./05
Three Steps To Disappearing -
Advice
From A Skip Tracer ~ by Frank M. Ahearn - Being a leading skip tracer
who is hired to find people, I have also helped individuals disappear.
I have dealt with corporate whistle blowers, wives stalked by ex-husband’s
and others just looking for a new start. I receive
emails from individuals who seek new identities. Questions range from,
how to get a new passport, a birth certificate and a driver’s license.
I express repeatedly new identities do not work. If you have ever been
finger printed or perhaps left some hint of DNA behind you cannot escape
it.. May/05

A Letter to
the Editor on Mexican Health Care - Live
with It - Escape from America Magazine has received many responses
from readers of an article that appreared in the November issue about living
in Mexico for under US$400 per month. Readers want to know about health
care. We're reprinting a Letter to the Editor by Jerry Draughon so that
some of the questions of overseas health care can answered. Jerry says,
"In the US, I was paying $6,500 per year for my group health plan, and
that didn’t include my medicinal prescriptions, dental care, or eyeglasses.
Once I got settled in Mexico in my new home, I joined the health plan offered
by the Mexican government. It's called IMSS (Instituto Medicina de
Segura Social), and it costs everyone a total of $399, no matter who you
are or what your income is. Most of the doctors here are US trained, and
I’m impressed with the cleanliness of the facilities." Escape from America
Magazine invites readers to send in their experiences so that they may
be shared with others.
Case Study:
Emergency Medical Aid in a Remote Coastal Area of Panama - Case
Closed - John Anderton was sailing his way south from his home in San
Francisco Bay. Off the western coast of Panama, he was stricken with an
illness that needed immediate emergency medical care. He found it. Anderton
writes, "I had to put all my trust in the local population, and they couldn't
have treated me better. The hospital experience was a bigger ordeal than
it would have been had I been fluent in Spanish, but the doctors had all
been trained in the U.S., and the staff of the 300-bed regional facility
were excellent. The total cost for my six days in the hospital - including
IVs, 12 x-rays, an exploratory look around my insides with a camera, surgery
under anesthesia, and all medications - came to just US$390! Furthermore,
an emergency room nurse gave me a ride to the local Price Costco, so I
could use the ATM machine to get some money to pay the bill." - by John

Choosing
International Health Insurance - Choosing
International Health Insurance - When you move abroad, one of the most
important parts of your financial security is your international health
insurance plan. While expats may become part of the local government health
plan if they satisfy certain residency and immigration requirements, such
government plans, especially in second and third world countries, often
cover only basic medical needs. In addition, you cannot take this
local coverage with you to another country or back home. Jun/06

Margarita
Island Free Medical Care ~More
From Margarita Island, Venezuela ~ by Scott Boswell - We’re both fortunately
pretty healthy, but a few months back we were roaming around the island
playing ‘tourist’ and KC, my significant other, stepped wrong and hurt
her foot. I took her to a hospital that was close by. It was clean, efficient
and a very nice doctor saw her immediately, examined her foot, ordered
two x-rays and diagnosed a sprain. He also wrote a prescription for arch
supports to help give her more stability in future and told us where to
order them. Oct./05
Understanding
Expatriate / Travel Insurance - A
travel / expatriate insurance primer - Traveling and living in a foreign
country can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also prove challenging
and expensive, especially when sickness or injury occurs and medical services
or worse, medical evacuation is needed. Medical costs have risen dramatically
worldwide and the quality and costs of both routine and emergency medical
care can also vary tremendously from one country to the next. Consequently,
many world travelers purchase supplementary international medical insurance
or travel insurance in order to avoid the potentially staggering financial
costs that could result from serious sickness or injury in a foreign country.

Biking In Brazil
~ Up
Into The Mountains ~ by Shane Jackson - Morning rolled around and soon
my brother-in-law showed up for our Saturday ride. Anderson, having no
fat, weighing 18 lbs less and being 16 years younger meant I had a good
guide and trainer for the days ride. I knew roughly how to make it
back to the peak seen from our veranda. He could ask questions if need
be. I carried only a cell phone and a leatherman. He carried
a small day pack with tools, water, and my digital camera. Our goal was
around 15 miles away and at least 2000’ higher. It was a hot, dry
dusty day. I rode facing traffic on a small dirt trail that followed
the main highway. My first ride on the highway to Ibirité
made it pretty clear one would not live long on the asphalt without a motor.
Stopped at a couple horticultural shops on the outskirts of Ibirité
to marvel at the variety of plants offered and to plan the landscape project
for our place in the bairro. Dec./04

are some great photos in this article. They show you what it might feel
like to bike down a dangerous road in the mountains of Bolivia. There is
also a lot of information about where to stay and how to join the kind
of bike tour described in the article. Bolivia is a country that has great
extremes: the browns of the altiplano and the green jungle on the Brazilian
and Paraguayan borders. The people have always been friendly to me and
that's important in a country where, depending on which city you're in,
your body may be acclimating itself to the pressures of altitude sickness.

disasters by having an offshore survival retreat. An offshore survival
retreat can be many things, it can be a summer home, a place where your
family lives and survives a social break-down that may be happening in
the USA, it can be an excellent investment, it can be an excellent place
to live, it can be a way of expatriating and diversifying some of your
assets offshore, it can be the beginning of a better way of life.
That is what this article is about in a nutshell. It can be all of

Aboard the Train to Djibouti: Rounding
out the World as it is - Kirk Melcher and Maren Stoltenberg lived
in Germany until about a year ago. They decided to put jobs on hold and
see the world. This article finds them on a train in a very different land.
They write, "This trip is not to find ourselves, or find the secrets of
life. We just have the urge to experience something new and adventurous.
The landscape in Djibouti was mostly barren and uninhabited. Once in a
while, we would see a small village or a shepard with his goats. The houses
were mostly made of piled up stones and thatched roofs like a thousand
years ago. The whole train ride, Kirk did not really sleep, he was nervously
watching the bags, especially where the laptop was. Every time we stopped,
the local kids jumped onto the train. They seemed always interested in
our bags. Maren was able to sleep for short sections of the trip.
Evening, the train got pitch dark."

Going, Going – Ghan ~ Across
Australia By Train ~ Story by Carol L. Bowman Photos by Ernie L. Sowers
- The full moon beamed down on the baked Red Centre clay, emitting a rebounding
glow from the earth. Rounder, fuller than the moon my eyes are accustomed
to viewing, the illusion of a different Southern Hemisphere’ tugged at
my imagination. Just then – a movement outside the window distracted my
attention. A huge, red, short-haired kangaroo hopped alongside the sleek
silver Ghan Train car, his speed enhanced by the coolness of the Great
Victorian Desert night. We were both traversing the vast Australian Outback,
by different locomotion and with different view points, to be sure. Earlier,
only faint outlines of the ‘roos, hiding from the unmerciful sun among
the scrub bushes and scant gum trees, were visible. Jul/05
The

City To Colon ~ by Matthew Atlee - I have been on many great
train journeys – Arica to La Paz , Fort William to Mallaig and Los Angeles
to Salinas – but I had never been on a train in Panama and had not even
thought about taking the train until a friend mentioned we should go. The
train leaves Panama City at 7:00 am and arrives in Colon 54 minutes later.
The return train doesn’t leave Colon until 5:00. The train travels through
a combination of jungle and swamp and looks out over the Canal and Lake
Gatun. When we arrived at the train station we noticed that the other passengers
on the train were a combination of locals and tourists. The locals were
taking the train to work – most worked in the Colon Free Zone as traders.

Afghanistan
before War - You
Khan - Before the coup, before the Russians invaded, before ensuing
tribal conflicts, before the US reprisal against terrorism, Afghanistan
was a country on the "Overland Trail." Many travelers passed though
on their way to India or Europe. It was a country, which had not fully
entered the twentieth century. It may be true, today. Mr. Ginger made his
first trip to Afghanistan in 1976. Since then, he has traveled there on
several occasions, the most recent being this year, before the terrorist
attacks on NYC and Washington. Ginger's experiences in Afghanistan paint
a picture of a people firecly proud of their Asian heritage, and a country
where war is no stranger.

I discovered how kind and compassionate the Turkish people are when we
visited the city of Konya, located in the central Anatolia region. Konya
is a devoutly Muslim city." Over the past year, Leanne and her husband
have been traveling the not so beaten paths of South Asia, Africa, Australia,
and SW Asia. Their travels have shown them a compassionate world
exists where people of all beliefs choose the path of peace.

swimming in the sea and interacting with Australia’s wildlife, I was actually
ready for a city break by the time we arrived in Brisbane. The capital
of Queensland, Brisbane is a delightful city – big enough to have all the
comforts of city living, but small enough not to smother you. Part of Brisbane’s
charm is definitely its multitude of riverside parks. Brisbane River winds

Turtle Hatchlings - Wet,

with special wildlife activity. Some of these seasons, such as the presence
of stingers in the north, are not always welcome. But one of the most interesting
and exceptional seasons takes place from November to March. Fifteen kilometers
northeast of Bundaberg, Queensland at Mon Repos, marine turtles drag themselves
onto the beach to lay their eggs, and starting in January, tiny hatchlings
emerge from the sand. May/05
